South West Aerospace South West Aerospace: a sophisticated and strategic cluster 2016 National Composites Centre With over 3,000 companies, the UK is Europe s leading aerospace manufacturing nation, second in the world only to the United States. The UK is a global leader in some of the most advanced parts of modern aircraft. It supplies almost every major aircraft platform with wings, engines, aero-structures and advanced systems, generating over 31 billion turnover and exporting over 90% of its production. Valued at 7 billion and supporting up to 98,000 jobs in the wider economy, the South West Aerospace Cluster is recognised as the UK s most capable and diverse aerospace region. Home to all of the top 15 global aerospace companies (per Deloitte), the Cluster has an unmatched breadth and depth of aerospace capability. From aero-structures to aero-engines, rotorcraft to landing gear, electronic systems to autonomy and robotics, the Cluster is a world-leader.

South West Aerospace Growth powered by innovation Driven by competitive global challenges the South West Aerospace Cluster is leading a revolution in high value design and manufacturing. High value design is fast becoming the driving force for innovation. It enables increased productivity, agility and integration across the supply chain and throughout the entire product life-cycle. Radical and novel approaches to design are facilitated by advances in materials and manufacturing technologies, also major strengths of the South West. Companies in the region ensure that the South West and the UK remain at the forefront of global aerospace University of Bath through major international research and development programmes. These programmes improve aircraft manufacturing and performance, increase competitiveness, reduce costs, noise and emissions. The industry capitalised on a variety of research centres, from additive manufacturing to composite materials and advanced simulation. Driving innovation through the supply chain Aligned with the aims and ambitions of the UK s Aerospace Growth Partnership, iaero is supported by OEMs including Airbus, GE Aviation, GKN Aerospace, Leonardo Helicopters, Rolls-Royce, SMEs and the public sector. The programme is creating an environment to support business incubation, innovation development and collaborative working. Key companies are collaborating to deliver a regional platform for innovation and growth through aerospace technology, skills, supply chain and manufacturing development. The National Aerospace Technology Exploitation Programme is designed to cultivate a supply chain that is rich in new technology and highly innovative. South West projects include composite materials, design, modelling and software, coatings, additive layer manufacturing, UAV avionics and fibre optics. Engineering the future The South West Aerospace Cluster is shaping the future while building on a proud heritage and tradition. Gooch & Housego Significant R&D investments ensure that the Cluster plays a pivotal role in the creation of a new and emerging market for the operation of UAV/UAS in civil airspace. Key technologies being developed in the region include ground-based flight, propulsion systems and autonomous air-to-air refuelling systems. Newquay Cornwall Airport has been shortlisted as the potential location for the UK s first Spaceport with horizontal launches in 2020, and the UK s Satellite Applications Catapult has established a South West Centre of Excellence. With its ambitions to continually break technological boundaries, the South West is an attractive location for innovative aerospace companies.
