SECTION 40 75 21 Free/Available Chlorine Analysis System PART 1 General 1.01 SUMMARY A. Requirements for a digital sensor system for free chlorine measurement for disinfection purposes in drinking water, process water and industrial water treatment. The free chlorine concentration shall be determined according to the amperometric measuring principle that does not require the use of reagents. The sensor shall be used in conjunction with a flow assembly, ph probe and associated transmitter. Use of a flow assembly will ensure proper sensor operation through the control of flow across the sensor. An integral ph measurement will ensure the chlorine measurement is ph compensated, and for proper verification and calibration using a buffered DPD test. The sensor will incorporate Memosens digital technology for maximum process and data integrity with simple operation. The sensor shall be calibrated prior to leaving the producing factory with calibration data including the date and time of the calibration stored within the sensor, for immediate installation. B. Output options. 1.03 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Manufacturing facilities certified to the quality standards of ISO Standard 9001 - Quality Systems - Model for Quality Assurance in Design/Development, Production, Installation, and Servicing. 1

1.04 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Store all instruments in a dedicated structure with space conditioning to meet the recommended storage requirements provided by the Manufacturer. B. Any instruments that are not stored in strict conformance with the manufacturer s recommendation shall be replaced. 1.05 PROJECT OR SITE CONDITIONS A. Provide instruments suitable for the installed site conditions including, but not limited to, material compatibility, site altitude, process and ambient temperature, and humidity conditions. 1.06 CALIBRATION AND WARRANTY A. Sensors shall arrive pre-calibrated and ready for installation. The sensor shall be factory calibrated for free chlorine. Calibration information is to be stored in the sensor for automatic download to the transmitter, once connected. B. The sensor shall support and store the calibration using a reference in the lab or at the sensor installation point. C. The manufacturer s warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, damage to the sensor due to improper storage or handling, or any other mode of failure or reduced sensor life that is not a direct consequence of a manufacturing defect. D. The sensor and transmitter system shall have standard one year warranty from date of shipment and if the meter is commissioned by a factory certified technician, the warranty is extended to three years from the date of shipment. 1.07 MAINTENANCE A. Provide all parts necessary for maintenance and calibration purposes throughout the warranty period. Deliver all of these supplies before project substantial completion. B. The delivered sensor shall include a bottle of electrolyte and a replacement membrane cartridge with pre-tensioned membrane. C. The sensor shall require checking and verification at least once per month, with cleaning when required refilling of the internal electrolyte every 12 months. D. A membrane cap replacement kit shall be available that includes replacement electrolyte. 1.08 LIFE CYCLE MANAGEMENT A. Instrument documentation, like original calibration certificates, manuals and product status information shall be accessed via a web enabled system with a license. The instrument-specific information shall be accessed via its serial number. When services 2

PART 2 are provided by an authorized service provider the services information like subsequent field calibrations shall be archived and accessible via this web enabled system. Products 2.01 SYSTEMS/ASSEMBLIES A. Manufacturer 1. Endress+Hauser Chloromax CCS142D with Liquiline CM44x or CM44xR transmitter. B. Performance Criteria (Sensor) 1. Measured variable: Free Chlorine via hypochlorous acid (HOC l) concentration. 2. Chlorine ranges: 0.05 to 20 mg/l CL 2 (25 C (77 F), ph 7.2), or 0.01 to 5 mg/l CL 2 (25 C (77 F), ph 7.2). 3. Measurement error: 1% of measured value. 4. Reference operating conditions: 25 C (77 F) and ph 7.2. 5. Response time: t 90 < 2 min. 6. Measurement resolution: 5 µg/l or 15 µg/l Cl2, sensor dependent. 7. Repeatability: ±1%. 8. Drift: <1.5% per month. C. Certifications 1. Non-hazardous area. D. Environment 1. Storage temperature: a. With electrolyte: 5 to 50 C (41 F to 122 F) b. Without electrolyte: -20 to 60 C (-4 F to 140 F) 2. Minimum flow: 30 l/hour. 3. Ingress protection: IP68 (test conditions 10 m (33 ft) water column at 25 C (77 F) over 45 days, 1 mol/l KCL). 2.02 MANUFACTURED UNITS A. Transmitter 1. Shall be a multi-parameter controller with up to eight measuring channels based on digital Memosens technology. 2. Programmed computations and features resident in nonvolatile memory. 3. Transmitter firmware shall be upgradable in the field by the user or a factory technician, without removing the transmitter from service. 3

4. Transmitter shall be available in a Nema 4X field housing with integral display or a DIN rail-mount version for cabinet mounting with remote display. 5. Digital communications provides for plug and play for all sensor configurations. 6. Shall be capable of modification for new or extended functions by use of modular components that are easily retrofitted in the field without the aid of tools, and without the need to power down the transmitter or re-boot the system. 7. Simple wiring for all types of digital Memosens sensors plus an option for a M12 sensor connector. 8. Digital communications protocols available shall include the following without using an external converter. Digital communication shall be available as a native output from the sampler. Use of an external third-party signal converter is not acceptable. a. 4-20mA, HART. b. Profibus RS485 with webserver. c. Modbus RS485 with webserver. d. Modbus TCP with webserver. e. EtherNet/IP with webserver. 1) EtherNet/IP communication shall be supported with the Electronic Data Sheet (EDS) file available for download directly from the sampler. The Add-On Profile (AOP) for integration shall be a Level 3 profile to simplify control system integration. 2) The EtherNet/IP communications shall also be supported with Add-on Instructions (AOI) files and pre-configured faceplates for ease of control system integration. 9. Transmitter shall have an option for relay outputs, analog inputs, and discrete input/outputs. 10. Option for integral web-server for remote operation, diagnostics and configuration. B. Sensor 1. The sensor system shall be a microprocessor-based, continuous-reading, instrument. Each system shall consist of a chlorine sensor, ph probe, flow assembly and associated transmitter. 2. The measurement shall be based on an amperometric method. The membranecovered sensor shall consist of a cathode (working electrode) and an anode (counter electrode) in an electrolyte which is separated from the medium by the membrane. The membrane shall prevent the electrolyte from leaking and protects against contamination of the sensor. 3. Hypochlorous acid (HOCL) contained in the medium diffuses through the sensor membrane and is reduced to chloride ions (Cl-) on the gold cathode. The electron 4

2.03 ACCESSORIES release of the gold cathode and electron acceptance on the silver anode result in a current flow which is proportional to the free chlorine concentration in the medium under constant conditions. 4. The sensor shall calibrated by determining the free chlorine based on the DPD method (photometric method). The calibration value determined will be entered in the transmitter. 5. The sensor shall utilize Memosens technology for plug and play operation and having all characteristics and calibration values stored in the sensor. 6. The chlorine sensor and ph probe will be mounted together in a flow assembly, used to regulate the flow and maintain a consistent measurement state for both chlorine and ph measurement. A. Panel configuration 1. A panel system for flow cell and sensor mounting shall be available with all components pre-mounted and ready for installation in a sample stream. B. Membrane kit 1. A membrane replacement kit shall be available to include replacement membranes and electrolyte for routine servicing. 2.04 SOURCE QUALITY CONTROL & CALIBRATION A. Any standards and electrolyte solutions will be supplied with MSDS data sheets. 2.05 SAFETY PART 3 A. All electrical equipment shall meet the requirements of ANSI/NFPA 70, National Electric Code latest addition. B. All devices shall be suitable for operation in a non-hazardous area. C. Device failure modes, self-monitoring characteristics and diagnosis shall follow NAMUR standard NE 43. Execution 3.01 EXAMINATION A. Examine the complete set of plans, the process fluids, pressures, and temperatures and furnish instruments that are compatible with installed process condition. B. Examine the installation location for the instrument and verify that the instrument will work properly when installed. 3.02 INSTALLATION A. Contractor will install the transmitter and sensor in strict accordance with the manufacturer s instructions and recommendation. 5

B. The sensor must be mounted using a suitable flow assembly so that the sensor is properly immersed in the solution to be measured, and the flow rate is properly controlled. C. The standard one-year warranty against manufacturing defects shall be extendable to three-years on covered equipment if paid start-up service is accomplished on that covered equipment by an authorized service provider. D. Coordinate the installation with all trades to ensure that the mechanical system has all necessary appurtenances for proper installation of instruments. 1. General contractor 2. Each instrument shall be tested before commissioning and the ENGINEER shall witness the interface capability in the PLC control system and associated registers. 1. Each instrument shall provide direct programming capability through the PLC 2. Each instrument shall be supported with a device profile permitting direct integration in the PLC. B. The ENGINEER shall witness all instrument verifications in the field. C. Manufacturers Field Services are available for start-up and commissioning by a manufacturer authorized service provider the warranty against manufacturing defects is three years. 3.05 ADJUSTING 1. Manufacturer field service representative shall verify installation of all installed sensors, cables and transmitters. 2. Manufacturer representative shall notify the ENGINEER in writing of any problems or discrepancies and proposed solutions. 3. Manufacturer representative shall generate a configuration report for each senor installation following commissioning. A. Verify factory calibration of all instruments in accordance with the Manufacturer s instructions. 3.05 PROTECTION A. All instruments shall be fully protected after installation and before commissioning. Replace any instruments damaged before commissioning. 6
