Page 2 of 7 - Info sheet 202 Bonding teak boat decks with SABA Deckfast MS, version 2008-02-25 EN 1 Introduction The SABA Marine range consists of various bonding and sealing for the professional yacht builder. See Info sheet "Bonding and sealing for ship building" for a summary. This info sheet shows how a deck bonding is accomplished using SABA. The instructions are also applicable to deck bonding with Sabaflex 500 (PU-based adhesive). A teak boat deck, with or without a layer of marine plywood, is bonded constructively to a ship's deck with SABA Deckfast MS. This makes a reliable construction which is resistant to fresh and salt water. The illustration below shows how SABA Deckfast MS is applied: Bonding the teak sections directly to the boat deck using SABA Deckfast MS. Teak sections bonded to a levelling layer of marine plywood, whereby the plywood and teak are bonded with SABA Deckfast MS SABA Deckfast MS can be used for bonding: - Intermediate layer of plywood to the deck - Teak deck sections to the plywood - Teak sections onto wood, steel, aluminium or polyester boat decks (directly). SABA Deckfast MS has the following specific properties - Long processing time (open time frame): approximately 60 minutes at 23 C and 75 % relative air humidity - Easy and fast processing - Remains flexible - Effective and durable bonding to many surfaces - Forms a very durable, water-proof layer - Levelling - Does not shrink during hardening - Resistant to (sea) water and weather conditions - Solvent-free. Our recommendations and instructions for use are based on the present status of know-how and technique. Clients and users should evaluate our

Page 3 of 7 - Info sheet 202 Bonding teak boat decks with SABA Deckfast MS, version 2008-02-25 EN 2 Applying SABA Deckfast MS General Protect your work from direct sunlight and rain during application. Before and after the application, note down the conditions, the used, their batch numbers and the work carried out in the SABA Marine Activity sheet. This helps to safeguard the quality of your project. The SABA Marine Activity Sheet can be found at the back of this info sheet. 2.1 Preparation of surface Remove any old layers of adhesive so that the surface is clean. The surface must be free of oils, grease, corrosion, mill-scale and dust. De-grease the surfaces to be bonded with SABA Cleaner. The choice of cleaner (SABA Cleaner 21 or SABA Cleaner 48) depends on the type of surface on the boat deck and can be found in the primer table at the back of this info sheet. Allow the solvent to evaporate completely after de-greasing (at least 15 minutes). Cleaning the teak: the bonding surfaces must be dry, clean and free of dust and grease. Remove loose dust particles. Use a clean cloth (which does not fluff) or a brush and SABA Cleaner 21 to de-grease the teak. Remarks: - The primer table shows the preparation necessary for each surface. - De-grease new polyester several times with SABA Cleaner 48. Allow the surface to evaporate properly (it must be free of styrene). - In order to realise a better mechanical bond, sanding the surface is recommended in combination with de-greasing. 2.2 Processing Remarks: - The air temperature during processing must be at least 5 C. - The temperature of the surface must be at least 3 C above the dew point. The dew point can be derived from the ambient temperature and the air humidity. - The bonding surfaces must be sufficiently dry and the moisture percentage may be 15% (for teak 14%) at the most. The moisture percentage can be measured with a 'protimeter' or similar device. - See also the "Humidity measurement and dew point determination" Info sheet. Use a manual or air-pressure spray gun to process 600 ml cartridges or 310 ml tubes. Our recommendations and instructions for use are based on the present status of know-how and technique. Clients and users should evaluate our

Page 4 of 7 - Info sheet 202 Bonding teak boat decks with SABA Deckfast MS, version 2008-02-25 EN Spread SABA Deckfast MS with an adhesive spreader Spread SABA Deckfast MS using an adhesive spreader, until an even and completely filled-in layer of at least 2 mm and no more than 10 mm has been formed between the surface and the wood (teak). This is important as it prevents water penetrating underneath the teak ship deck. Join the (teak) wood sections within the processing time. The processing time for SABA Deckfast MS is 60 minutes. 2.3 Fixing and hardening It is imperative that the contact between deck, plywood and SABA Deckfast MS is thorough, for example by mechanical fixation (screws) or stamping. This means that the force must be sufficient and maintained throughout the entire hardening time of the adhesive. NB: Ask SABA for advice if you wish to use the vacuum method for fixation. Remarks: - Allow the bonded deck to harden sufficiently before you seal it. - Allow a deck that has been bonded with Sabaflex 500 to harden for at least 1 week (dependant on the thickness of the adhesive layer and at 23 C and 75% relative air humidity), before sealing with SABA Seal One Fast. Hardening system SABA Deckfast MS is a moisture hardening system. Therefore take account of the weather conditions. Temperature and air humidity especially influence the processing and hardening speed. The hardening speed of SABA Deckfast MS is approx. 2 mm / 24 hour at 23 C and 75% relative air humidity. Our recommendations and instructions for use are based on the present status of know-how and technique. Clients and users should evaluate our
