SUBJECT: HOME SCIENCE Class: 10 Chapter 2:Fabrics for Furnishing Answer the following questions. 1 What is Home Furnishing? Ans Home Furnishing includes systematically providing furniture, curtains and other decorations in a room to enhance the aesthetic appeal of a home. 2 What are the objectives of Home Furnishing? Ans The three objectives of home furnishing are: Beauty: It is the art of adjusting the space and equipment to suit the fundamental and cultural needs of the dwellers for creating a pleasant atmosphere. Expressiveness: It is the quality which differentiates one home from another. It reflects markedly the very personality of the occupants. Some of the ideas expressed in homes are sophistication, coolness, warmth, formality, intimacy etc. Functionalism: The home must provide comfort, service and pleasure, apart from that furniture and furnishing should be related to the function of the item selected. Eg. The furniture must be arranged to meet the needs such as eating, sleeping etc. The material used for the furniture must depend on the usage. 3 What must one keep in mind while planning to buy fabrics for home furnishing? Ans While planning to buy fabrics for furnishing one must consider the following questions: What is the fabric going to be used for? The kind of atmosphere one wants to create. Who will be using the item being made? Which are the colours, textures and designs onw prefers or wants to avoid? Will the item be home laundered or dry cleaned? 4 What are the points to be kept in mind while selecting curtains and draperies to be used in the house? Ans Small rooms can be made to give an effect of being larger if the curtains and draperies blend with the walls. Rooms with low ceilings can be given an appearance of height if diagonal lines are used on the curtains. This is because diagonal lines carry the eye from the ceiling to the floor creating an impression of height. Plain curtains should be used in rooms that have more pattern in them. Plain curtains can also be used in rooms that contain too many pictures and have a lot of pattern in furniture. In order to give an impression of space in a small room, plain curtains can be used with plain walls to give a sense of continuity and spaciousness. While choosing curtains with patterns, the size of the room, general colour of the furnishing and the look expressed by it are the essential points to be considered. Small designs are suitable for small rooms and with light weight furniture. ( 1 )

In a room having too many windows, the pattern on the curtains should be less striking. An easy way is to use a single curtain over a group of windows on the same wall. 5 What are the factors that you will consider while choosing carpets for your home? Ans The following points need to be considered while choosing carpets: Size of the carpet: Carpets are made in strips, squares and broadloom widths. Colour: Colour should be in accordance with the furnishing used. A large room can have a dark-coloured carpet. In a small room, the colour of the carpet should blend with the colour of the wall, thereby showing continuity and wider space. Plain or patterned: Plain carpets go well with patterned upholstery material. Oriental carpets look good in formal rooms. Care needed: One should keep in mind how much care and maintenance do the carpets require while choosing carpets for the home. Stains: Carpets with a shiny surface show sal and crush marks more easily. Dark shades show lint. Therefore, medium shades are more practical. Cost: If the budget is low, felt, jute coir or cotton rugs or even chattais are a good option. Carpets should always be brought from reliable stores or dealers. Impressions: A carpet with a high pile looks good but is crushed more easily than a carpet with a short pile. Durability: The quality of the fibre should be checked. Wool is considered to be the best fibre for carpets as it is durable and colourfast. Cotton rugs are soft and crushable. Jute and hemp are used for making the back of carpets and rugs. But jute decays under moisture. Another important factor in durability is the closeness of the pile. The denser piles are best for traffic lanes. 6 How will you take care of the carpets in your home? Ans New carpets shed fluff for a few weeks. So they should be cleaned lightly in the initial stages of use. After that carpets can be cleaned with a brush. However, brushing should always be done on one side and the pile should be stroked so that the dirt is easily removed. One should not drag heavy pieces of furniture over carpets because doing so could damage the fibres. 7 Name some floor coverings used in the house. Ans Rug: is a single piece of floor covering made with a pattern or border on the fringe. Area rug: is a smaller rug used to emphasise a certain area. In a large room it is used to separate different activities like reading. Eating etc. Wall to wall carpet: is difficult to clean. Since it cannot be shifted frequently, traffic lanes begin to appear gradually. ( 2 )

8 What role does colour play in furnishing? Ans The choice of colour can subdue or highlight the surrounding. If there are flaws, the colour can disguise them. Advancing colours (warm colours) increase the size. Large bulky pieces tend to shrink when covered in dark colours. Receding colours (cool colours) give a sense of space. A colourful accent can draw the eye away from the spot and direct it elsewhere. ******************************************************************* ( 3 )
