WEST SUSSEX DESIGN AND SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS 2011 www.westsussex.gov.uk WS839 9.11

WEST SUSSEX DESIGN AND SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS 2011 Introduction Since 1978, West Sussex County Council has run an Award Scheme, which promotes and celebrates the construction and restoration of buildings, structures and open spaces throughout the County. The Award Scheme aims to reflect the increasing need for construction to be sustainable, both in terms of materials and energy use. Applications were made under the following categories. 1. The New Building Award: an award for new buildings which best exhibit the principles of good design. 2. The Sustainable Building Award: an award for buildings incorporating the principles of sustainable construction and which are designed to minimize their impact on the environment for the life of the building. 3. The Restoration Award: an award for the best conversion or restoration of an existing structure(s) which gives a new life to the building or structure. 4. The Public Realm Award: an award for the best landscaping (hard or soft) around an individual building or group of buildings, a public open space, new public art, or an example of quality street scene design and layout. Entries were judged by Michael Rowan of WSCC, Chris Lamb of Kent ure Centre, and Leeza Aldis-Hobbs of AMdesign s.

Winner in Category 1: The New Building Award Langley Green Children s Centre Crawley Langley Green Children s Centre combines together a new community centre, children s centre and general administration facilities for Langley Green Primary School. Within the Centre the various uses have been distributed between two zones; the community zone and the administration zone, separated by a large open reception area. Externally the building is formed by an elegant pre-cast concrete frame punctuated by a new community hall. The cladding consists of panels of varying colour tones inspired by the colours of Langley Green Primary School. All materials selected have been chosen for their excellent environmental properties, low embodied energy and durable nature with the vast majority achieving A+ ratings within the green guide. A community building that clearly provides flexible, multi-user spaces, cleverly housed in a well designed, modern exterior. An extremely well designed bold addition to an existing neighborhood that contains valuable new facilities for the community. This is a modern design that creates a real sense of place. West Sussex County Council Re-Format

Award in Category 2: The Sustainable Building Award Lodsworth Larder Lodsworth The shop is a roundwood timber framed cruck building constructed from sweet chestnut from woodland within the parish of Lodsworth. The woodland, now under careful management, is an area of about four acres of mixed derelict coppice, last cut over fifty years ago. The ridge pole and wall plates are larch(from an adjacent plantation) and slow growing ash has been used for the wind braces. Twelve oak trees were felled to increase light levels in the coppice, and were then milled, kiln dried and tongue and grooved at the local timber merchants, W L West & Sons in Selham, for the shop floor and under floor beams. Cedar shingles made from timber sourced from the nearby cowdray estate have been made locally for the roof. The shop has been insulated using sheep s wool, and finished with oak waney edge boarding and breathable lime plaster. The roof has a 3KW display of photovoltaic panels and low energy lighting. The shop also utilises a low water usage policy and has installed a unique waste water collection system. A brilliant example of community architecture expertly crafted and locally sourced. A gem in an already outstanding village and sure to be an exemplar of a new breed of community based initiatives. Martin Lester Valerie Hinde

Commendation in Category 2: The Sustainable Building Award The Greenpower Centre Fontwell Fordingbridge have recently created the new headquarters for The Greenpower Education Trust. The centre was designed as an inspiring learning environment for participants and industry professionals as well as acting as an innovative test bed for low emission technologies. The Greenpower centre has been designed to be intrinsically sustainable, with an emphasis on preserving the natural environment both locally and globally. The project uses passive design principles, sustainable materials and realistic low carbon technologies, carefully formulated by the team from Fordingbridge, Passivent and Emission-Zero. The building successfully demonstrates current sustainable technologies, whilst creating an inspiring learning environment. A new showcase for 21st century technology and practice. Fordingbridge Plc Fordingbridge Plc

Award in Category 3: The Restoration Award Worth Abbey Church Worth Francis Pollen s inspirational building (constructed between 1965 and 1975) was in need of renovation, and Heatherwick Studio s design restores the church interior, enhancing the effect with new furniture. The main feature of the renovation is the new furniture, which replaces loose chairs with fixed seating. The design of the pews reflects the geometry of the Abbey Church. The pews are constructed from layers of American Black Walnut with an Ash interlayer, and this material creates a large scale east-west grain, which runs throughout the seats in reference to the square walls. Complementing the timber furniture is a new ambo on the sanctuary and water stoups at the entrances to the Abbey Church. Both have been crafted in Portland stone to reflect the design of the altar and baptismal font. Fronting the balcony, a new walnut fascia improves acoustics and unifies the appearance of the church. The balcony floor has been reconstructed, and is now robust and quiet to walk on. The new lighting scheme adds feature lighting to the ceiling, and emergency lights for improved safety, with easy switching of settings for different occasions. A beautifully detailed and crafted restoration of a stunning interior space. Thoughtful design and superb execution make for a wonderful restoration, proving that in the right hands contemporary architecture can be used to create an exceptional place for prayer and contemplation. Worth Abbey Heatherwick Studio

Commendation in Category 3: The Restoration Award The Dome Bognor Regis The Dome building was built in 1792 and is a grade I listed building. Due to the listed status of the Dome, minimum works were undertaken to the two primary façades other than some repairs to building fabric. The proposals concentrated on new works on the interior which was last refurbished in the 1970s. The interior design proposals are designed to encourage local business to The Dome and raise its public profile, designed to be flexible to accommodate a variety of functions at various times, whilst conveying a unique atmosphere and character with a quality timeless identity that compliments the architecture. Through the design and selection of interior finishes there was the opportunity to create several internal environments with their own character, whilst at the same time having a common design thread that unifies the buildings. Thoughtful and well executed restoration providing modern, flexible interiors. A number of well considered changes and additions to a Listed building. University of Chichester BDP

Commendation in Category 3: The Restoration Award Pickwell Barn Ansty Pickwell is a modern family home, which appears modest and unobtrusive on approach. The client bought a derelict, roofless stone barn in 2008 with the intention of building a home for her and her two children. The design developed around a private southwest-facing courtyard, which would allow as much light into the once dark interior spaces. The stone walls were to be retained and underpinned where necessary. An internal stretch of stone wall, next to the bedrooms faces west, behind large areas of glazing, acting as thermal mass on sunny days. All spaces flow into each other giving a great feeling of space and connection to the outdoors whilst hidden from view from the adjoining road. An extensive barn conversion creating a elegant modern home. A bold transformation of a derelict barn resulting in a superb contemporary home. Ms Rebecca Frost Annabel Brown
