Itasca County Soil and Water Conservation District Spring 2010 Native Tree and Plant Sale The Itasca County Soil and Water Conservation District (Itasca SWCD) is now taking orders for our spring 2010 eighth annual Native Tree and Plant Sale. The purpose of the sale is to provide landowners a source for smaller quantities of conservation grade trees, shrubs, wildflowers, and grasses. We only offer species native to Minnesota, and those which are well adapted to Itasca County growing conditions. Wildflower and Grass Seed Mixtures! Upland Mix: 27 species total, consisting of 23 species of Minnesota native wildflowers and 4 species of native showy grasses. There is a stronger component of the grass species, totaling 60% wildflowers and 40% grasses. The grasses make the mix well suited for conservation plantings, while the wildflowers provide accent color throughout the spring and summer. This mix is well suited for most upland sites, from moderately dry to moist. Wetland Mix: 31 species total consisting of 17 species of Minnesota native wildflowers and 14 species of native grasses, sedges and bulrushes. The seed count for this mix totals 12% wildflowers and 88% grasses, sedges and bulrushes. It is intended for wetland conservation projects, but the wildflowers provide scattered accent color throughout the spring and summer. This mix should be seeded in areas were the water table in near the soil surface at least in the spring and fall (ground is spongy and wet), such as wetlands and lake edges. *Seed mixes are sold in packages intended to cover 500 square feet in area. *Seeding instructions will be available at the time of order pick-up. Additional planting and seeding information will be available at the time of stock pick-up. Other General Information Plantskydd Deer Repellent: Plantskydd is a topical deer and repellent. It s a blood derivative and it triggers a predatory reaction in deer. This means that deer don t have to taste it to decide they don t like it; they simply smell it and stay clear. Further, even after the product wares off, it takes a while for the deer to want to come around again. Another benefit of a predatory reaction deer repellent is that you don t need to treat the entire plant; a little bit on the top of the plant is all you need. Fall and spring is when most browsing occurs, when green foliage isn t available, and winter snow isn t protecting dormant ground vegetation. Further, Plantskydd has proven effective for three to six months, so application isn t typically necessary more than twice a year. The pound of powder needs to be mixed with water and makes four quarts, and each quart of Plantskydd (pre-mix or concentrate) will treat 100 plants, one foot tall.
