6 7 Creating distinctive places with character Areas of expertise At the heart of all of Pelham Architect s residential schemes are the people that will live and thrive in their new homes. Designs are driven by the desire to create distinctive places with character, that are safe and secure. We maximise living space and ensure that dwellings are low maintenance and have low fuel costs. Urban Pelham Architects have a strong record of producing successful housing schemes in dense urban environments. We relish the challenge of creatively injecting life into the townscape with environmentally astute solutions. Rural Working closely with parish councils and local authorities, we work hard to ensure rural schemes are designed with the views of the local community at the heart of the design, building houses that blend perfectly into their surroundings. Conservation Pelham Architects are committed to preserving important buildings whilst invigorating and best equipping them for future use. We have experience in working with local authority conservation departments, planning departments and English Heritage to achieve outstanding and sustainable results. Conversion Giving buildings a new lease of life helps to retain our built heritage and can be an environmentally friendly way of developing. We have a range of experience in converting redundant buildings into new uses, including the recent conversion of a redundant nursery building which was housed in a nineteenth century home into new training facilities for NCHA. Specialist accommodation Pelham Architects work closely with care and support providers to provide bespoke housing solutions. Recent projects include a scheme of dementia friendly bungalows and supported living housing schemes for adults with learning disabilities. Specialist housing requires sensitivity and creativity to ensure a domestic feel is maintained whilst providing the necessary care and support facilities for residents. We work towards achieving HAPPI 2 principles for the design of older persons accommodation.

Our projects 8 9 arboretum square, derby Breathing life back into empty homes Pelham Architects worked with Derby City Council to bring back into use three large empty homes that were in a terrible state of disrepair, and a target for anti-social behaviour. Combining conservation work with energy saving technology, the homes were beautifully and sensitively restored to provide quality, fuel efficient homes in this historic square in the heart of Derby. The City Council and the Pelham Architects partnership has been a great demonstration of how organisations can work together to improve communities and ensure empty properties do not stay empty. Councillor Philip Ingall, Derby City Council Holdingham Mead, Lincolnshire Gateway to the bustling market town of Sleaford The creative design for this 97 home scheme has re-enforced the sense of arrival to Sleaford. Most of the houses and flats are three storeys making use of the roof spaces. The road layout utilises home-zone principles and materials to help create a coherent link between the properties and the external environment. The design uses a mix of natural materials and modern styling to give a contemporary yet rural feel to the development.

Our projects 10 11 Duffield Court, Top Valley Problem solving in the heart of a community The derelict site in the heart of an existing community was tendered in a competition by Nottingham City Council, with NCHA and Pelham Architects winning with their proposal for a striking crescent form to the houses. The site was steeply sloping which was addressed by utilising split level house designs, some of which still achieved Lifetime Homes. We used 3D modelling to achieve an accurate build.

12 13 ASHBY ROAD, COALVILLE Stylish chimneys adding character Pelham Architects worked closely with North-West Leicestershire s urban designers to develop 37 homes following the principles of Building for Life. The scheme has produced a layout with courtyards and terraces that is in keeping with the traditional homes in Coalville, but re-interpreted in a contemporary way. Pelham Architects design and build has helped breath new life into Coalville town centre. Councillor Bayliss, North West Leicestershire District Council Wirksworth, Derbyshire New homes in conservation areas In order to achieve the local authority s requirement of a concept of cottages style properties, the design of the scheme uses local details and materials including timber windows and dry stone walling. The layout was carefully considered to deal with extreme changes of level in a way appropriate to its rural location and to be in keeping with the character of this conservation area of Wirksworth. On a challenging conservation site, the properties fit in seamlessly with their surroundings creating a sense of place within the community. Ian Clyde, Acclaim Housing Group

14 15 tilton on the hill, leicestershire Partnership working to create stunning results Working closely with the local parish council was imperative in creating this unique development on a rural exception site at the edge of Tilton on the Hill. The scheme utilises local details such as Flemish Garden Wall Bond for the brick facades, and with creative use of design and layout, the homes blend perfectly into the existing surroundings. Innovative solutions were used to overcome the lack of a gas supply to the village, including a mix of air source heat pumps with solar hot water panels. HALL DRIVE, BEESTON Speciality housing-changing lives for people in need This housing scheme was developed in partnership with Broxtowe Borough Council and provides eight flats for adults with learning difficulties, plus two bungalows which are fully adapted for wheelchair users. It was important to maintain independence for residents, which has been achieved through the use of separate entrances and private staircases.

16 17 pelham house, nottingham A unique building with a new lease of life Pelham Architects were responsible for the conservation, design and renovation of Pelham House which now provides training and office accommodation for Nottingham Community Housing Association. This 125 year old building has been transformed to allow attractive, functional three storey accommodation, with the preservation of its historical features being of paramount importance throughout the process. Working in such a beautiful building has changed my whole approach to coming to work. Pam Hannam, NCHA

18 19 Birstall, Leicester In keeping design for a corner location Pelham Architects were approached by Waters Homes Ltd to design a private housing scheme on the site of a vacant public house. The design incorporates curved corner houses to make a feature of the corner location of the site which links the design to the 30 s and 50 s style housing adjacent. Pelham Architects offered us a perfect design for our private development. We re thrilled with the results as are the new homeowners. Dominic Waters, Waters Homes Ltd. Ruby Court, Southwell Making the most of difficult spaces Built on disused land behind a row of existing dwellings in the market town of Southwell, Pelham Architects sympathetically designed this scheme of 8 affordable homes. Adjacent to a conservation area, the homes were built to meet sustainability standards including high grade insulation and rain water harvesting. Affordable rural housing is very much in demand, and this site in Southwell is the perfect place for people with a connection to the area to set up home. Mike Andrews, Chief Executive of NCHA
