Doug s book Bringing Nature Home (winner of the Garden Writers Association Silver Award) is the premier event of the year and has been the inspiration for all of the Year of the Butterfly Garden events. In his talk Doug explains the importance of slowing the decline in insect and other wildlife habitat by our own actions in our own backyards. Denny, one of the authors of the Discovering Marblehead book, is currently coauthoring a book on monarch butterflies with Chip Taylor of Monarch Watch and for the past 5 years has been photographing butterfly, moth and insect visitors to his butterfly garden. This colorful menagerie is one of the most interesting animal populations anywhere. Erika Sonder (www.portableherbarium.com) is a field biologist, naturalist and nature artist. She gives workshops demonstrating the techniques of specimen collection, plant pressing and mounting used for the preparation of scientific herbarium specimens. She was formerly Assistant Curator of Vascular Plants for the New England Botanical Club herbarium at Harvard University. The initiation of her Portable Herbarium business has been the ideal marriage of art and science. In addition to their value as objects of beauty her prints of herbarium specimens are used as tools in education, displays in nature centers and in museums to introduce the biodiversity of New England flora to the general public. Among her goals are the preservation of open space and the promotion of interest in nature. Opening, Tuesday, October 4, 2011, wine and cheese reception, 5:30 7PM. Abbot Public Library 2
