Ventura MC Book Sewing Machine The fine art of thread sewing Tightly sewn bookblocks, each signature in the right place and all this at the highest production speed on all formats that is what bookbinders expect. The Ventura MC book sewing machine meets these challenging expectations. Efficient manufacturing of books with spine lengths from 120 to 510 mm is possible in one-up as well as multiple-up productions. Many size adjustments are carried out automatically and are easy to reproduce. The machine production data are input over the Commander touchscreen. The two-part sewing saddle, the motorized positioning of signatures and the air-jet generated thread loops are the highlights that make the Ventura MC produce highquality bookblocks at low costs. Reliable signature separation 1 2 Ergonomically designed feeder The feeder stack hopper comes with a 30 inclination to allow ergonomic manual loading. The lateral feeder hopper guides can be taken off to ease the loading job for smaller-built people. Pulled in tangentially over a large-diameter drum, the signatures are separated absolutely free of drag marks. The signatures are pulled off spine first and forwarded head fold first. This technique guarantees a smooth and secure signature transport. As the feeder is geared up for linkage to the Connect system, the Ventura MC can be extended to become a VenturaConnect integrated book sewing system. ZFM stack loading system The optional automatic ZFM stack loader transports the signature stacks efficiently and safely into the feeder of the book sewing machine. All the bookbinder has to do is stack the loose book blocks up to a height of 220 mm onto a motorized roller belt with buffer function (1). Then the stacks are synchronized, forwarded onto the infeed fork and carefully deposited into the feeder hopper (2). The stack loading system allows the operator to do his job in a most flexible and efficient way. Even with delicate material safe pull-off is guaranteed. Commander with touchscreen The production data are input via the operator-prompted Commander touch-screen. Menus guide the operator through the Ventura MC setup process. Thanks to the logic screen displays, even non-experienced personnel can carry out all steps. Altogether thousand different jobs can be stored and called up at any time. A USB interface allows external data storage. Production data can be exchanged between single Ventura machines over optional Ethernet connections. 3
Flexible opening and forwarding of signatures Modular opening system The Ventura opening system offers several possibilities to open the signatures: Sword opening for products with high-folio and low-folio laps, also alternating Suction opening: four rotating telescopic suckers on each of the two sides, individually adjustable also alternating Ventura suckers for porous papers and strongly perforated signatures Opening mechanism for bible and other lightweight papers (option) These opening options allow opening of a large range of signatures. From bible paper to heavy art paper, with or without high-folio or low-folio lap, one-up or multiple-up all is possible. Even signatures with only 8-mm low-folio are opened without problems. Total quality control thanks to Asir 3 Via a patented camera attached to the auxiliary saddle, the Asir 3 monitoring system checks the correct sequence and opening of the signatures. Monitoring can be carried out via image comparison or barcode scan. For image comparison, the camera takes four pictures and compares them. The operator has the possibility to adjust the camera range for picture shooting. For absolutely clear identification of the signatures, the operator can choose the barcode scan option. Here the sensor scans the barcode on the head or foot edge. For ease of use, the Ventura Asir 3 system function is integrated in the Commander. Signature Transport The signatures are guided all the way through the Ventura. This guarantees an absolutely smooth transport without any drag marks. The motorized fold pressing rollers in the auxiliary saddle make sure that the open signatures are precision-positioned on the saddle for sewing. 4
Highly efficient sewing center: two-part saddle A two-part saddle moves the open signatures into the sewing center. The two-part design allows high speeds even in multiple-up productions as the next signature arrives on the first part of the sewing saddle while the one before is still being sewn on the second part. On the sewing saddle, the signature is positioned to the right. The short way of the signature in the sewing saddle allows a higher number of cycles. 5
Highly efficient sewing center: Air-jet supported thread loop formation 1. Punch needles from below punch holes into the folded signature 2. Sewing needles pull the thread through every other hole 3. Air jets generate thread loops and guide them into the slotted lever 4. The hook needle takes hold of the loop. Then hook needle and sewing needle pull the thread upwards generating the loop strand. In the Ventura thread insertion is facilitated by air-jets. The sewing system patented by Müller Martini guarantees an absolutely reliable loop formation. Air jet nozzles designed without any mechanical wear parts and arranged on the right and the left of the sewing needle generate the thread loop either on the left or the right side. The loop is then taken hold of by the hook needle. The air jet direction is preselected via the Commander: always to the right for standard stitching or alternating left/right for combined staggered stitching. Book blocks made of many thin signatures build up less spine if the signatures are combined stagger-stitched. The air-jet supported sewing system of the Ventura MC allows fast and easy switching between different stitch types. What makes the Ventura most efficient is the fact that sewing is done without blind stitches. The bookblocks have short thread ends, which is highly advantageous for their further processing. And thanks to the heat-sealed thread loop ends, the bookblocks sewn tightly with the Ventura keep their compact shape. 6
Efficient delivery The Ventura offers three optional types of delivery: stacked, shingled or upright to be taken out by hand. A toothed belt also allows safe delivery of landscape sizes and bookblocks made of bible paper. In combination with a stacker, the machine can run at full speed with just one person operating it. Just one of the reasons for its great efficiency. Automatic forward- ing and subsequent palletizing of the stacks is also possible. VenturaConnect the integrated book sewing system The Ventura MC can be incorporated in the Ventura- Connect book sewing system. For this the proper connect system connects a gathering machine with one, two or three Ventura machines. This system allows a particularly efficient production of thread-sewn bookblocks. 7
