LANDSCAPES & NATIONAL IDENTITY Landscapes play a powerful role in the creation of national identities. People connect with an image of a landscape. This has an impact on how they see themselves as a national community. Landscapes also build a sense of belonging that helps define people s attitudes and perspectives. Pearson, 2014 Landscapes have a lot of meaning to people Backdrop of our day-to-day lives Link people to nature Link past and present Some landscapes symbolise a nation, such as the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France Content adapted from: Pearson Australia (2014) Geography 8 Student book, chapter 2.2 Landscapes and National Identity,
