Rafael is not your typical 13-year-old boy. First diagnosed at the age of 4 with brain stem cancer, Rafael faced uncountable hospital visits and underwent numerous treatments and tests. He was a strong-willed boy who managed to overcome the illness but in 2010 his family received shocking news; Rafael had papillary thyroid cancer. Rafael has severe restrictive lung disease and is now tracheotomy dependent, which means he is not allowed to play like other kids his age. When The Children s Wish Foundation of Canada asked Rafael about his most heartfelt wish, he chose a games room: a place where I can relax, be normal and have fun with my friends and family he says. Children s Wish and Hunter Douglas engaged designer Lisa Freeman of Lisa Freeman Interiors to change the basement of his home from an unwelcoming space into something vibrant and inviting. Using Rafael s favourite colour, green, she has painted a place where teenage boys can play on gaming machines, watch soccer matches and relax in very cool, custom beanbag chairs. Fay, Rafael s mom, is overjoyed to know that Children s Wish with the help of Hunter Douglas are able to provide this space for her son. Fay says Rafael is most excited about having his friends around and playing in his new games room over March Break. As a single mom she could never have dreamt of providing this for him and is looking forward to it all coming together.
