1 Summary

Summary 3 Introduction Vision To provide a facility that supports the College of Allied Health and Nursing s vision to be recognized at the state, regional, and national level for excellence in providing innovative and flexible high quality educational programs / models, responsive to student learning needs through service, education partnerships, and distance learning technology that meet the extraordinary challenges and opportunities in the allied health and nursing fields. Project Goals The new Clinical Sciences Building shall: foster inter-professional interaction / collaboration provide a welcoming image to the public and patients provide space for program growth provide flexibility in the built environment provide up-to-date technology and tele-medicine capabilities While the building focuses on clinical services and learning environments, the building will also provide shared educational and meeting space for the entire CAHN college, giving students a home base on campus and faculty members collaborative environments. It is critically important for the building to provide facilities and opportunities for the entire college, including those departments whose offices and labs are not relocating. Additionally, the building shall: add distinction to the campus and signal what is central to MSUM s identity and mission celebrate learning, enhance the experience of learning, and inspire learners at all levels be a laboratory for learning, modeling creative and cost-effective practices Process A new College of Allied Health and Nursing building has gone through several iterations over the past two decades. An original, basic space program was created by the College and Paulsen Architects in the late 1990 s, establishing a basic project vision (including all departments) with space needs. In 2005, HGA prepared a pre-design report, developing the program from the initial space listing to a more comprehensive space needs summary and room criteria. However, due to construction cost restraints, the building program was narrowed to focus on clinical and laboratory spaces. HGA completed the pre-design report in 2010. In 2012, MSUM engaged Perkins+Will for complete design services, including program verification, for the new Clinical Sciences Building.

4 Summary Steinberg Architects, in conjunction with Perkins+Will, led a program verification and planning effort from November 2012 to January 2013. This process included various programming workshops and meetings with the building users, campus facilities, and College leadership where design objectives, space needs, room criteria, and planning requirements were discussed and refined. This report documents the results, complimenting and updating the original HGA Pre-design report. Building Program 9 Program Description Design Goals The overall goal for the Clinical Sciences Building is to create a welcoming and cohesive building that will provide high quality clinical and educational spaces for the College of Allied Health and Nursing (CAHN). The new building is intended to be a one stop shop for CAHN clinical patients. A shared patient waiting area / check-in provides clinical visitors with a single entry point, simplifying way-finding and reducing duplicated spaces across departments. Shared consultation rooms not only provide departments located outside the building consult space but also create opportunities for interdisciplinary patient consultation. Additionally, the new building strives to create an educational home for the College of Allied Health and Nursing on the campus. Shared classrooms, meeting rooms, and student/faculty interaction space will provide students from all CAHN departments with a variety of learning environments surrounded by both their peers and their mentors. Summary The new Clinical Sciences Building includes offices, labs, clinics, and classrooms. Both Dental Hygiene and Speech, Hearing, and Rehabilitation Services (SHRS) will move their department offices, labs, and clinics into the new building. For CAHN faculty outside the new building, shared meeting rooms, hoteling space, and collaborative work areas are provided, allowing faculty to touch-down between classes or meetings. The School of Nursing will move its clinical skills and simulation environments into the new building. The building will provide more simulation environments, larger skills instruction areas, and break-out learning areas called integration stations. In the spirit of collaboration and increased efficiency, a large portion of the program consists of shared spaces. Five new general classrooms will serve the entire college for lecture classes. A shared CPR / Skills lab and a Home Health Lab will provide multiple departments with flexible, yet skill specific instructional spaces. Lastly, a variety of meeting spaces (student/faculty interaction spaces, break-out spaces, graduate student work room, etc.) will provide students with collaborative work environments to continue learning outside the traditional classroom. In the following pages, the program is described as both a matrix of space needs as well as a visual program. Descriptions of individual specialized spaces follow in the Room Criteria Sheets. This section is not a stand-alone document and should be studied closely with the adjacency and blocking / stacking diagrams in Section Three to understand the full scope and requirements of the comprehensive building program.

10 Building Program Terminology In compiling a space summary, a number of terms are used to identify the appropriate area for the building. The subsequent sheets use the following terminology to generate the building s space needs. Stations*: the number of seats and/or occupants per room ASF/Stations*: the assigned square footage of a space per station/occupant Assignable Square Feet (ASF): the assigned square footage of space (equal to station times ASF/stations); typically described as wall-to-wall Quantity: the number of rooms Total ASF: equal to the assignable square feet (ASF) times the number of rooms Suite Circulation: area for hallways/corridors within a department or cluster of spaces off of the main building circulation Non-assignable Square Feet: the area in a building not accounted for in assigned square footage; includes area for wall thickness, structure, circulation, restrooms, etc. Gross Square Feet: total square footage of the building measured from the outside walls *Number of stations and ASF/stations are used to derive the size of many types of spaces, including classrooms, labs and clinical environments. In these cases, the number of stations and size per station are the driving factor behind room size. Where spaces do not have the number of stations listed, the room size is based on a different factor (e.g. functional size requirements, industry standards, etc.).

Spatial Relationships 65 Adjacency Diagrams Introduction Adjacency Diagrams describe space/room groupings and their spatial relationships. Program pieces with specific, critical adjacencies are included in the following diagrams. Support spaces (such as restrooms) and program pieces with no critical adjacencies (such as a general classrooms) are not illustrated. Within in each adjacency diagram, a room or space is represented by a colored block. This block shows the scaled size of the room/space in comparison to the other spaces. For specific room layout information, see the Room Criteria sheet in Section Two. A graphic item (example: dotted line) between spaces or around spaces delineates different types of relationships. A legend for these graphic items appears on each page. Spatial Relationships 73 Blocking & Stacking Diagrams Introduction This section, Blocking & Stacking Diagrams, includes three preliminary options for organizing the program elements identified within this report into a building layout. Each option explores a different design concept--often referred to as the big idea. Each big idea, illustrated in its name and parti diagram, provides the rationale for how departments and program types are arranged in relation to each other and to the external environment. While these diagrams illustrate approximate floor plate sizes and proportions, they do not represent the final building design. Of the three options, options A and B are based on a three story building. Option C can work as either a two or three-story building. In all three options, the primary clinical environments occur on the ground floor for immediate patient/visitor access and entry.

74 Spatial Relationships Option A: Collaboration Spine Building Diagram CIRCULATION SPINE / ATRIUM CORE PROGRAM COLLABORATION SPINE Organized along an axial circulation path, the collaboration spine divides the building into two zones: (1) a formal core program zone and (2) an active collaboration zone. The collaboration zone, a three story high atrium and circulation space, could occur on the north or south side of the building, relating to either the southern public environment or the northern campus arboretum. Within the core program zone, shared spaces--clinical, simulation, and work space--are stacked vertically adjacent to the building entry and elevator core.

76 Spatial Relationships Option B: Central Hub Building Diagram CENTRAL HUB CORE PROGRAM CENTRAL HUB Organized around a central atrium gathering space, the hub provides not only the building but also the campus with a center of activity for informal social and educational interaction. The multi-story space looks out onto (and relates to) the campus arboretum to the north. On upper levels, circulation and interaction space overlook the atrium, connecting to the activity while providing more secluded gathering areas. This option places the shared central clinic space at the building exterior, allowing for a separate clinical front door. In addition to easing identity and way-finding issues, providing a separate clinical entry helps divide patients and visitors from the general student population.
