Revision: 8/8/16 Title & Garden Greetings! Kindergartners embark upon an exploratory adventure in the school garden. This lesson provides students with the opportunity to develop their observational skills while orienting them to the school garden and teaching them how to safely use garden tools and plant seedlings. Next Generation Science Standard: K-ESS3 Earth and Human Activity Education Science & Engineering Practices: Asking Questions and Defining Problems --Ask questions based on observations to find more information about the designed world. Trees 60 Minutes Fall From: 9/13/16 Through: 12/16/16 Requirement: Access to school gardens necessary. Requires an area for digging practice, and an area to plant. 2-3 Garden Needed ETS1.A: Defining and Delimiting an Engineering Problem --Asking questions, making observations, and gathering information are helpful in thinking about problems. --Influence of Engineering, Technology, and Science on Society and the Natural World --People depend on various technologies in their lives; human life would be very different without technology

Title & It s Autumn! Students taste several kinds of winter squash and describe each squash s color, shape, taste, and texture. Students also make their own butter in jars in this fall-themed lesson. Common Core Content for Mathematics: K.MD 1 Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measureable attributes of a single object. Trees One session, 60 minutes Fall From: 9/13/16 Through: 12/16/16 2-3 garden parents needed K.MD 2 Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has more of / less of the attribute, and describe the difference. ELA/Literacy SL.K.5 Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as desired to provide additional detail

Title & Area of Leaves: Children are introduced to the idea of surface area and practice this abstract concept by measuring the area of a leaf with nonstandard units, such as beans, buttons, or bottle caps Common Core Content for Mathematics: K.MD 1 Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measureable attributes of a single object. Trees One session, 45 minutes Fall From: 9/13/16 Through: 12/16/16 2-3 garden parent needed K.MD 2 Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has more of / less of the attribute, and describe the difference. K.G 4 Analyze and compare twoand three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts and other attributes. K.G 5 Model shapes in the world by building shapes from components and drawing shapes.

Title & Incredible Edibles: Students learn about how a garden grows, identify different parts of a plant and are introduced to edible plant parts. Next Generation Science Standard: K-LS1-1 Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive. Education: Science & Engineering Practices Analyzing and Interpreting Data Trees 60 Minutes Winter From: 1/3/17 Through: 3/31/17 Both Indoors and 2 Garden Needed LS1.C: Organization for Matter and Energy Flow in Organisms Patterns

Title & No. of Garden Soil Exploration: Students investigate the contents of soil and classifying what they find as either "Alive", "Once Alive" or "Not Alive". They also explore and sift soil, sand, and rocks. Next Generation Science Standard: K-LS1-1 Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive. Education: Science & Engineering Practices Analyzing and Interpreting Data LS1.C: Organization for Matter and Energy Flow in Organisms Patterns Trees 60 Minutes Spring Date-Range From: 4/10/17 Through: 6/1/17 Requirement: This lesson requires an area in which children can dig, which Living Classroom staff will prepare ahead of time. Access to school garden needed either Kindergarten garden, main school gardens or both. 2-3 garden parents

Title & No. of Garden Garden of Senses: Students increase their awareness of their environment by looking for plants and natural objects of a particular color, texture and scent. Next Generation Science Standard: K-ESS3 Earth and Human Activity Education Science & Engineering Practices Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information --Read grade-appropriate texts and/or use media to obtain scientific information to describe patterns in the natural world. --Communicate solutions with others in oral and/or written forms using models and/or drawings that provide detail about scientific ideas. 45 Minutes Spring Date-Range From: 4/10/17 Through: 6/1/17 2-3 garden parents ETS1.B: Developing Possible Solutions --Designs can be conveyed through sketches, drawings, or physical models. These representations are useful in communicating ideas for a problem s solution to other people. --Interdependence of Science, Engineering, and Technology People encounter questions about the natural world every day
