Public Works Project Delivery Report May 2017 San Gabriel Public Works delivers reliable infrastructure & welcoming public spaces by designing, constructing, operating & maintaining the City s streets, parks, utilities, facilities & fleet. May 21-27 is National Public Works Week and May 25 th is San Gabriel Public Works Day! Since 1960, APWA has sponsored National Public Works Week. Across North America, agencies use this week to energize and educate the public on the importance of public works to their daily lives: planning, building, managing and operating at the heart of their local communities to improve everyday quality of life. The 2017 National Public Works Week Poster Theme is Public Works Connects Us celebrating the vital role public works plays in connecting us all together. Thank you to the City Council, City Staff and -- most of all to the citizens of San Gabriel for your support of Public Works. This newsletter highlights the projects and other notable activities currently underway in the Public Works Department to help build, repair and maintain the public infrastructure. PROJECTS IN CONSTRUCTION More than Ever, San Gabriel is Paving the Way to Great Streets As reported in the last Delivery Report, more miles of streets will be repaved in the coming year than have ever been paved at one time in recent history and possibly in the City s history. We will use communication tools and best construction practices to minimize inconvenience, but there will certainly be some impacts while these streets are rebuilt. Thank you for your patience!

Page 2 of 5 ACE Haul Route Restoration Now Serving Agostino Rd, Del Mar Ave and Mission Rd The restoration of pavement and associated work on more than 3.5 miles of City streets, including several major arterials is underway. Replacement of curb ramps along all of these streets is complete. Pavement repairs began on Agostino in early April and Del Mar Ave, Grand Avenue, Main Street, and Santa Fe Ave in May. We will share the full construction schedule once ACE has worked out some issues with their contractor. ACE and Public Works will share the information on an ongoing basis with Council and the public through changeable message signs, the weekly City Beat, the City s website, and social media. 2016-2017 CDBG Street Improvement Project This new project is funded by Federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds administered by the LA County Community Develoment Commission. The contract for construction was approved on April 18 th and construction is moving quickly. San Gabriel County Water District replaced an old water main below California Street south of Broadway last month in advance of the paving project. California Street (from I- 10 to Marshall and from Agostino Road to Broadway) and Pine Street (from Agostino Road to Broadway) will be repaved with new access ramps installed at intersection corners. The project will be completed in May.

Page 3 of 5 San Gabriel Blvd/Mission Road Intersection Improvements Council awarded a contract to Sequel Contractors, Inc. for street improvements, construction of a right turn lane on Mission Road, and traffic signal upgrades. The contractor began work in April 2017 and the project will be completed by the end of the summer. Marshall Community Park Construction was delayed by about one month due to the heavy rains this winter, but the soils have dried and work is now progressing normally. The site is graded, utility lines have been installed and the restroom/storage building is currently being constructed. The photo to the left shows the site as of May 18. Del Mar Avenue Pavement Rehabilitation Project Phase 3 (Saxon Avenue to Norwood Place) Council awarded the construction contract on April 18. Construction will begin in June. The project involves reconstructing the existing pavement, installing new curb ramps, and restriping of the roadway to include bike lanes. Work will be complete by the end of summer.

Page 4 of 5 PROJECTS IN DESIGN/PRE-CONSTRUCTION Vincent Lugo Park Fitness Equipment & Picnic Shelters The contract for picnic shelters was awarded in March. Construction of the three new picnic shelters funded by a grant from Los Angeles County will be complete this summer. The City also received a grant for adult fitness equipment to be placed in several areas of Lugo Park. A purchase order for installation has been issued and work will begin in June. The image to the right simulates the completed installation at the west end of the park. 2017 Great Streets Pavement Projects A Request for Proposals (RFP) for designing the 2017 and 2018 Great Streets Projects was issued last month and Engineering staff will bring a recommendation to hire a design consultant to City Council in June. The recommended streets and treatment methods that balance reconstruction with preventive maintenance will presented at that time. Del Mar Avenue Phase 2 (Bencamp Street to Chestnut Avenue) Design is underway for this project which involves the repaving of this segment of Del Mar Avenue and replacement/upgrade of the sanitary sewers below Del Mar Avenue. The design will be complete by the end of the year and construction will start in early 2018. Del Mar Avenue - Alhambra Wash Bridge Replacement This City project is funded primarily by the Federal bridge replacement program and is being designed by LA County Public Works. Design is complete, and Caltrans has issued the authorization for project construction. The project will be advertised in July 2017 with construction to begin in October. Due to restrictions on construction in the Alhambra Wash, construction will take two dry seasons to complete.

Page 5 of 5 Broadway/Walnut Grove Intersection Improvements Design of this federally-funded project is complete. Right-of-way appraisals and negotiations have taken longer than anticipated. A portion of the utility relocations for the project has been completed. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2018 and will be coordinated with the school calendar to minimize impacts. City Hall Renovations This project will improve customer service, efficiency and safety for several Departments in City Hall, including the City Clerk, Finance, and Human Resources Departments. Security features will be added to Finance, a desk for the new City Clerk Greeter position will be constructed, new customer service counters will be installed and the upstairs offices will be remodeled. Work has started in the City Clerk s office and the project is expected to be completed by this fall. In addition to the interior renovations, the exterior of City Hall will be repainted this summer. FOR MORE INFORMATION If you would like more information on any of these projects, please contact the Public Works Department at (626) 308-2825.
