About The Institution of Engineers (India) The Institution of Engineers (India) or IEI is the largest multidisciplinary professional body that encompasses 15 engineering disciplines and gives engineers a global platform from which to share professional interest. IEI has membership strength of more than 0.8 million. Established in 1920, with its headquarters at 8, Gokhale Road, Kolkata-700020, IEI has served the engineering fraternity for over nine decades. In this period of time it has been inextricably linked with the history of modernday engineering. In 1935, IEI was incorporated by Royal Charter and remains the only professional body in India to be accorded this honour. Today, its quest for professional excellence has given it a place of pride in almost every prestigious and relevant organization across the globe. IEI functions among professional engineers, academicians and research workers. It provides a vast array of technical, professional and supporting services to the Government, Industries, Academia and the Engineering fraternity, operating from 121 Centres located across the country. The Institution has established R&D centres at various locations in the country and also provides grant-in-aid to its members to conduct research and development on engineering subjects. IEI conducts Section A & B Examinations in different Engineering disciplines, the successful completion of which is recognized as equivalent to Degree in appropriate field of Engineering of recognized Universities of India by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India. Every year as many as 90,000 candidates appear for these exams. For details, please see : www.ieindia.org. The Institution of Engineers (India) has more than one million members in 15 engineering disciplines in 121 Centre and six Overseas Chapters; it is the world's largest multi-disciplinary engineering professional society in engineering and technology world. IEI was established in 1920 in Madras with Sir Thomas R.J. Ward as the founding president. In 1935, IEI obtained the Royal Charter of Incorporation from King George V 'to promote and advance the science, practice and business of engineering'. Delhi State Centre has a history of nearly 90 years. Located at ITO, it is a landmark in the city of Delhi. It has played a crucial role in uniting various professional societies right from its inception. Delhi State Centre has organized various successful activities which include International and National Conferences, Indian Engineering Congress, All India Seminars, Round Table Conferences and Workshops relating to different strategy of engineering and having crucial impact on society. Preamble Mechanical Engineering, a backbone of an economy, is one of the basic branches of engineering and its fundamental principles are used in the design, development and construction of nearly all of the physical devices and systems, including but not limited to automobiles, machines in all kind of factories, machinery used in building construction, road construction, agriculture etc. Mechanical engineers are also involved with the design, construction and operations of all kinds of machinery. Manufacturing sector encompasses a set of industries to make or produce anything in a factory and therefore, it requires a great deal of specialized knowledge. Mechanical engineers are normally responsible for the design, selection of materials, specifications and the development of production processes and equipment. Due to very broad presence of Mechanical Engineering in Industrial Sector, it has become imperative that current Mechanical Engineering Technology is capable to cope up with the rising challenges. It should be able to assist Industries in having their technical competence. Entry of Global Players have posed challenge for Indian Industries due to which it has become imperative for Mechanical Engineering to keep pace with the global technologies and knowledge is a major challenge for Mechanical Engineers. During the last few decades, lot of innovations and R&D has been taken place in the field of Mechanical Engineering, which is capable of making our industries more cost-efficient, both in terms of Productivity & Quality. However, due to lack of integration in these innovations with actual requirement of Industries and due to drastic changes in Global Economy, Manufacturing sector in India is facing fierce competition from Local & Global Players for survival. Additionally environmental degradation, increasing labour cost and reducing demand are also posing severe hindrances for Industries in their successful operation. Additionally, Society expectations from Mechanical Engineers are very high in regard to Make in India. Make in India is an ambitious initiative launched by government of India to attract manufacturing enterprises from abroad as well as domestic origin to set up manufacturing units in India to enhance the share of manufacturing in our GDP from current 15 percent to 25 percent by 2025. The proposed Convention will focus on these critical Challenges of Mechanical Engineering and will aim at evolving comprehensive action plan to synchronize the latest developments of Mechanical Engineering with actual requirements of Industries in order to assist them in capacity building to handle various threats in a more coercive way.
