CertainTeed is committed to resource conservation. Our roofing manufacturing facilities recycle close to 90 % of production waste into asphalt materials used for road construction. We also integrate recycled content into packaging materials like corrugated rolls and kraft paper. 250,000 CertainTeed diverts over tons/year of slag, stone granules, corrugated mixed paper and sludge from landfills by recycling this material into our products. In addition to reducing landfill waste, the use of recycled materials in our products reduces the release of CO2 that would result from the extraction and processing of virgin raw materials. CertainTeed also produces low and steep slope roofing products that help reduce energy costs and overall CO2 emissions. Our ENERGY STAR-rated Solaris shingle series achieves up to 40 % solar reflectance. In its journey from a nation of slightly more than 82 million people in 1904 to the current count of approximately 288 million residents, the United States has become one of the wealthiest nations in the world. To accommodate that growth and fuel the prosperity, America embarked on a building boom that persisted through the last 110 years. He establishes General Roofing Manufacturing Company and perfects smooth-roll and grit-surface asphalt roofing, and introduces individual asphalt roofing shingles. Manufacturing of individual asphalt shingles begins. 20 % of the asphalt roofing sold in North America is produced by General Roofing. General Roofing Manufacturing Company changes its name to PRODUCTS CORPORATION Total sales have reached $ 27 million. The WOODTEX heavyweight roofing shingle with a grain and texture that simulate real wood is developed. Roofing shingles that look like real wood becomes one of the company s defining strengths. Certain-teed is the world s largest manufacturer of asphalt shingles. During the next six years, management spends $ 4 million to improve existing manufacturing facilities. The War Department calls upon Certain-teed s expertise in consultant services, equipment procurement, installation inspection, and personnel training to support the war effort. Certain-teed intensifies its commitment to product innovation with the opening of a state-of-theart research and development facility in Paoli, Pennsylvania. Manufacturing advances continue, and in 1958 Certain-teed develops the first fully-automatic roofing shingle packaging machine. The B.F. Nelson (Roofing) Manufacturing Company is acquired, bringing the production of asphalt roofing and sales strength to the North Central region of the country. Certain-teed Products Corporation changes its name to Certain-teed Corporation. Saint-Gobain acquires 52% of the company stock. Production begins at the new Oxford, North Carolina, roofing plant.
