1. Outdoor Exhibition Project Background Master Plan Goals 2. Master Plan Goals 3. Research + Site Analysis 4. Outdoor Exhibition Location Investigation 5. Future History + Visitor Ctr. Location Investigation

Master Plan Goals Primary Goals: 1. Improve vehicle/pedestrian/bike circulation Alleviate traffic and congestion on the site, increase safety for bikes and pedestrians, and enhance the visitor experience, while minimizing the visual impact of vehicles on views of the Golden Gate Bridge and of the Golden Gate. 2. Locate and design Outdoor Exhibition Space Find a location for the Outdoor Exhibition Area that provides a rich visitor experience and ease of access to the exhibits while still allowing varied use of the site. In addition, the location of the Outdoor Exhibition Space should not be in conflict with the future History and Visitor Center. 3. Locate future History and Visitor Center Identify potential locations for the future History and Visitor Center and develop an understanding of the impact of these sites on the other master plan goals. 17

Master Plan Goals Other items to be addressed by the Master Plan: 4. Improve visitor facilities While improvements are being made, there is an opportunity to consider a wider scope of visitor services provided on the site and how the quantities and locations of these will be impacted by the new Outdoor Exhibition and future History and Visitor Center. 5. Clearer wayfinding for bicycle/pedestrian routes (separate from traffic) In addition to improving circulation on the site, the means of understanding the site can also be improved. Not only wayfinding signage, but introductions to the various narratives on the site could be augmented and clarified. 6. Consolidate maintenance areas + ease service circulation A comprehensive master plan should examine maintenance areas and service circulation on the site since it will soon have more visitors and additional service requirements. Although it was one of the original goals, a detailed study of service on the site was outside the scope of the master plan. 7. Identify opportunities for future outdoor exhibition areas on other themes such as history, sustainability, and the natural environment The story of the engineering and construction of the bridge is just one of many narratives present on the site. Future outdoor exhibition rooms could tell other parts of the story and connect to similar narratives in the larger Presidio and GGNRA. 18

Other Planning Efforts: General Objectives of the General Master Plan for the Presidio The Presidio Trust Act requires the Presidio Trust to manage the Presidio according to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area Act (GGNRA Act) and the General Master Plan for the Presidio, prepared by the National Park Service in 1994. For this purpose, on March 4, 1999, the Presidio Trust Board of Directors issued Resolution 99-11, adopting the following general objectives of the General Management Plan as guiding principles for the management of the Presidio property and resources: 1. To preserve and (where appropriate) enhance the historical, cultural, natural, recreational, and scenic resources of the Presidio. 2. To address the needs of Presidio visitors, tenants, and residents for community services such as transportation, water, power, waste management, and public safety (among others) in an environmentally responsible manner, while respecting neighboring communities. 3. To increase open space, consolidate developed space, and provide for appropriate uses of the Presidio, including uses that involve stewardship and sustainability, cross-cultural and international cooperation, community service and restoration, health and scientific discovery, recreation, the arts, education, research, innovation, and/or communication. In addition to establishing unique goals, the Golden Gate Bridge Master Plan looked to previous master planning efforts. In July, 1994, the National Park Service created a comprehensive and detailed Final General Management Plan Amendment for the Presidio entitled Creating a Park for the 21st Century; from military post to national park. The Presidio Trust adopted and summarized the general objectives of the 1994 General Management Plan in the resolution at left. Content from the 1994 General Management Plan relating directly to the Golden Gate Bridge Master Plan site is on the following page. 4. To sustain the Presidio indefinitely as a great national park in an urban setting. 19

Other Planning Efforts: This page, from the GGNRA - 1994 Final General Management Plan Amendment, shows the concept for the Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza/ Fort Point area of the Presidio. A new master plan effort is just beginning to update this vision for the area. 20 the GGNRA - 1994 Final General Management Plan Amendment
