BUCKS COUNTY FIRE MARSHAL DEPARTMENT ANNUAL REPORT 2012 Robert Loughery, Chairman Charles H. Martin, Vice-Chairman Diane M. Ellis-Marseglia, LCSW Brian Hessenthaler, COO

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY The Bucks County Fire Marshal Department (BCFMD) renders its expertise to the Bucks County Commissioners, District Attorney s Office, Law Enforcement and Fire Professionals in matters of fire safety, protection and investigation. We provide 24 / 7 On-Call Fire Marshal Investigators rendering assistance to local fire companies, fire marshals, municipal, state and federal law enforcement authorities in the investigation of fires determining their origin and cause for the protection of the public and the prosecution of arson cases. The BCFMD Fire Marshals are all Certified Fire Investigators. In 2012 the Bucks County Fire Investigation Task Force (BCFITF) of which the BCFMD is part of was not deployed for any investigations. The ten person team remains ready to work together toward the development of origin and cause fires when requested. In 2012 the Bucks County Fire Marshal Department completed another year in successfully managing the municipal inspection program, which remains a pilot program. This program is designed to work with municipalities that have no fire marshal to provide fire safety inspections of commercial occupancies making the community safer. We effectively conducted over 317 fire safety inspections in Plumstead Township that served to make the public arena a safe haven for community residents to work, shop and play. The BCFMD continues to maintain highly trained educated professionals specially equipped to accomplish technical fire investigations as well as fire safety and prevention, serving fire and law enforcement agencies, as well as the public. The BCFMD works to implement fire prevention, which is done through two primary mechanisms; our juvenile fire-setter intervention program Fire Professionals Aiding Children (Fire PAC) operated and maintained in an effort to address the problem of juvenile fire-setting in Bucks County. This initiative reduces the threat of fire from our young population. The BCFMD also operates and maintains an inspection program inspecting for all county government owned and leased properties to insure fire safety. Additionally, we inspect provider homes for the Bucks County Area Agency on Aging and Foster Care Homes for Bucks County Children and Youth Social Services Agency. The BCFMD maintains a county owned and operated Central Station, providing protection for numerous County owned and operated facilities. It protects 136 property sites against fire, burglaries / intrusions and panic using various alarm systems. Our department also inspects and maintains well over 1,600 County owned portable fire extinguishers. 2
