Outcomes Upon completion of the subject, students will be able to: a) identify relevant engineering theories and principles and to apply them in hands-on training exercises to determine building services system feasibility; b) compare and contrast conceptual design, develop actual work sequences and methods for various electrical and mechanical installations; c) undertake the design, construction, testing and commissioning of building services systems in buildings on the basis of recognize the engineering standards, regulations and practices; d) apply intelligent building control technology effectively on various building services systems. (TM1238) Builders Practices Appreciation Appreciation of good practices of common builders practices which are closely related to building services design, installation and maintenance: Brickwork : Brickwork and block work; jointing and bonding; application of fire stop sealants on wall joints and associated preparation work on masonry walls for building services installation. Reinforced Concrete: Concrete types and production process; reinforcement types and fixing; concrete cover and size of steel bars detection; and associated preparation work for building services installation. Steelwork and Fastening: Common structural steel sections used in construction industry; cutting and drilling of steelwork members; bolt and nuts and welding connections; and corrosion protection. Different types of fastening systems used in building services installation e.g. anchor bolts and screw fastening; commonly used tools and equipment in fastening systems. Scaffolding: Common types of metal scaffolding including mobile working platform used for building services work; tools and equipment; scaffolding safety; and simple erection of a light-weight metal scaffolding work platform. (TM0376) Low-voltage Switchboard and Power Monitoring 1. Understand the specifications, schematic diagram, standards and requirements of LV switchboard. 2. LV switchboard construction and operation; installation practice of measuring and protection elements. 3. Setting of IDMTL and electronic protection relays; carry out primary and secondary injection test; system commissioning and maintenance. 4. Power monitoring and analysis, noise and harmonics; active filters and real-time capacitor bank. (TM0383) Integrated Building Systems 1. Use a motion sensor with enable/ disable switch. 2. Design a basic lighting control. 3. Design a lighting system with dimming function (relative dimming and brightness control). 4. Design a fault monitoring and reporting panel. 5. Design a blind / shutter control system. 6. Design a light-scene control with infrared remote control and display operation. 7. Plan and design mini-projects for realistic work applications. 8. (TM3028) Automation and Underground Utilities Detection 1. Requirements and necessity of underground utility detection. 2. Theories of underground detection and equipment use including induction and CCTV systems. 3. Detection practices in training fields. 4. (TM0366) Electrical Installation Practice 1. Electrical workshop safety for the use of PPE, portable equipment; ladder, platform and power tools. 2. Understand the Cope of Practice of Electrical Wiring Regulation; select and correct use of components; conduit, trunking and cable installation practice; flexible steel conduit & PVC conduit installation. 3. Understand circuit category and segregation; distinguish of extra low voltage, low voltage and high voltage; cable selection and sizing; equipotential bonding; circuit protective conductor; two way lighting control circuit installation; fluorescent lamp operation and installation; ring final circuit installation and arrangement. 4. Control function terminology; control component application; control schematic drawing and wiring practice; single-phase AC motor installation and control; new cable color code implementation. 5. Commissioning and test for final circuits and sub-distribution circuits; procedures for inspection; testing and certification; use of measuring equipment. (TM0374) Air Conditioning System and AC Control 1. Identification, selection and application of basic air conditioning system components. 2. Plumbing materials in building services engineering, tools and pipe types; cutting, bending, threading, jointing, fixing of steel, PVC, copper and UPVC lined steel pipes; valves, fittings and traps. 3. Derive equipment schedules and installation plan. 4. Practice on installation of simple sanitary and water systems; defects, tests, maintenance of water systems. 5. Site inspection technique for plumbing and drainage. Learning Methodology The teaching and learning methods include lectures, workshop tutorials, and practical works to convey general principles, techniques and related technologies to students.
