FutureVU Pop-Up Events Fall 2017- Spring 2018
Completed Pop-Up Projects: Park(ing) Day September 15, 2017 Vanderbilt participated for the first time in this internationally recognized event in which parking spots in various cities and towns are transformed into pocket parks and parklets. From vision to reality 17 spaces and three weeks of planning turned into 1 park, which led to: Community engagement Green and sustainable Incorporating nature with trees and plants Unique water feature Ample seating Ice cream treats Awareness of FutureVU Interactive art to success 1 st Wow Factor 2 nd People s Choice 3 rd Text to Vote 2

Completed Pop-Up Projects: Pop-up Park on Kensington November 8-12, 2017 Pop-Up Park on Kensington The FutureVU team transformed Kensington Place, a popular street in the West End neighborhood, in order to help the community visualize how the area will change during upcoming beautification efforts. The park contained green space, numerous hammocks, tables and chairs, tents, and yard games. Programming included an outdoor yoga class sponsored by the Vanderbilt Rec Center, a football tailgate, and free cookies and hot chocolate. Completed Pop-Up Projects: Green Roof Day November 29, 2017 Green Roof Day An event organized by FutureVU and SEMO student workers where participants were challenged to visit the 5 green roofs located on campus and learn about their impact on sustainability. Each location offered an activity and information about green roofs. Those who visited all 5 received a free t-shirt and were entered in a drawing for prizes. Vanderbilt s Green Roofs: Kissam Courtyard Promotional Event Snapchat Filter Nursing Annex Lawn: A ground-level lawn centrally located above multiple floors of nursing classrooms Medical Center Courtyard: A main outdoor artery of VUMC, complete with benches and plantings Engineering & Science Building Roof: A large space on top of one of Vanderbilt s newest buildings this space has an excellent view and is perfect for hosting events Rand 1 st Wow Factor 2 nd People s Choice 3 rd Text to Vote Nursing Annex Lawn Warren & Moore Courtyard: A serene courtyard that sits atop a parking garage in the middle of two of Vanderbilt s residential College Halls Rand Dining Hall Roof: A brand new green roof comprised of 2 x2 boxes of plantings on the lower roof of the busy main dining hall 5
Completed Pop-Up Projects: Rand Seating Bombing December 2017 Rand Seating Bombing A stealth-mode event designed to gauge community reactions to multiple new pieces of furniture outside of a major student center. The FutureVU team placed tables, chairs, beanbags, and Adirondacks outside of a major student center for a week and solicited feedback to inform future decision-making. Harvard University Location This event drew inspiration from a similar pop-up created by Vice Chancellor Eric Kopstain when he was an administrator at Harvard University 6
Completed Pop-Up Projects: Spring Stealth Mode Series March 15 - May 1, 2018 Seating Bombing Series Furniture was placed on lawns, green spaces and patios that currently do not have seating over the course of 1.5 months to obtain feedback from the community on how to activate spaces in the future. Completed Pop-Up Projects: Pop-Up Park in Central Week of April 2-6, 2018 Pop-Up Park in Central The FutureVU team converted the Central Neighborhood into an interactive pop-up park. The park drew awareness to the vision for the Central Neighborhood in the future. The reimagined space included a temporary complete street, temporary amphitheater, a variety of seating, turf and landscape materials. Programming included a movie night, s mores food truck, rec center classes and a plant your own succulent activity. Before After 8
Completed Pop-Up Projects: Flower Bombing Late April 2018 Flower Bombing As part of the stealth mode series, flowers were placed in the shape of FutureVU on Library Lawn to add a pop of color to the space. 9
