The result is a mid-century modern inspired kitchen that is open and bright, supremely functional and reflects the home's overall design. Transplants from Texas, Juanita and her husband, Paul, bought their home in Anchorage two years prior. I knew the direction we wanted to go, and we all built on ideas together. Built in 1965, the property retained the original kitchen design, a galley style arrangement that felt closed off from the rest of the home and lacked functional space. It was what the designers call a 'one-butt' kitchen, said Patterson. If you had anything open, like the dishwasher or the oven, you couldn't move around at all. After years of tripping over two dogs and each other while preparing meals, it was time for a change. floorplan space and more room to walk around. She also wanted to ensure the new design fit with the overall style of her home. The house is mid-century modern, which is really unusual in Alaska, said Patterson. After interviewing two other designers, Patterson connected with Jana Seda of Trailboss Solutions, LLC. Jana was definitely on the same wavelength that we were, said Patterson. It was a perfect fit for Seda as well. I knew the direction we wanted to go, and we all built on ideas together. Juanita and I have similar likes so it was really easy to come up with colors and selections, she said. Patterson is thrilled with the results. I love the openness of it, she said. As a bonus, the couple is now able to enjoy their other favorite home feature, a central atrium full of 40-year-old tropical plants, from the kitchen area. In Alaska, that's a real treat, said Patterson. It has four skylights, so now we have all this natural light. Dave M. Davis Photography 26 l alaska s best kitchens l S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2 0 1 2

For Carl Rosen, it was to model his Anchorage home after his grandmother's house in Forest Hills, Queens (one of New York City's five boroughs) where he and his family lived. Helping Carl and his wife Raechel remodel an existing space into a second kitchen was designer Jana Seda of Trailboss Solutions, LLC. She loved that her clients were very specific on what they wanted. For Jana, two highlights stood out. First, the Rosens requested an organic look by utilizing natural materials-such as stone and wood-as much as possible. Second, how the rich patina of copper added luxurious touches and warmth to the overall design, as the photos show. The gently curved custom copper hood above the stove nicely complemented the hand-hammered copper sink. But, as Jana pointed out, this large custom sink came much deeper than expected. So, we ended up pulling the cabinets forward to give the area a 'bumped out' look. It actually worked well with the style of the kitchen, she said. Another challenge were some weird soffits imposed upon the small space. Jana had to get creative for more functional space. Luminous organic materials and their surfaces reflected a larger space, too. Coffee-stained alder wood of the cabinets imparted a delicious nutmeg sheen. Juparana bronze granite countertops added a classy shimmy to surface work areas. Artistic stone and metal inlays on the backsplash reflected nicely off the granite countertops. At the end of the day, it's been a very worthwhile endeavor for Carl and his family. His advice is simply: Stay in school, get a good job and save to build the home of your dreams! warm memories Dave M.
