International Security Training, LLC All Rights Reserved Physical Security Specialist Page 2 of 5 This course is assembled in a manner that presents the topic in phases. As you move on, the phases will overlap and repeat topics just in more depth each time. The authors of this material are many. From the USA, UK, Germany & Australia. We hope you ll use this a not only a study manual for this course but as a resource for the future. Security Fundamentals & Concepts It can be very easy for those of us working in standard detail assignments to slow our learning curve and just focus on our day in & day out responsibilities. But this is not for you! You want to be the type of professional that can articulate the concepts outlined below... on the spur of a moment. That spur of a moment may often be during a conversation with a potential employer when applying for a job. I mean no disrespect, but a lot of the people I've worked with base their whole "Reason To Hire Me" on their distant past. Our past is very important and all of us bring a unique 'life-history' to this profession. However, in order to stay at in the top 10% of security professionals out there, we must combine our previous life-history with our current knowledge (and ability to articulate that...) along with impeccable customer service & a pleasant (not gung-ho) demeanor. Remember, when tooting your own horn... be able to tell the potential employer, "This is what I did years ago & this is what I'm doing today!" Inner Ring; Special Controlled Areas / Items 2. Middle Ring; Access To Facility; From Doors, Gates, Windows, to the property line fence or wall. 3. Outer Ring: From the Property line [Fences, Walls, (CPTED)] to One Mile Radius Around Your Property. Intro - Physical security In physical security, the term access control refers to the practice of restricting entrance to a property, a building, or a room to authorized persons. Physical access control can be achieved by a human (a guard, bouncer, or receptionist), through mechanical means such as locks and keys, or through technological means such as access control systems like the mantrap. Within these environments, physical key management may also be employed as a means of further managing and monitoring access to mechanically keyed areas or access to certain small assets. Physical access control is a matter of who, where, and when. An access control system determines who is allowed to enter or exit, where they are allowed to exit or enter, and when they are allowed to enter or exit. Historically this was partially accomplished through keys and locks. When a door is locked only someone with a key can enter through the door depending on how the lock is configured. Mechanical locks and keys do not International Security Training, LLC All Rights Reserved Physical Security Specialist Page 3 of 5

International Security Training, LLC All Rights Reserved Physical Security Specialist Page 4 of 5 allow restriction of the key holder to specific times or dates. Mechanical locks and keys do not provide records of the key used on any specific door and the keys can be easily copied or transferred to an unauthorized person. When a mechanical key is lost or the key holder is no longer authorized to use the protected area, the locks must be re-keyed. Electronic access control uses computers to solve the limitations of mechanical locks and keys. A wide range of credentials can be used to replace mechanical keys. The electronic access control system grants access based on the credential presented. When access is granted, the door is unlocked for a predetermined time and the transaction is recorded. When access is refused, the door remains locked and the attempted access is recorded. The system will also monitor the door and alarm if the door is forced open or held open too long after being unlocked. The need-to-know principle! The need to know principle can be enforced with user access controls and authorization procedures and its objective is to ensure that only authorized individuals gain access to information or systems necessary to undertake their duties. International Security Training, LLC All Rights Reserved Physical Security Specialist Page 5 of 5 Physical security systems for protected facilities are generally intended to: 1. Deter potential intruders (e.g. warning signs and perimeter markings) 2. Detect intrusions and monitor/record intruders (e.g. intruder alarms and CCTV systems); and 3. Trigger appropriate incident responses (e.g. by security guards and police). That s all for now!
