www.isaoc.org Standards and Practices ISA Standards: Practical Solutions ISA members are developing standards in areas as diverse as ensuring the safety of electrical equipment used in hazardous locations to cost-savings for interfaces between industrial process control computers and subsystems. More than 4,000 individuals on over 140 committees, subcommittees, working groups and task forces are involved in ISA standards actvities. For specific information about how standards are developed that save money and saves lives, how to propose a new standard, or how your company can use standards to help your business expand, please visit www.isa.org/ standards. Key features, advantages and benefits of standards Realize a direct return on investment by lowering installation and startup costs, reducing need to maintain large inventories, enabling interchangeability of components, improving design with less custom effort and increasing safety. The use of standards in industry improves communication, provides practical application of expert knowledge and represents years of experience and avoids necessity of starting each project from ground up. Standards help you achieve operational excellence by improving performance, lowering maintenance costs, reducing downtime, enhancing operability and saving money. With recent technological and design advances this no longer needs to be the case. This program will take a typical grass roots project with 12,500 I/O and examine various ways to dramatically reduce the cost of field installations through optimized hardware selection, reduced engineering, design and construction. Professional Advancement 62nd ISA Int l Instrumentation Symposium to be held May 24-26 in Dayton Ohio The Symposium will include paper presentations, courses, and workshops relating to the new and innovative instrumentation techniques, solutions, and applications. Three ISA divisions are sponsoring the event: Aerospace Industries, Test Measurement, and Process Measurement and Control. The deadline for submitting the abstracts is 1/15/16. For more details on the procedure, guideline, and a list of sample topics, please visit www.isa.org/iis2016cfp. Join a technical committee; keep up to date Joining an ISA committee is a great way of keeping yourself up-to-date with the latest ISA standards changes. Choose from a list of committees relating to your industries. There are two types of membership status for each ISA committee: voting members and information members. Voting members are responsible for attending meetings, communicating with the chairpersons, and commenting on draft standards. Information members receive committee mailings and may submit draft comments, but they do not vote. To join and to see a list of available committees, visit https://www.isa.org/forms/ join-a-standards-committee. For example, I m currently enrolled as an Information Member on Control Valves Testing, Valve actuators, and Valve sizing. As a result, I receive updates on potential changes and on new standards relating to this industry prior to the official release. Just last month, I learned of at least three drafts standards in development in the valve industries including ISA-96.02.01, Guidelines for the Specification of Electric Valve Actuators, ISA-75.08.05, and ISA-75.08.08, both relating to face to face dimensions of valves. As a reminder, current members can view most ISA standards, Recommended Practice, and Technical Reports free at https:// www.isa.org/standards-and-publications/isastandards/member-access-to-standards/ after you login. Due to copyright restrictions, this benefit is for individual member use only. For more information, please conatct Eddie Chau at (949) 835-8052 or eddie.chau@imi-critical.com. Message from the DVP Happy Holidays! I hope you have the opportunity to share some good meals and quality time with family and friends this holiday season. In Southern California the shorter daylight time, the crisp cold nights, the smell of wood burning in fireplaces, and the immediate need to wear pants and shoes instead of shorts and sandals while doing yard work on a Saturday morning make it clear that we are in Autumn, soon to be in Winter, and soon we will be starting a new year. Over the last four years I have had the privilege and honor of serving ISA as District 11 Vice President-elect, and later as District 11 Vice President. My term as District Vice president ends this year. Starting January 1, 2016 Jeff Blue current District 11 Vice President- Elect will be starting his two year term as District 11 VP. Jeff Blue brings with him a passion for ISA and its vision, 40 years experience in the automation industry holding various roles; he is currently Engineering Manager at Southern Las Vegas Water Authority, has been a member of ISA for 25 years and is an ISA Certified Automation Professional. It has been a pleasure getting to know and work with Jeff over the years. I am confident that Jeff Blue will be a great DVP, and if you know him I am sure you do too. Almost 2 years ago during Peggy Coons term as society President, a new initiative was started to rethink the strategic goals of ISA, and make investments to support the new strategic goals. A specialist assisted the leaders attending the meetings at the FLM, and SLM in forming the new strategic goals. One of the first questions that was asked at the initial meeting was something to the extent of: Who is Automation?, If you are reading this you have probably formed your own thoughts in your mind. Engineers, Technicians, Sales Rep Companies, Research George Platt Scholarship Application Postmark Deadline February 13, 2016 and Development, Manufacturers, Students,. as you can see the list is endless. Automation is everywhere. The process of coming up with the strategic goals was enlightening, you have Automation professionals in different capacities, from different parts of the world, different experience levels, and in that room everyone is united as volunteers in ISA currently coming together to create the strategic goals for the society. I encourage you to checkout ISA s new website layout and read about the 5 strategic goals www.isa.org. Below is ISA s Vision and the 5 Strategic goals: Content, Data, Coolest Delivery, Cyber Security, and Advocacy. There is still work to be done, however overall ISA is making progress in implementing the strategic goals so that they bring optimum value to its members and the automation industry. I want to thank all of the volunteers in district 11 for working with Jeff Blue and I over the last couple years in making district 11 meet requirements for maintaining active sections, encouraging and attending leader meetings, bringing value to its members, and all that while having fun. All of the trade shows, golf tournaments, technical presentations, educational seminars, holiday dinners, etc. bring the network of automation professionals together allowing us to share ideas, and get to know each other. Although my term as DVP is ending I will still be around ISA.
