Wood pellets economical and environmentally friendly Wood pellet heating

easy wood pellet heating ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY AND ECONOMICAL Wood pellets are a biofuel that is usually manufactured from sawdust. When you use wood pellets as a fuel, the substances released into the atmosphere are re-absorbed by growing plants and trees, creating a natural cycle unlike burning fossil fuels or generating electricity from oil or coal. The net emissions of carbon dioxide are zero. Wood pellets are also a local fuel, creating employment and generating revenue within your country. WHAT ARE WOOD PELLETS? Pelletising is a way of conserving and concentrating biological material. The principle involves drying out the wood and compacting it into a narrow rod 6-12 mm in diameter. The rod is then cut into short pieces, generally around 25 mm in length. BENEFITS OF WOOD PELLETS RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCE MINIMAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT LOW PRICE EASY TO HANDLE AVAILABLE IN SACKS OR AS BULK LOADS flexible solutions for all home owners FULL RANGE DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? HOW DOES IT WORK? Wood pellets can be burned in most boilers, but it is most convenient to use a pellet boiler. A pellet store is needed, and a range of sizes is available. An WIDE CHOICE OF SUPPLIER LOCALLY PRODUCED REDUCED ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION AN EASY WAY TO SWITCH TO BIOFUELS CAN BE USED IN EXISTING BOILERS NO NEED TO CHANGE THE VENTILATION IN THE BUILDING Värmebaronen has been Sweden's biggest supplier of pellet boilers for years. Our range of boilers includes models designed for all needs. They all have the same sturdy combustion chamber, developed from our efficient, low-maintenance firewood boilers. A large ash bin means there is no need for constant emptying. Pellmax UB flexible pellet unit Pellmax VX compact with heat exchanger Pellmax CU if you want the best Biomax combining wood pellets and firewood YOUR DEALER WILL GLADLY ASSIST YOU. In order to be able to assist you quickly and properly, we need some information regarding your current heating system and what you would like to change How big is your house? What kind of heating system do you use today? How old is your heating system? Where do you live? auger is used to automatically feed the wood pellets from the store to the pellet burner. Viking Bio tried and tested pellet burner FOR LOW-COST HEATING In recent years, there has been dispute about which method of heating is the cheapest. The price of pellets has stayed more or less the same, and availability has been good. Generally speaking, the operating costs are comparable www.varmebaronen.se to a heat pump, although the installation cost is lower for wood pellets. The disadvantage of wood pellets is that they need a certain amount of maintenance, but with the Pellmax series, this factor has become less significant. 2 3

it really is this easy! ORDERING WOOD PELLETS If you have ever had a standard oil boiler, you know what to do simply call and order. Most major oil companies offer wood pellets. There are also many local suppliers. Remember that quality is more important than price. FROM THE STORE TO THE PELLET BURNER There are various ways you can store your wood pellets. Most people start with sacks and a small store. Fill the store with a couple of sacks, and the wood pellets are then fed to the boiler and the pellet burner. The burner works like an oil burner and does not require any maintenance. Another option is a bulk store. A bulk store works like an ordinary oil tank, and is filled by a bulk vehicle. The advantages are that you do not need to handle sacks, and the price is even lower. On the other hand, the store takes up a lot of space. COMPACT AND CONVENIENT compact solutions with a small footprint The Pellmax series makes it easy to use wood pellets as a fuel. Choose the Pellmax that best meets your needs the three different models allow you to tailor your heating system. All the boilers are compact in format, even though they include a sturdy combustion chamber and an ash bin. FREE UP SPACE IN THE CELLAR Now there is no need for cumbersome stores and augers, supply systems and chains everywhere. Unless you want them there of course. Add the compact Pelletsförråd 200 store (shown) to your Pellmax to create a neat installation with a small footprint. Pelletsförråd 200 can also be connected to a bulk store. This makes it virtually maintenance-free. PELLETS ARE ALWAYS RELIABLE In the winter of 2009 and 2010 many home owners realised that heat pumps did not work well at all when it was cold outside. The cold forced up the price of electricity, so that heat pumps became more expensive to run making them about as efficient as an electric boiler. The electricity bill came as a nasty surprise to many home owners. A pellet boiler works well whatever the temperature. NO NEED TO CHANGE THE VENTILATION IN THE BUILDING If you use wood pellets instead of a heat pump you can keep the ventilation the house was designed for without risking problems with damp. There is also no need to change the radiators even if the heating system requires high temperatures in the winter. USING WOOD PELLETS DAY TO DAY Wood pellets are convenient. If you have a bulk store, the system looks after itself. If you have a smaller store, you will need to top it up from time to time depending on how cold it is outside. You will soon work out how often you need to add more wood pellets. You will also need to check the boiler and the burner occasionally. For much of the year this will only be a couple of times a month. MAINTENANCE All types of combustion-based boilers need some kind of maintenance because they produce soot and ash. With the right pellet boiler, the work involved in minimal. The Pellmax has a large ash bin that does not need to be emptied often, and a sturdy combustion chamber with round pipes. The boilers are designed to operate for long periods while retaining their high efficiency. That is why the Pellmax does not have an automatic cleaning system with moving parts that can go wrong there is simply no need. The Pellmax needs a maximum of 10-15 minutes of maintenance per month during the heating season. Cleaning the boiler is a quick job that guarantees maximum efficiency. If you do it yourself, wood pellets become even more cost effective. 4 5

The pellet burner is not included Pellmax CU HEATING WITH OUTDOOR TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION Smart functions can reduce running costs by up to SEK 1000 per year compared to other boilers on the market. The heating control system compensates for the outdoor temperature, ensuring that the house always gets enough heat even if the temperature changes quickly outside. The boiler stops producing heat in the summer, but runs all the vital functions every day so that everything runs smoothly when autumn arrives. Together, these functions will save you money every day. PLENTY OF HOT WATER The Pellmax CU has a sturdy copper-lined water heater, serving up plenty of hot water. The boiler also has an electric backup in case the wood pellets run out. MAXIMUM ECONOMY All these functions turn the Pellmax CU into a real money saver. Outdoor temperature compensation plus intelligent control of the pellet burner will save you money while delivering maximum comfort. Wood pellets & Electricity Water heater Dimensions: W:570 H:1540 D:745 Wood pellets: 25 kw Electricity: 9 kw RSK 621 05 66 PELLMAX UB VX CU a trio for all home owners All three have a new combustion chamber, developed from our widely praised, efficient, low-maintenance firewood boilers. The Pellmax series is made in Sweden. PELLMAX UB FLEXIBLE WOOD PELLETS The UB model is a heat source that works perfectly with solar collectors and heat pumps. The solar collector can heat the water and the building in spring, summer and autumn. The wood pellets then take over in winter. The Pellmax UB is also the perfect complement to the heat pump. The colder it is outside, the less efficient the heat pump becomes. The Pellmax UB can deliver heat while it is cold outside. That is when wood pellets are cheaper. PELLMAX VX COMPACT The Pellmax VX is a solid and compact pellet boiler, using a traditional control system with mechanical thermostats. The hot water is produced by a heat exchanger. If your boiler room has a low ceiling, the Pellmax VX is a perfect choice. PELLMAX CU FOR DISCERNING USERS Our top-of-the-range pellet boiler. The CU model has a digital control system and a sturdy copper-lined water heater for maximum efficiency and comfort. There is a shunt valve with an outside temperature sensor, to make sure the house always gets exactly the right amount of heat. The boiler also includes functions for summer mode, anti-seizure pump operation and much more. Pellmax VX HOT WATER WITH HEAT EXCHANGER The Pellmax VX is controlled by mechanical thermostats that switch on the pellet burner or electricity depending on the temperature setting. If the wood pellets run out, the electricity takes over automatically. The control panel shows which energy source is being used. The heat exchanger produces hot water as it is needed. The water is heated as it passes through the heat exchanger on the way to the tap. The Pellmax VX is low in height, and is a good choice for low ceilings. All connections are easy to access. Pellmax UB COMPLEMENTS ALL HEATING SYSTEMS Whatever kind of heating you have, the Pellmax UB pellet unit will complement it perfectly. All you need is a water-based heating system and some kind of water store/accumulator tank. For example, many heat pumps are connected to tank-in-tank electric boiler indoors, where it is very straightforward to connect the Pellmax UB. The pellet unit is only 95 cm tall, and easy to find space for. Wood pellets & Electricity Heat exchanger Dimensions: W:570 H:1370 D:745 Wood pellets: 25 kw Electricity: 9 kw RSK 621 05 67 Pellet unit No hot water Dimensions: W:575 H:955 D:725 Wood pellets: 20 kw RSK 621 05 64 6 7

do you have an old boiler? the Pellmax is easier to look after every Pellmax is low maintenance Straightforward control panel. Flue pipe included. LESS CHECKING LESS WORK EASY TO CLEAN One of the main things you will notice early on is that a The round pipes in the boiler have no corners where soot purpose-built pellet boiler is much easier to look after. Your old boiler probably does not have hatches with quick-release handles, so you have to use tools to open it. The combustion chamber is designed for oil, leaving no space for the ash so you have to clean it often. Cleaning a domestic boiler is usually a difficult task, because the hatches and pipes are more or less inaccessible. The whole process is awkward and messy compared to a Pellmax boiler. Spacious combustion chamber Large ash bin and ash can collect. You can use the supplied pipe brush to clean quickly and easily from a single hatch. The large ash bin only needs to be emptied a few times a year. The hatch has a quick-release handle, allowing you to open the boiler in a matter of seconds. Clear out the burner and clean the pipes with the pipe brush. The whole job is finished in five minutes. The soot and ash are collected in the ash bin. It couldn't be easier! GREATER EFFICIENCY A Pellmax pellet boiler can deliver up to 20 % greater efficiency. This is because a pellet boiler is purpose built and optimised for wood pellets, but also because it is better insulated and more airtight than your old boiler. This minimises heat loss, saving you money. HOW LONG WILL YOUR OLD BOILER LIVE? Has your old boiler reached retirement age? Boilers often reach the end of their working life at around 15 years old. Do not be tempted to replace it with a second-hand boiler save time and money instead with a genuine Pellmax. ENVIRONMENTAL APPROVAL Pellmax CU The Pellmax, with the Viking Bio pellet burner, has been tested by SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden, and achieved excellent results. It meets the requirements of the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning. QUALITY All Pellmax pellet boilers are made to the same high quality as our sturdy firewood boilers. Tried and tested, quality down to the smallest detail. Sturdy hatches and handles Easily accessible, large ash bin 8 9

Draught hatch in the flue pipe reduces idle losses. The flue gas thermometer indicates when the boiler needs cleaning. Easy-to-read control panel. 9 kw electrical output. The boiler is cleaned from a single hatch. Good for you back and knees! The practical burner hatch is easy to open. The burner is attached to the hatch and is easy to hinge to the side. Built-in copper-lined water heater with 100 litre capacity. Smooth, rounded pipes without hidden corners, making the boiler easy to clean. Cast iron hatches that will not warp. A tight seal throughout the service life of the boiler. Solid handles. The pellet burner is not included Biomax combining wood pellets and firewood IT'S UP TO YOU The Biomax uses tried and tested dual-fuel technology, but is designed to work with modern biofuels and to maximise convenience. The Biomax gives you the freedom to decide which fuel to use according to your preferences in terms of convenience and cost-effectiveness. The boiler works just as well with wood pellets and firewood. The separate combustion chambers make it easy to switch the energy source. It also works as an electric boiler with an output of 9 kw which is enough for most family homes. COMBINATION OF FUELS For example you could use firewood in the spring and autumn, and switch to wood pellets in the winter. In the summer, you can heat the water with wood pellets or electricity. You choose what works best for you. If you do not want to use firewood, wood pellets are still an economical option. FIREWOOD THE EASY WAY The firewood combustion chamber is designed for reverse combustion with ceramic grates and an afterburning chamber. The boiler takes around a minute to fire up using the supplied gas lighter. All cleaning is done from a single hatch at the front of the boiler. It couldn't be easier. WOOD PELLETS FOR CONVENIENCE The Viking Bio pellet burner can be permanently attached to the boiler. The boiler hatch has a quick-release handle and can be opened to move the burner out of the way. The removable ash bin at the bottom of the combustion chamber makes it easy to remove ash from the boiler. Ash bin for pellet burner. CERAMIC GRATES The Biomax is based on reverse combustion using the natural draught system when you use firewood as the fuel. Like all modern firewood boilers, the Biomax has ceramic grates. If you are using firewood, the boiler must be connected to one or more accumulator tanks equipped with a charging system (no accumulator tanks are needed if you are using wood pellets). This ensures that the environmental requirements are met while making it more convenient to use firewood. The emissions through the chimney are virtually negligible, consisting mainly of water vapour and carbon dioxide. Ceramic combustion chamber and afterburning chamber. BURNER HATCH The boiler is supplied with a hatch designed for a Värmebaronen Viking Bio pellet burner. Pellet hatch kits (not included) are available for other makes of burner. ENVIRONMENTAL APPROVAL The Biomax, with the Viking Bio pellet burner, has been tested by SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden, and achieved excellent results. It meets the requirements of the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning. 10 11

solar collectors and wood pellets Solar collector FROM EARLY SPRING TO LATE AUTUMN Modern solar collectors produce energy from the moment you start to feel the heat of the sun until well into the autumn. There are many benefits from combining the heat of the sun with wood pellets: Very low heating costs No environmental impact Free energy from the sun Less dependent on electricity Easy maintenance and high comfort Pellmax UB heat pump and wood pellets Heat pump, indoor component Heat pump, outdoor component ACCUMULATOR TANKS A WATER STORAGE SYSTEM Solar collectors must be connected to some kind of water storage system so that the heat of the sun can be stored. The volume required depends on the number of solar collectors. If the house needs no more than 2-4 solar collectors, the Värmebaronen Elomax 250/450 tank-in-tank boilers can be used. One or more accumulator tanks are needed if more solar collectors are installed. The tanks can be connected, COMBINING A HEAT PUMP WITH WOOD PELLETS Alongside the heavy rains and high temperatures that are expected in future, we are also bound to experience extreme cold over many winters. The small Pellmax UB pellet unit is a perfect partner for your heat pump when it is cold outside, when the pump loses some if its efficiency. WOOD PELLETS ARE BEST WHEN IT IS COLD When it is cold outside, the heat pump will eventually have to rely on an extra boost from expensive electric heating. By combining the pump with Pellmax UB, you can keep your heating costs low even when the cold sets in wood pellets are always cheap and effective regardless of the outside temperature. You can also extend the service life of your heat pump. OPTIMISE WITH SOLAR COLLECTORS Use wood pellets when it is really cold, use the heat pump when the temperature is milder, and use solar collectors in the summer. The system involves some initial outlay, but your heating will be very cheap and environmentally friendly. +10ºC 0ºC -10ºC SOLAR COLLECTORS HEAT PUMP storing several thousand litres of water. Värmebaronen supplies accumulator tanks and multifunctional tanks in a range of sizes. free hot water in summer ECONOMICAL WITH SOLAR COLLECTORS There are many advantages to linking solar collectors to a pellet system. You need to use fuel for a shorter part of the year, which can save you a lot of wood pellets. Even in the most northerly places, lots of energy is available from the sun. If you don't use vast amounts of hot water, solar collectors +10ºC 0ºC -10ºC SOLAR COLLECTORS PELLMAX UB EASY TO CONNECT TO THE HEAT PUMP It is easy to connect the Pellmax UB to the indoor component of the heat pump. Most heat pumps have a tank-in-tank component inside the house, with a volume of water that is enough for the Pellmax UB. Talk to Värmebaronen's heating consultants if you are unsure. PELLMAX UB are all you need the water is still heated on cloudy days. This means you can stop using the pellet boiler completely. It is very important to ask a professional to work out the number of solar collectors you need and the size of the accumulator tanks. If you contact Värmebaronen's heating consultants, they can help. 12 13

Wood pellet accessories Pelletsförråd 200 pellet store RSK 639 07 94 Flue pipe Biomax WHY DO I NEED A DRAUGHT HATCH? To obtain an even flow of air to the pellet burner, a draught regulator must always be installed. An even air flow creates higher combustion efficiency and greater fuel economy. It also prevents the boiler cooling down when it is not in use, because the air passes through the hatch rather than the entire boiler. Biomax and Pellmax are supplied with an angled flue pipe.
