Naked Ladies Perennial / Full Sun / 20 inches Description The green strap-shaped leaves of naked lady make a significant clump of foliage in the garden in winter and spring, but then they die down. About six to eight weeks later, the flower stalks start to emerge, growing to about 20 inches tall. Each stalk can have up to 12 flowers in a cluster. Flower color is usually a soft pink, although color variations from white to deep pink occur. The large, rounded brown bulbs produce smaller bulbs over time to form a large clump of plants. Old bulbs can be the size of a grapefruit. The plant is dormant during the summer, both before and after blooming. The leaves grow when winter rains break the dormancy. The best time to work with the plant for division or planting is during its dormant periods. Propagation Fleshy seeds often appear after flowers fade, somewhat resembling pomegranate seeds and colored pink or white. The seeds must be fresh to germinate. Sow them in commercial well-draining potting mix and keep the soil moist. The seeds germinate in as little as two weeks. The seedlings don't bloom until they are three to six years old or older. Divide clumps of bulbs during the summer dormancy, replanting the offsets immediately. The bulbs may not bloom for a year or two after dividing. Cultivation Details of naked lady cultivation vary somewhat depending on the climate. In USDA zones 8 through 10, position the bulb with the neck at the soil surface. In USDA zone 7, protect the bulb by placing it 6 inches deep. For the best flowering, plant naked lady in full sun and remove the dead leaves from the ground each year when they have completely died down. Allowing summer heat to reach the dormant bulbs seems to help regular bloom. In nature, the plant often won't bloom until after a fire has eliminated any shading vegetation. The plant adapts to most soil, as long as it is well-draining. You can also plant it in a pot in a well-draining potting mix with the bulb nose at soil level. Once established, the plant is drought tolerant. When the plant has leaves, water it occasionally during dry spells. Tradescantia grows in almost any kind of soil, from damp to dry, but evenly moist soil is required in the dry areas of the South and West. Plants may look tired by midsummer. If cut back almost to the ground, they will soon produce a fresh crop of foliage and may bloom again in the fall. In the Deep South, plants may go dormant in summer, resuming growth in winter. Strawberry Plants Perennial / Full Sun / 12 inches - To grow in rows, space strawberry plants 18-24 inches apart in rows 3-5 feet apart. Runners will form new plants and eventually form a solid bed. Strawberries may also be planted in containers or pyramid gardens, as an edging for flower and shrub borders or in matted beds and rows. Water frequently until plants are growing vigorously. Apply a light mulch to keep weeds down, conserve moisture and keep fruit clean. Fertilize beds in early summer and again in September with a balanced fertilizer. Do not fertilize if plants are flowering. Note that June-bearing plants produce the second year after planting. Cut all runners off during the first year, leave 2-3 runners the second year. Winter protection for all strawberry varieties is important in most northern areas. Apply a mulch of straw or other loose organic matter 2-3 inches deep over the plants after the ground freezes but before the temperature drops below 20 degrees F. In spring, pull the mulch back into the rows. Strawberry Begonia (Geranium) - Perennial / 2-5 inches / Part Shade Needs well drained soil. Drought and humidity tolerant. Sundrops Perennial / Full Sun / 6-12 inches Needs well-drained soil. Deer resistant. Blooms at night from May to August. Makes a good ground cover. Venus Fly Trap Perennial when protected / 3 4 inches / Sun Flytraps grow best outdoors as a container or potted plant. It makes an excellent addition to any sunny deck or patio. Keep pot in standing water at all times. Never allow the soil to dry out completely. The flytrap requires mineralfree water (rain water or distilled water, which is ~ 90 cents per gallon at the grocery store). Use tap water only if it is less than 50 parts per million in dissolved minerals. Our local water does not meet that requirement. Flytraps require nutrient-free soil that provides good drainage and aeration. Use a mixture of 1 part peat moss and 1 part perlite, making sure that there is no fertilizer added to the peat and perlite. Small bags of Miracle Gro brand often have this added. NEVER use potting soil, compost, or fertilizer. These ingredients will kill the plant. Flytraps require 3-4 months of winter dormancy triggered by cold temperatures (below 50 degrees) and shorter daylight hours. Bring plant to unheated garage or cool room during winter when temperatures drop below 20 degrees, then return to outdoors when temperatures go above 20 degrees again.
