Basic Weatherization Conservation Measures & Efficiency Water Heater Insulation and Other Conservation Measures Instructor Lecture Notes 1. Types of water heaters 2. Materials for insulating water heater 3. Conditions for feasibility 4. Steps for blanket installation 5. Pipe insulation 6. Shower heads and aerators 7. CFL - thread based and hardwired

Basic Weatherization Conservation Measures & Efficiency Water Heater Insulation and Other Conservation Measures Instructor Lecture Notes Answers 1. Types of water heaters Electric water heater, gas water heater. Electric has cord, gas has exhaust flue--both are insulated and gas is the one we will see around here. 2. Materials for insulating water heater R-6, fiberglass with vinyl or foil face. Use metal tape or vinyl, also three straps, use scissors to cut the blanket. 3. Conditions for feasibility Check to make sure it is out of weather, there are no gas or water leaks. It must vent properly and have proper combustion air, top and bottom vents. New water heaters do not need insulation, they already have it. Make sure there is no soot, this is a sign of incomplete combustion. There needs to be 1 space all around and at least 4 in front. The supply pipe needs to meet modern code and there must be a shut-off valve. T&P valve and drain pipe must be installed. 4. Steps for blanket installation 1-check location, 2-check for leaks, 3-check combustion air, 4-check for leaks, 5-clean off tank, 6- cut blanket to length, 7-wrap blanket and mark label location, 8-tape blanket to tank, tape seam and top, 9-cut label flap and mark the flap, 10-install three straps, 11-insulate water pipes SECTION 5 WIS 5. Pipe insulation Use proper size, tape all joints, miter corners, cope intersections, put slits on horizontals down. Use metal tape or glue, use snap ties 1 from end and 12 apart SECTION 5 & 6 WIS 6. Shower heads and aerators 2.5 gpm, put on by hand and use Teflon tape. Areators put on by hand, they restrict water flow. Do not put showerheads on plastic arms SECTION 8 WIS 7. CFL thread based and hardwired May install up to 5 CFLs in one house. Do not install in inoperable or dimmable or fixture or one with a timer. Fixtures should be grounded and to building code.
