Presents CASE STUDY: TERRAZZO IN HOSPITALS

HEALTHY FLOORING QUICK FACTS Terrazzo is Sustainable Terrazzo offers architects with many green features such as its recycled content and low levels of volatile organic compounds. It s a recipe to create a timeless beauty. In fact, terrazzo is non-porous and does not support bacterial growth. A seamless floor does wonders at hospitals and healthcare facilities around the world. With terrazzo, there is a huge improvement in overall indoor air quality. There waxes or special cleaners are not required. All that is needed is a mop and water to restore the sheen of the floors daily. A clean floor is a good start for designing a healthy building. Terrazzo flooring is admired for its durability, making it a new floor trend in healthcare facilities. Terrazzo has incredible design features. Floors can consist of fragmented chips of quartz, granite, marble, glass or even seashells. Terrazzo is Durable Terrazzo s durability is unmatched by any other flooring system on the market today. With a compressive strength that can combat heavy medical equipment and foot traffic over the years. Terrazzo is also easy to maintain. Whereas materials like carpet require a more rigorous cleaning method, terrazzo can be cleaned in an effortless way. With an easy to maintain floor, healthcare facilities can offer a seamless finish for its patients - one that eliminates joints and noise throughout the building. Terrazzo floor are non-porous and cures quickly, making it beneficial in hospitals for its indoor air quality. Terrazzo can consist of renewables, making it a sustainable material to use in green buildings. The landscape of healthcare design is changing. New technology and innovative designs have transformed patients experiences. For many healthcare facilities, finding the right design helps give patients a satisfying experience but also reduces facility maintenance costs. Modern designs also attempt to attract new patients. Enter terrazzo. Terrazzo is a popular flooring choice for many healthcare institutions today. Terrazzo is made from marble, glass or shell chips set in concrete and polished to give the floor a smooth surface. Studies have shown that terrazzo is quite therapeutic. By installing a terrazzo floor, hospitals have seen benefits such as reduced stress, reduced pain and faster recovery times among its patients. The impact of design can have a positive outcome on many patients today. 2 Terrazzo is Flexible in Design Terrazzo adds a pleasant surprise to healthcare facilities with its design capabilities. The material offers numerous color options along with intricate strip designs. For children s hospitals, a terrazzo floor with vibrant colors and creative works of art can help establish the tone of a building, making it accommodating for a younger age group. Terrazzo can also work to provide navigational guides for patients and visitors to designated areas of the facility. With terrazzo, hospitals can transform into an extravagant institution. Orlando Veterans Medical Center Fueling Change in Healthcare Design Location: Architects have a variety of flooring options when it comes to designing a healthcare facility. While it depends on the situation, terrazzo was a perfect match for the Orlando Veterans Medical Center in Florida. Orlando, FL Contractor: Brasfield & Gorrie Architect: RLF Architects Scope: Epoxy terrazzo Pre-cast Stair and Risers LEED Status: Gold 4 A great choice for lobbies and high-traffic areas, designers are turning to terrazzo for it s seamless transitions, durability and low maintenance. These floors offer a sheen at relatively low maintenance, giving a hospital like the one at Orlando Veterans Medical Center with a modern and professional looking floor. In addition, terrazzo floors assist in wayfinding. Decorative patterns like the ones found here help people find the right destination. Going from point A to point B has never been simpler.

USA Women s & Children s Hospital A Hospital Kids are Not Afraid to Go To Location: The USA Women s & Children s Hospital in Mobile, Alabama takes a leap in the right direction with it s hospital design. To appeal to children of all ages, the architects decided to blend together cool colors to liven up the atmosphere, creating a design that resembles an ocean. The design fits well in integrating the building with the hospital s friendly staff and family-centered care. Mobile, AL Contractor: Doster Construction Company, Inc. Architect: Tro Jung Brannen Scope: Epoxy terrazzo LEED Status: Target LEED Gold 6 More than ever before, aesthetics are playing a larger role in flooring choices. For this floor s design, the architect went with a four-epoxy resin color design which uses a mixture of blue recycled glass, exotic seashells and a light blend of marble chips. All this was to create a soothing environment with waves that navigate patients down the hallway and images of water and a gentle breeze among the imagery in the terrazzo floor. Hospitals can evoke different emotions. With the sick and the hurt waiting to meet the doctor, it can be an unpleasant experience for anyone. But to accommodate patients during their stay at the hospital, a different approach must be determined. The goal shifts to making each visit quick and pain-free. When hospitals elect to include terrazzo in its overall design, it can create a place that evokes a new set of emotions emotions of happiness, comfort and hope. Many hospitals intend to pursue LEED status, which brings great benefits to its patients, doctors and visitors. Terrazzo is among the materials that can lead this change. 3

Levine Cancer Center Patient Care and Research Location: At the Levine Cancer Center at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, tremendous effort goes into supporting cancer patients. This state-of-the-art building focuses on developing on-going research and innovation treatment programs. Completed in 2012, this facility includes terrazzo flooring throughout the building. Charlotte, NC Contractor: Rodgers Builders Inc. Architect: O Dell Associates, Inc. Scope: Epoxy terrazzo The floor includes three epoxy resin colors and a blend of yellow and golden standard terrazzo chips. Rodgers Builders Inc. will expand the facility in 2018, doubling the size of the existing facility. Today s medical facilities are continuously looking for high-tech methods to improve patient care. As a result, it makes to match the equipment with a floor that is just as modern and efficient. With a floor that both chemical and bacteria resistant, staff members can focus less on maintaining the floor and more focus on discovering breakthroughs in medical research and patient care. 8
