11/6/15 Resource Effeciency

11/6/15 Eco-Cities An eco-city is a city built off the principles of living within the means of the environment. The ultimate goal of many eco-cities is to eliminate all carbon waste, to produce energy entirely through renewable sources, and to incorporate the environment into the city; however, eco-cities also have the intentions of stimulating economic growth, reducing poverty, organizing cities to have higher population densities, and therefore higher efficiency, and improving health.

11/6/15 Five Key Sustainability Areas

11/6/15 Sustainable Development Some Definitions Sustainable development is a way for people to use resources without the resources running out At the core of sustainable development is the matter of meeting people s needs for a home, for a decent job, for education for their children, for good heath care, and for a safe and healthy neighbourhood to live in Sustainable Development is meeting the needs of the present generation, without prejudicing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

11/6/15 Interrelationships Between Key Sustainability Issues

11/6/15 What is a Smart or Green Building

11/6/15 The Smart City Has Data at Its Core

11/6/15 Smart Meters?

Smart Cities/Towns Connect Smart Buildings with Smart Grids Interest in smart cities is motivated by major challenges, including climate change, economic restructuring, the move to online retail and entertainment, ageing populations, and pressures on public finances. The European Union (EU) has devoted constant efforts to devising a strategy for achieving 'smart' urban growth for its metropolitan cityregions. 18 11/6/15

11/6/15 Smart and Intelligent Buildings What does it actually mean to be a Smart Building" or Intelligent Building? "Smart" is used to describe advanced actuators, sensors and related devices. A Smart Device is operated by a microprocessor and communicates with external systems via some form of data network. An "Intelligent System" is used to describe a combination of Smart Devices and Systems, with software coordinating the Smart Items. True Intelligence implies the ability to automatically adjust operating parameters interactively between Smart Items to optimize building functionality or performance.
