Sustainability Update: Understanding LEED Credit by Credit Understanding the details of LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is an educational process. Starting this month and with the upcoming months, we will highlight all of the LEED credits in a detailed credit by credit format in order to clearly outline each credit. LEED v4 and LEED 2009 rate buildings using a point-based system on a 100-point scale. The ratings include: 40 49 points for Certified; 50 59 points for Silver; 60 79 points for Gold; and 80 or more points for Platinum. Points are earned by fulfilling the requirements of optional credits, which are typically worth 1 to 3 points each. Many credits have different options that provide alternative compliance paths or allow partial credit to be earned. Resilient flooring products may be eligible for a number of credits or options under both versions of LEED. These credits will be detailed credit by credit in the upcoming months. EQ Credit 2 Low emitting materials (3 points) This credit is earned if all building materials in seven categories (including flooring) meet VOC emissions standards. For flooring (and several other product categories), the credit states that products must be tested and found in compliance with California Department of Public Health Standard Method v1.1 2010 (CA1350). FloorScore certified products meet this criterion. Additionally, a manufacturer must declare whether the range of total VOCs emitted by the product after 14 days is (1).5 mg/m 3 or less; (2) between 0.5 and 5.0 mg/m 3 ; or (3) 5.0 mg/m 3 or more. The FloorScore certification testing calculates the TVOCs; this information will be available through our Tarkett technical department. All products currently emitting less than 100 micrograms/m 3 will meet the lowest level of emissions, which is.5 mg (500 micrograms/m 3 ). Look for more information regarding LEED credits in the next issue of Foundations.

The International Surface Event 2014 Surfaces 2014 in Las Vegas Tarkett s 4,000 square foot exhibit demonstrated what makes us different in the vast world of floor covering options. Giant purses, indoor clouds what do these items have to do with flooring? They tell the story of The Ultimate Flooring Experience through Tarkett s five supporting Pillars, detailed below. In addition to our exhibit space, we had the opportunity to meet with many distributors who made the trip to the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. A ballroom space was reserved with opportunities to spend time with our Tarkett Product Management Teams and Market Segment Directors to learn of new initiatives and product launches. And, new and exciting website updates were previewed by those in attendance. Tarkett s booth space at Surfaces 2014 Color Fan Deck = Coordination A giant sample set featuring the six color families of iselect for residential on one side and Color Foundations for commercial on the other, with actual Tarkett product for the color swatches. This speaks to how easy it is for users of Tarkett s iselect system to coordinate rooms based on their tastes, and a guarantee to designers that there will always be coordinating neutral color choices available across commercial rubber, vinyl, linoleum and carpet with Color Foundations. Russian Nesting Dolls = Continuity A super-sized set of Russian nesting dolls, which are of similar design in different sizes that fit inside one another. This speaks to getting the preferred design in the construction, performance and warranty level that homeowners and designers end users want. Millwork and Perceptions, Rubber tile in multiple gauges/same color offering two prime examples of design continuity. Coordination Continuity

The International Surface Event 2014 (Continued) Name Tag = Personalization Hanging from the ceiling, an enormous lanyard with a name tag attached profiling Natalie, a busy mom who is shopping for flooring. Her tastes are tied to one of the iselect color families and this speaks to how homeowners can make their rooms their own with residential Design Chat advice. The custom capabilities of commercial Millwork Masquerade are an interior designer s dream when just plain ordinary won t cut it. Personalization Purse = Accessories Possibly the largest designer purse ever, this accessory speaks to accessorizing and how it can put the finishing touch on an outfit or a room. From coordinating transition strips to flowing baseboards and Millwork, these elements finish off the look of a motivating space. Accessories Sustainability Clouds = Sustainability A few white, puffy clouds floated over this area, demonstrating clean air consciousness and water conservation in Tarkett s manufacturing efforts. This speaks to the closedloop sustainability concept that focuses on Good Materials, Resource Stewardship, People-Friendly Spaces and Reuse and Recycle four areas that encompass everything Tarkett does throughout the organization to minimize impact on our environment. These five Pillars are the guiding principles behind every collection, every shape and every size of our products. They are how we help people create the perfect commercial and residential spaces, as well as balance their choices and priorities. Stroke of Midnight Wins 2013 Innovative Use of Materials Award COLOR+COUTURE is an International Interior Design Association (IIDA) event. Models walk the runway wearing fashions made from carpet, tile, wall coverings and more that are created by local architecture and interior design firms! This year an iq Optima entry titled, Stroke of Midnight, was awarded the 2013 Innovative Use of Materials Award by the IIDA Mid America of Kansas City.

Stroke of Midnight Wins 2013 Innovative Use of Materials Award (Continued) The talented and creative design team from Burns & McDonnell that created the award-winning outfit utilized six yards of iq Optima like you've never imagined. Primarily black with Leafy Green accents, the ensemble included eye-catching accessories iq Optima boots and a "beaded" bag that really completed the outfit. Stroke of Midnight, constructed of iq Optima, wins design award. Congratulations to the design team at Burns & McDonnell, which consisted of Rhonda Hukill, Gena Atzenweiler, Barb Haman, Victoria Beaulieu, Renee Laster, Meghan Orscheln and Brad Jamison Colley. The handbag was made to look beaded with small hole punches of iq Optima pieces. These boots made of iq Optima were an eye-catching accessory to the award-winning outfit. New Johnsonite Metallics Color Samples Available Whether your clients are looking to create a sophisticated look for the entire space or want to add an eyecatching accent, the Metallic flooring options from Johnsonite allow them to do so with standard offerings. Our Metallic flooring options offer the luxurious look of metal with the performance of rubber and vinyl, which is yet another dimension of Balanced Choice. Truly unique, Metallurgy rubber tiles and stair treads lead the way with 12 colorways from silvers to coppers and brass to gold that emulate the look of real metals. Featured in the collection are finishes with cool and warm silvers, brass, golds and coppers. What differentiates the Metallurgy line from all other metallic color representations is the definitive likeness to real metal. Colors actually shimmer from the unique blend of a variety of actual metal pigments. Bursts of shiny bits attract the eye to these exceptional metallic renderings.

New Johnsonite Metallics Color Samples Available (Continued) Coordinating finishing borders in the Metallics palette complement Metallurgy s transition to the wall color. Metallics transitions tastefully shift to adjacent flooring choices within the venue or to other spaces. Metallurgy stair treads in the same colorway, with or without striping for the visually impaired, tie in the stairwell accessories. Or clients may choose Metallics stair nosings with other materials on the steps. The Metallurgy rubber tile and treads and the Metallics finishing borders and accessories fall into the Color Foundations neutral categories and can be used along with Johnsonite s entire integrated system of flooring solutions. With Silver, Gold, Brass, Copper and more metallic finishes, clients can feel confident with the available selection. Johnsonite Offers Three New CEUs Johnsonite University will soon be expanding with the addition of three new Continuing Education courses. These new courses will delve deeper into product and segment specific topics, as well as expanding on the already successful Sustainability: An Everyday Practice, Not Just An Idea CEU by discussing new tools for examining the environmental and health impacts of resilient flooring. The new courses will be available for AIA, USGBC and IDCEC credit when they are launched, which should be within the next few weeks. The new topics include: New Sustainable and Aesthetic Options in Finishing Borders (Wall Base): Finishing borders, also referred to as wall base, are the architect s solution for concealing the gap between the wall and the floor in the built environment. This building component provides the finishing touch to a space as well as general protection from the open exposure between the drywall and the floorboards. In the past, designers have chosen the right wall base for a project based on the color, style, material and cost. Now, as the design community and building owners become more invested in the idea of green building and sustainable design, designers want the ability to evaluate wall base solutions on the basis of the products overall sustainability as well. Today, designers can select a wall base that will provide the desired aesthetic, perform as needed, meet budgetary demands and contribute toward the project s sustainability objectives and it can make this contribution throughout the building, wherever the walls meet the floor.

Johnsonite Offers Three New CEUs (Continued) Designing Memory Care Facilities: The design of the built environment can have a real and tangible impact on the people within. Schools can be designed to enhance student performance. Office spaces can be designed to improve employee productivity and satisfaction. Hospitals can be designed to promote healing and minimize medical errors. One of the newest applications where the impact of design is still being realized is in long-term care facilities designed specifically to accommodate people living with Alzheimer s disease and dementia, often called memory care facilities. This article will share some best practices for successfully designing these highly specialized interior spaces, as well as a few items to avoid or carefully consider. More specifically, it will explore how the selection of interior colors, use of lighting, incorporation of daylight, and specification of flooring can help create an environment that promotes calm behavior and comfort and encourages healthy socialization and safe ambulation. The bottom line is, when the objective is to improve the overall quality of life for the millions of residents living with Alzheimer s and dementia, design matters. Transparency in Sustainability: Sustainability is now an industry. From consumer goods to business supplies, building products and design, green and environmentally-friendly features are being touted in an ever-expanding product portfolio. Widespread buyer interest has fueled this meteoric market growth and encouraged product manufacturers to invest in researching and developing products with a sustainable feature set. Sustainability has become such an enticing sales pitch that questions of legitimacy have been raised in some of the claims that products are making about their green performance. In the design and construction industry, certification programs are establishing themselves as the tools to verify the sustainable nature of a product and substantiate the green performance claims made in the promotional materials. As specification audiences become increasingly interested in evaluating products based on their holistic impact on the environment or to the health and wellbeing of building occupants, new formats for disclosure are emerging that reveal the manufacturing processes, environmental impact, product contents and their associated health hazards, improving product transparency and equipping specifiers to make more informed product selections. The Importance of Acclimation Prior to Installation As you know, acclimation is a critical necessity to achieve a proper installation as materials often experience drastic changes in temperature and humidity during transportation and again during temporary staging in the Distributor and Contractor warehouses prior to arriving on the job site.

The Importance of Acclimation Prior to Installation (Continued) Given the severity of the recent cold weather and the drastic decline in temperature, it is important to maintain the jobsite temperature within the recommended range of 65 F to 85 F, and acclimate all flooring materials, adhesives and accessories prior to installation. The acclimation period might take longer than normal due to the extremely cold weather; however an extra day or two of acclimation could avoid significant delays if problems arise during the installation process because the materials are too cold to be properly installed. A word of caution regarding adhesives in cold weather: While many of our adhesives are freeze-thaw stable to 20 F, it is a good practice to protect ALL adhesives from freezing. Any adhesive that is not protected from these extremely cold temperatures will be unusable as the freeze-thaw stability of the adhesive will be compromised by these extreme weather conditions. Please be advised that any adhesive which becomes frozen at these colder temperatures will not recover or be suitable for installation and will not qualify for return to Tarkett for credit or replacement. We suggest that you remind your customers of cold weather precautions regarding material acclimation and adhesive protection to help avoid costly delays and potential installation failures. We hope this information is helpful as you work with your customers to provide successful, quality flooring projects. Please contact Technical Services at 1.800.899.8916, extension 9297, if you have any questions regarding proper acclimation or installation of our flooring solutions. Case Study: The Goddard School in Carlsbad, California Situated in the Calavera Hills Community of Carlsbad, California is the brand new Goddard School Early Childhood Learning Center. This new 8,570 square foot one-story building is used for a pre-school based on The Goddard School s National Standards, serving children from six weeks to five-years-old.

Case Study: The Goddard School in Carlsbad, California (Continued) The design team at Smith Consulting Architects was tasked with finding a sustainable, durable and low, easy maintenance flooring product as well as looking to create a fun and safe environment for early childhood development, which is why Smith Consulting Architects chose the Johnsonite iq Optima Homogeneous Sheet and Tile products in the new Goddard School in Carlsbad, California. The Johnsonite iq Optima product line is an easy to maintain flooring option for a busy school environment. The products are no wax, no finish for life and are easy to clean with a neutral ph cleaner. The vibrant colors in the Johnsonite iq Optima product line helped enable the design team at Smith Consulting Architects to create the fun environment they envisioned. We chose iq Optima because it is easy-to-clean, doesn t require any waxing and can reduce water, detergent and energy costs, said Katie Hale, Interior Designer at Smith Consulting Architects. And we know it will be able to withstand the harsh treatment little kids are bound to give it. Smith Consulting Architects commitment to sustainability on this project was also seen in other design highlights, including the incorporation of no or low VOC paints, the suspended ceiling tile qualified as High Recycled Content (HRC) and the woods in the cabinet construction do not off-gas. The landscaping was designed for low water use and the site drainage met LEED standard for water quality. The windows in all the classrooms are operable, allowing fresh air indoors and less energy to run the air conditioning as well, Hale said. The team was inspired by bright and playful colors that would appeal to children. Since the school provides teaching and care for infants and older kids we wanted to create different color palettes to serve as a sort of way finding, said Hale. We chose brighter, more vibrant colors for the 3-5 year classrooms, and more subtle pastels for the 0-36 month classrooms. This design intent was then enhanced by the addition of murals jungle theme for the older kids and ocean theme for the younger kids. Brighter, more vibrant colors were used in the 3 to 5 year classrooms.

Case Study: The Goddard School in Carlsbad, California (Continued) The Johnsonite iq Optima product line offers very vibrant colors that are difficult to find in other resilient products, especially VCT, Hale said. The durability and low, easy maintenance were two of the driving factors that really attracted us to iq Optima in the first place. As of early 2013, Tarkett signed contracts with three of the largest Healthcare group purchasing organizations (GPOs): Premier Inc., MedAssets and HealthTrust. A GPO is an entity created to leverage the research and purchasing power of a group of businesses to obtain access, discounts and enhanced services from vendors based on the collective buying power and leveraged interests of the GPO members. We have established pricing for each of the three group purchasing organizations. There is no need for SPAs for these GPO orders. Our pricing structure is based on the distributor s current pricing. It is important that all Healthcare orders are double-checked on our combined GPO roster database to ensure they are being reported and recorded as a GPO sale. For more information or questions on our GPO program, please contact Healthcare Segment Specialist, Nicole Sweet, or Director Healthcare Development, Cyndie Hubbell.
