Measuring for BLINDS AND SHADES & DRAPERY, PANELS, VALANCES AND CORNICES

OVERVIEW AND MOUNTING OPTIONS Our measuring guide will take you through the steps you need to measure your windows. Just a few simple measurements are all you ll need and if you d like some help, or have questions, we are always here to help. TOOLS YOU WILL NEED: Metal Tape Measure Step Ladder Pen/Pencil Measure Sheet (included) MOULDING/TRIM MOULDING/TRIM LATCH/LOCK FRICTION HINGE JAMB LOCKING HANDLE SILL WINDOW STAY MULLION SILL CONSIDERATIONS The type of window you have, and how it looks, will help you determine what style of window covering will work best. If your window opens inward and/or has parts protruding, such as a locking handle. If you have mullions, moulding/trim and/or window sills on each window. This information will help you make the correct decisions for your order. MOUNTING OPTIONS To better understand your mounting options, start with two measurements. Round down to the nearest 1 8. 1. MOUNT INSIDE WINDOW FRAME Available when your window depth meets the minimum requirements for your desired product, and your window is square. 2. MOUNT OUTSIDE WINDOW FRAME Use if your window is not square, or has obstacles such as handles or cranks. It s a great option for room darkening and when inside mounting isn t an option. Also works well when you want your window to appear larger. SQUARENESS To check for squareness, measure diagonals as shown. If the measurements differ by over 1 2, your window is not square. WINDOW DEPTH Make sure you consider any obstacles such as cranks, handles, and window opening direction. smithandnoble.com 2

FOR INSIDE MOUNT BLINDS & SHADES Measure every window, even if they appear identical. Use a metal tape measure to ensure accuracy Round to the nearest 1 8. Write all measurements on the measurement sheets provided. 1. MEASURE LEFT TO RIGHT (1, 2 & 3) Measure the window opening inside the frame from left to right, in three places as shown, to determine width. Round down to the nearest 1 8. When ordering Roller/Solar Shades, Sheer Shadings or Vertical Blinds, use the top measurement y for width. When ordering all other products, use the smallest measurement of the three taken for the width. This will be your ordering width. 2. MEASURE TOP TO BOTTOM (4, 5 & 6) Measure the window opening from top to bottom in three places as shown to determine height. For the height, use the largest measurement of the three taken. Round up to the nearest 1 8. This will be your ordering height. 3. WRITE these measurements on the measure sheet at the end of this guide. CONSIDERATIONS MINIMUM DEPTH REQUIRED FLUSH MOUNT LIGHT GAPS Inside Mounted treatments require a minimum depth to be mounted. You will need this much unobstructed depth, including any handles, locks, etc., to Inside Mount a treatment. The charts on page 4 show you the minimum obstruction depth required for each treatment. For the face of your treatment to be flush with the wall/trim, your frame depth must be the same or greater than the Flush Mount depth indicated on the chart on pg 4. A small deduction in the width and/or length will be taken by the factory to allow for correct operation. This will cause small light gaps on each side of the treatment. Give us your exact window dimensions to ensure your treatment operates properly. Do Not Adjust Your Measurements. 2-ON-1 HEADRAIL Combine two treatments on one headrail for maximum light control. They can be raised independently, yet convey a uniform, streamlined appearance. If you have a mullion, consider placing the split where the mullion is located. NOTE: For Wood Blinds ordered as 2 or more blinds with 1 valance, add the width of the moulding or mullion, if any, to the custom valance length, or the valance will be too narrow. CORDED CONTROL STACKING You have the option to place the control (lift/tilt) on the right or left side. Pick the side that is easiest to reach. When your blinds or shades are fully raised, the stack will be gathered at the top of your window, obscuring your view. (See Product Stacking Charts on pgs 11-12) You cannot avoid this obstruction. If you want to retain all of your view, use outside mount and order your treatment to stack above the window opening. FOR OUTSIDE MOUNT BLINDS & SHADES Measure every window, even if they appear identical. Use a metal tape measure to ensure accuracy. Round down to the nearest 1 8. Write all measurements on the measurement sheets provided. 1. MEASURE WIDTH Measure the outside width of the area you wish to cover. This will be your ordering width. 2. MEASURE HEIGHT Measure the height of the area you wish to cover. This is your ordering height. 3. WRITE these measurements on the measure sheet at the end of this guide. RECOMMENDED OVERLAP PRODUCT OVERLAP WIDTH OVERLAP HEIGHT Horizontal Blinds & Shades 3 (1 1 2 each side) 2 top, 1 1 2 bottom Roller Shades 3 (1 1 2 each side) 2 top, 1 1 2 bottom Horizontal Sheer Shadings 6 (3 each side) 3 top, 1 1 2 bottom CONSIDERATIONS Roller Shades, Solar Shades and Sheer Shadings will be made to the exact size you specify. Fabrics willl be approx. 1 narrower than ordered width. CLEARANCE DEPTH When mounting over another window treatment, order clearance depth at least 1 greater than the depth of the existing treatment. (See chart on pg 4) Consider using either spacer blocks or extension brackets. SPACER BLOCKS - Adds 3 8. For outside mount, beyond trim/moulding. By adding spacer blocks or extension brackets, the possibility of light leakage around the edges increases. Adding drapery panels will reduce this. EXTENSION BRACKETS - Will add additional clearance, varies by product. Go online or call for more information. WINDOW SILL If you have a protruding window sill, consider having your shade/blind end on top of it. 2-ON-1 HEADRAIL CORDED CONTROL SHADE STACKING HEIGHT Combine two treatments on one headrail for maximum light control. They can be raised independently, yet convey a uniform, streamlined appearance. If you have a mullion, consider placing the split where the mullion is located. FOR SPECIAL APPLICATIONS DOORS & FRENCH DOORS When ordering blinds or shades for doors, order them as outside mount. MEASURE 1 PAST GLASS/MOULDING W MEASURE 2-3 ABOVE GLASS W H H MEASURE 2-3 BELOW GLASS FRENCH DOORS DOOR CONSIDERATIONS OBSTRUCTIONS & STACKING WIDTH HEIGHT When your shade is fully open, the stack will be gathered at the side of your window or door, obscuring your view. What side do you open frequently? Place stacking on the opposite side. To stack off your window or door, use Stacking Chart to determine how much to add to your ordering width. (See Product Stacking Charts on pg 11-12) We recommend that you measure 1 past the glass/moulding on doors to account for any obstructions (such as handles). Certain products will fit between the glass and handle, such as Roller/Solar and Honeycombs. Call us if you need more information. Add 2-3 above the glass/moulding. HOLD DOWN BRACKETS Hold down brackets are used to keep the shade/blind in place when lowered. We recommend these for doors that are opened and closed frequently. METAL DOORS OR KICKPLATES If your door is metal, or has a kickplate at the bottom, you will need to pre-drill and use metal screws when you install your product. HEADRAIL/VALANCE/ CASSETTE SIZE Depending on the treatment you choose, the headrail, cassette or valance may hit the wall when the door is opened. If this is a concern, consider products with narrow flush mount depth. (See Product Depth Charts on pg 4) CORDED CONTROL You have an option to place the control on either the left or right side. 1/8" 3/8" 5/8" 7/8" 1/4" 1/2" 3/4" smithandnoble.com 7

Drapery, Panels, Valances & Cornices FOR INSIDE AND OUTSIDE MOUNT TREATMENTS Select Inside or Outside Mount Measuring Considerations for any Window Treatment INSIDE MOUNT Inside mounted shades are contained within your window frame. Many people prefer an inside mount because it provides a finished, built-in look without covering the window molding; it is also suggested for the 1st layer of a layered window treatment. OUTSIDE MOUNT Outside mounted blinds or shades are mounted on your wall or molding. They are often used to make a window appear larger or to hide a less-than-attractive window, when windows are not square, or when there is not sufficient frame depth for inside mounting. CONSIDERATIONS IN CHOOSING INSIDE MOUNT VS. OUTSIDE MOUNT FRAME DEPTH SURFACE ABOVE WINDOW SQUARENESS Inside Mount requires adequate mounting depth within your frame. At least 2" is enough for most treatments. If your frame isn t deep enough for the style you ve chosen, you should use Outside Mount. See chart for Product Depth on Measuring Worksheet. OBSTACLES Check for any obstacles on your window, such as handles or cranks, that could interfere with your treatment s operation with an Inside Mount. If there are such obstacles, you should consider Outside Mount. SQUARENESS For Inside Mount your window should be square, otherwise your treatment may not work properly or hang attractively. To check for squareness measure diagonally in both directions. If measurements differ by over 1 2", you should use Outside Mount. Outside Mount requires at least 2" of flat surface above your window or on the window frame for mounting brackets. See chart for Recommended Overlap below. Using a metal tape, measure the area you want to cover, including any overlap on the surrounding wall. Remember you must have at least 2" of flat surface above the window opening to allow space for mounting brackets. When you specify Outside Mount (except for Roller or Solar Shades, or Illusions Shadings) your treatment will be made to the exact size you specify (excluding trim). Roller, Solar and Illusions fabrics will be approximately. 1" narrower than ordered. You can also order the treatment wider to avoid light gaps. Also specify any extension brackets needed to clear handles, cranks, etc. as one of your No Charge Options. PRODUCT DEPTH FLUSH NOT FLUSH Product depth includes allowing enough adequate window depth, unobstructed depth and flush or non-flush allowance for your window treatments. MINIMUM DEPTH You ll need this much unobstructed depth, including any handles, locks, etc., to Inside Mount that treatment. FLUSH MOUNT For the face of your treatment to be flush with the wall, make sure your frame depth is the same or greater than the Flush Mount depth indicated on the chart. If You Have Selected: INSIDE MOUNT STEP 1: Measure the inside width at 3 locations, top, middle and bottom. Record the smallest of the 3 measurements. This is your ordering width. We make the necessary deductions (approximately 1/2"). STEP 2: Measure the height at 3 locations, left, middle and right side. Record the longest of the 3 measurements. This is your ordering height. PLEASE NOTE: When measuring for an inside mount, do not add to the size of your product for a tighter fit. It will not fit properly in your window. Measuring & Order Guide If You Have Selected: OUTSIDE MOUNT STEP 1: Measure the outside width of the area you wish to cover. If space allows we recommend adding overlap to reduce light, see Recommended Overlap Chart below. This is your ordering width. STEP 2: Measure the height of the area you wish to cover. This is your ordering height. RECOMMENDED OVERLAP Overlap Width, Product Outside Mount Overlap Height, Outside Mount Drapery & Panels 12" (6" ea. side) 4" top; 4" below sill, or 1 2" above floor Valances & Cornices 2" (1" ea. side) 2" top Need assistance? Drapery, Panels, Valances & Cornices FOR DRAPERY AND PANELS YOU MAY ORDER DRAPERY AS SINGLE PANELS OR IN PAIRS SINGLE PANEL One individual panel Choose Left, Right or Center panel LEFT CENTER RIGHT PAIR OF DRAPERY Two equal panels (1 right, 1 left) When ordering a pair of drapery the width you specify will be divided into 2 equal panels totaling your overall width. PAIR Example: Width ordered at 100" as a pair. You will receive two 50" panels. FOR PANELS AND DRAPERY TOTAL WIDTH Measure the width you wish to cover: all styles come with fullness built in, so order exact width needed. If space allows, we recommend adding 6" to 12" on each side, beyond window edges: this makes windows look larger and allows fabric to stack clear of windows when drapes are fully open. TOTAL HEIGHT Finished height is measured from top to bottom, including tabs, or rod pockets (Tie Top measured from top of panel to bottom of panel). These styles are normally ordered to be installed 4" above the window or near the ceiling (be sure to add these extra inches to your final measurements to ensure the correct height). All Drapery styles can be ordered as Drapery Valances up to 20" in length. All rings & hardware are sold separately. DOUBLE LAYER TREATMENTS To mount two panels over one window (e.g. a sheer behind an opaque fabric), indicate which will be the back (closer to the window) and which will be the front treatment. Use identical measurements (small deductions will be taken on back treatment) and specify double rod hardware. PLEASE NOTE: Fabrics made with natural fibers may experience slight changes due to variables in the environment such as humidity, temperature and moisture. This is to be considered normal. If this is a concern, consider ordering a length that includes a small puddle. Drapery, Panels, Valances & Cornices FOR HARDWARE FOR HARDWARE The rod width you specify on your order does not include the width of the finials on each end. Finials add 1 2" to 9 1 2" on each end, depending upon the style. Hardware is usually ordered same size as drapery. For exact finial widths by style, call Customer Service. HEIGHT SUGGESTIONS FOR PANELS AND DRAPERIES 1 VALANCE For panel styles that will be used as a top treatment or valance, we recommend approximately 10-20" for length. 2 SILL LENGTH A great choice for a window in a recess or above furniture, or for one that is opened frequently. 1 3 APRON LENGTH For ideal proportions, this look should fall about 4" below sill. 4 CAFÉ LENGTH Panels usually measure 1 2" of the window length. These styles are especially useful for kitchens, allowing both natural light and privacy. Best hardware for these are Petite Rods (less than 1" in dia.) for smaller size windows or Medium Rods (1" in dia) for bigger windows. 4 23 5 FLOOR LENGTH Treatments that will be opened and closed regularly should fall about 1 2" above the floor or carpeting so they skim that surface. We recommend using traversing hardware. 7 6 5 6 SLIGHT BREAK Add 1-6" of length for a thoughtfully-finished, designer look. 7 EXTRA LONG PUDDLE LENGTH Add another 6-10" of length, which is to be arranged in poufs on the floor (not recommended for windows in high traffic areas).
