5 Device overview Purpose The JOKE ultrasonic cleaners with frequency switching are exclusively intended for cleaning of workpieces with the cleaning liquids recommended by the manufacturer. The device is particularly suitable for lapped/polished workpieces or objects (devices in the medical, dental, laboratory and optical field, clocks and jewellery), in which the smallest cavities or undercuts exist and mechanical cleaning is not successful. If all the instructions for handling are complied with, ultrasonic cleaning represents an extremely gentle and thorough form of cleaning. 1 2 3 4 5 6 Fig. 5.1 View of controls 1 Timer for ultrasound operation. 5 Device overview Cleaning principle Ultrasonic transmitters are arranged under the base of the vibration trough, which convert electrical energy into mechanical vibrations. The cleaning liquid in the trough is excited with 35 KHz and caused to vibrate. At the same time, tiny vacuum bubbles are formed which implode (cavitation) resulting in pore-deep cleaning of the parts arranged in the cleaning liquid. Select the desired output setting according to the cleaning intensity required: Soft Gentle cleaning to remove light soiling and for sensitive surfaces. Power Intensive cleaning for stubborn soiling, in addition to rapid cleaning for robust surfaces. Sweep The working frequency is continuously modified within a defined range. As a result, the minima and maxima of the sound field is spatially displaced in the trough. A more even load on the ultrasonic transmitter is also achieved. The cleaning effect is more uniform than in normal operation. 9

7 Operation Operation for the first time Before operation for the first time after removing the packaging, check the housing, controls/mains connection cable and the ultrasonic trough for any damage. If damage is observed, the device must not be operated. In this case, inform JOKE customer service. 1. Place the device on a firm, dry base. IMPORTANT! It is essential to prevent penetration of moisture on the underside of the device. Permitted ambient temperature: +5 - +40 C. Permitted relative humidity up to 30 C: 80 % Permitted relative humidity up to 40 C: 50 % Misting is not permitted! IMPORTANT! 2. Screw/install the elbow and the drainage hose on to the shut-off cock on the side of the device. 3. Fill the vibration trough with cleaning liquid. Only use cleaning liquid authorised by the manufacturer (JOKE - Clean). WARNING! Never fill the device with inflammable liquids or volatile solvents. This results in a risk of fire and explosion. 13

7 Operation wrong right Bild 7.2 IMPORTANT! Fill the vibration trough up to the mark with liquid, but at least to 2/3 however. An excessively low filling level will result in damage to the device. INFORMATION! 4. Connect the device to the power source with the mains cable. The rotary switch for temperature adjustment (7.1/5) must be set to 0 and the switch for the heating must be set to OFF. IMPORTANT! Take care to ensure proper earthing of the socket. 5. Arrange the workpieces in the basket insert or in the vibration trough During each cleaning operation, ensure that the workpiece is completely covered with cleaning liquid. Cleaning is normally performed directly in the vibration trough. Indirect cleaning in inserts or a suspension trough is to be performed when: Using chemically corrosive cleaning liquids (e.g. acids, etc.) Removing chemically corrosive soiling (e.g. cleaning of racks from continuous processors) Removing abrasive soiling (e.g. polishing compound, resin and sand). Cleaning directly in the vibration trough Cleaning only with a basket insert or device container. The object to be cleaned must not stand on the floor of the trough. 14

7 Operation Fig. 7.3 Indirect cleaning in inserts or in an unperforated suspension trough Fill the inserts or suspension trough with cleaning liquid (e.g. water + JOKE Clean 225 dispensed). IMPORTANT! Suspend the inserts in the perforated lid. Do not stand them on the floor of the trough. Inserts or the suspension trough must be immersed at least 2 cm deep in the cleaning liquid. In doing so, take care to fill the vibration trough 2/3 full. INFORMATION! Several inserts with different cleaning liquids can be ultrasonicated simultaneously. Bild 7.4 Kontaktflüssigkeit = Contact liquid 15

7 Operation Further instructions for the insertion of the goods to be cleaned Place the more heavily soiled side facing downwards. Do not stack parts on top of each other, ultrasound will be absorbed. Sensitive parts must not touch each other. Damage is avoided by using the plastic inserts, the plastic insert basket or the silicon nubbed mat in suspension troughs. Temperature control for heat-sensitive parts. No air bubbles must be present in cavities (e.g. blind holes). Switching the ultrasonic cleaner on and off The device is switched on and off by adjusting the timer. Timer operation 1. Turn the rotary knob (fig. 7.1/1) clockwise to the desired cleaning time (max. 15 minutes). 2. The timer switches off automatically once the preset time is over. 3. The cleaning time can be shortened or the device switched off by turning in the opposite direction. Constant operation 1. Turn the rotary knob (fig. 7.1/1) to the position. 2. The device does not switch off automatically; therefore turn the rotary knob back to OFF in order to switch off. INFORMATION! In the switched off state, the device may remain connected to the mains. Disconnection from the mains is performed by pulling out the mains plug. 16

7 Operation Output adjustment The ultrasonic output can be set to soft or power at the rocker switch (fig. 7.1/2). The preselected setting is constantly maintained. Adjustment of the heating 1. Set the rotary selector knob to the desired temperature. 2. Rocker switch in the ON position The white control lamp goes out once the desired temperature is reached. INFORMATION! IMPORTANT! INFORMATION! IMPORTANT! INFORMATION! INFORMATION! The heating functions independently from the ultrasound. Do not switch on the heating without cleaning liquid. There is a risk of burning out. Warmed cleaning liquid intensifies the cleaning. Do not heat disinfection liquids. Ultarsonic energy also warms the cleaning liquid; consequently, simultaneous ultrasonication reduces the heating time. By constant ultrasonication and covering the vibration trough, the liquid temperature may increase to above the preset value. 17

7 Operation Heating the cleaning liquid Depending on the soiling, in addition to the assistance of the suitable cleaning medium, it is recommended to heat the cleaning liquid. heating switch in the on position Switch the heating switch on. The yellow control light heating illuminates. Temp. adjustment at the control thermostat Set the desired cleaning temperature. The trough must be at least half full. The optimum filling level is up to the trough mark. In order to achieve uniform heating of the cleaning liquid, it is necessary to occasionally switch the ultrasound on or manually stir the liquid. INFORMATION! Without circulation of the liquid, the heat generated rises to the surface by the influence of physics. A steep temperature gradient results in the cleaning bath (the temperature differences between the surface of the liquid and the floor of the trough may be up to 40 C). Furthermore, increased calcareous deposits form in the heating area, since the resulting high temperature is not optimally dissipated into the liquid. 18

7 Operation Duration of cleaning In principle, the shortest possible duration of cleaning is to be set. Depending on the soiling and the cleaning liquid used (comply with the instructions on the respective labels of the cleaning liquids), the duration of cleaning amounts to approx. 1 to 15 minutes. INFORMATION! Degassing the cleaning liquid increases the cleaning effect. Cleaning and contact liquids contain dissolved gases (e.g. oxygen). Ultrasonicate cleaning or contact liquids that have been freshly filled or have remained in the vibration trough for a long period for approx. 5 to 15 minutes before use. Degass vibration troughs of more than 10 l volume for approx. 30 min. During the degassing, the cavitation noise changes, loud degassing noises cease at the end of the degassing process and the device works noticeably more quietly. A lower noise level does not mean any decline in the ultrasonic output, but only the end of the degassing process. Draining the vibration trough Do not place the device in the sink! Devices with a drainage hose The trough is drained by opening the shut-off cock on the side. Before operating the device for the first time, install the elbow supplied and the drainage hose on the shut-off cock. IMPORTANT! After draining the trough, it must be ensured by rinsing several times that there are no particles (> 300 µm) in the drain outlet. 19

7 Operation General guidelines for the use of cleaning products The maximum cleaning effect is achieved with media specially suited to ultrasonic use, e.g. JOKE -Clean. Renew used cleaning and disinfection liquids; do not refresh by subsequently adding more. Layers of dirt on the base of the trough or inserts (e.g. grinding and polishing media and other deposits) impair performance; consequently, drain the vibration trough and clean the latter and renew cleaning liquid. Cleaning and contact liquid in the ultrasonic vibration bath must not exceed a maximum operating temperature of 100 C. Distilled or deionised water is unsuitable for ultrasonic cleaning directly in the vibration bath (in insert and suspension troughs, distilled or deionised water is usable both as a cleaning liquid and starting bath for other cleaning products). Only use cleaning preparations tested and developed for ultrasonic cleaning, e.g. JOKE -Clean. CAUTION! During work with corrosive cleaning products in inserts or a suspension trough, avoid projections in the contact liquid or on the stainless steel surfaces; if necessary, immediately renew the contact liquid, clean surfaces and rub dry. No warranty is accepted for damage to the device and instruments caused by use of unsuitable cleaning or disinfection chemicals. 20

8 Care and maintenance JOKE ultrasonic cleaning devices are maintenance-free. In order to prolong the service life of the vibration trough and always achieve perfect cleaning results, regular cleaning and care of the device is necessary. Observe the following points for cleaning: INFORMATION! Pull out the mains plug before any cleaning of the device. Do not spray down the devices or immerse the latter in water, but wet wipe the interior and exterior. Thoroughly rinse out and rub dry the stainless steel trough more frequently. Do not use any steel wool and avoid using scrapers. If after more prolonged use, tide-marks remain on the stainless steel surface of the vibration trough, these should be removed with a common commercially available stainless steel care product without any scouring additives. Remains of metal parts on the stainless steel surface in addition to rust particles from the water supply system may penetrate the passive protective surface of the stainless steel, activate the stainless steel and cause it to begin to rust. This foreign rust causes crevice corrosion on the stainless steel. Consequently, remove any metal parts remaining behind, such as screws and metal filings, etc. and remove small rust marks immediately using a soft cloth and common commercially available stainless steel care products. Note on repair All the functions of every device are extensively checked before delivery. If malfunctions occur after prolonged operation, JOKE Service should be contacted. 22

10 Cleaning products Cleaning products In the choice of the right cleaning product, it is essential to pay attention to suitability for ultrasonic troughs, since otherwise damage to the vibration trough may occur. Inflammable products are generally not allowed (refer to warnings). The products must not contain any halogenide ions or table salt, since these result in tension cracks in the trough. Acids, such as hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid or nitric acid will very rapidly destroy the device. Particularly in the case of acid cleaners (e.g. for derusting or removing mineral contamination such as calcareous deposits) only specially formulated cleaners should be used. We offer a comprehensive range of cleaning preparations, which guarantee a long service life for the device. Refer to our current JOKE catalogue in this connection (page 399). If products from other manufacturers are used, please observe the instructions included, specifically concerning use in ultrasonic baths. 23
