2009 Residential Solar Water Heating Market By Region* Northwest: 500 Systems Midwest and Other: 5000 Systems NY and New England: 1500 Systems Hawaii: 1000 Systems California: 1000 Systems Arizona: 1500 Systems Carolinas and SE: 2500 Systems * Source = Les Nelson, Chair Solar Energy Industries Association, Thermal Division Florida: 1500 Systems
Primary Types of Solar Water Heating Systems Passive No pumps or controllers Thermosiphon Active (pumped) systems Utilizes pumps and differential controllers
How Thermosiphon Works 1. Heat is absorbed by collectors and passed to the heat transfer fluid (HTF) inside collectors. 2. As HTF temp. increases, the hot fluid rises into heat exchanger surrounding tank, heating the water in the tank indirectly. Cooler fluid, having given off its heat, is displaced to the bottom of the collectors 3. Most solar water heating systems are pre-heaters to existing water heaters 4. Thermosiphon can provide between 50 & 70% of annual hot water needs in most climates
Solar with Single Electric Tank Single 4500W back up element Low solar conditions High demand 80 gal tank @ 42 gallon backup 2-3 people 120 gal tank @ 55 gallon backup 4-5 people Need backup system in most areas Two tanks Large footprint
Rheem s Gas SolPak 75 gallon gas water heater Double wall heat exchanger Single tank closed loop solution Small footprint Fast recovery Rheem Guardian FVIR technology No Filters, standard service parts All major system components from Rheem
Standard SolPak with Tankless Small footprint single tank solution Match tankless to demand of home Multi-units acceptable Max inlet of 140 0 to tankless Provides economy of solar Provides unlimited hot water
