Solutions for commercial and domestic applications Solutions for domestic & commercial applications Standard heating systems How fan convectors work Smith s fan and flame-effect fan convectors work efficiently and effectively with all types of wet central heating systems, including gas, oil, electric, biomass or LPG boilers. They also require an electrical connection to run the fan. Hot water from the central heating system passes through the heat exchanger, transferring its heat to the aluminium fins. Cooler air is drawn in by the fan and heated as it passes over the heat exchanger, before being expelled gently back into the room. This gives a more even temperature spread and heats rooms in much less time than a traditional panel radiator. Each Smith s fan convector includes a low temperature cut-out system, preventing the product from operating until the system water temperature reaches a pre-set level. Electric versions connect to a standard electrical system via a fused spur. Fan convectors use either AC or EC motor technology to drive the fan. AC motors typically provides the end user with a number of fixed speeds whilst EC technology offers infinite control over the fan speed and heat output. At home with Smith s fan convectors For a trained heating engineer, installing our fan convectors is simple because they use the same pipe work, fitting procedures and heat loss calculations as radiators. We also provide installation guides for all our products via our website. With the heat output switch left on either normal or boost position, they will come on and off automatically with the central heating system. Each model includes a low temperature cut-out, which prevents the product operating until the water temperature reaches a pre-set temperature. They can be used alone or paired with radiators and can be sited almost anywhere to suit the size and style of the building. Place them low on walls, above doorways or high up on other walls for safety or space considerations. Our renowned Space Saver is designed to be sited in a plinth under a kitchen base unit to create more storage space, worktop surface area or room for additional white goods. For those concerned about running costs, fan convectors use a very small amount of electricity to run the fan and/or bulb (flameeffect fan convectors only). Based on an annual usage of 1300 hours with electricity charged at 15p per kwh, we calculate electricity costs to be less than 5 per year for a fan convector and less than 10 per year for flame-effect fan convectors. Natural Convectors (Perimeter Heating) Requiring connection to a wet central heating system, hot water passes through the heat exchanger, transferring its heat to the aluminium fins. The natural movement of air gently circulates over the heat exchanger, is warmed and evenly distributed around the room. 4 A typical central heating system combining condensing boiler, radiator, two EcoPowerad fan convectors and a Space Saver plinth heater. www.smithsep.co.uk

Low temperature heating systems Working with heat pumps Renewable technology grows apace, with ground and air source heat pumps beginning to become a viable alternative to boilers as the principal heat generator in homes around the UK. Inherent in the heat pump s design is that the smaller the temperature difference between the heat source pump (air or ground) and the heat sink/emitter (under-floor heating, fan convector, radiator), the higher the energy efficiency of that heat pump. This higher efficiency means lower fuel bills and greater carbon savings for that home. Fan convectors can work very effectively at system temperatures as low as 40 C. This allows your chosen heat pump to work close to its maximum levels of efficiency, which means it will reduce the user s energy costs and energy consumption in the way that it was intended. By contrast, a standard radiator is designed to be efficient at higher temperatures, 45 C and above, which automatically reduces the heat pump s efficiency by more than 10%. In addition the size of the radiator has to be increased significantly to cope with the lower system temperatures. Solutions for commercial and domestic applications Comparable fan convector v radiator on a low temperature system Height Width Depth Weight Fan convector 400mm 1210mm 95mm 14kg Radiator 600mm 1800mm 180mm 63kg SAP* calculation comparison An example SAP calculation shows that using a combination of an air source heat pump with a fan convector in a new build or existing property, should show a reduction of at least 12% in running costs (and carbon usage) when compared with a radiator and air source heat pump, and that using a fan convector in this way achieves close to the efficiencies obtained by installing underfloor heating. *The Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) is the UK Government's recommended method system for measuring the energy rating of residential dwellings. 5 www.smithsep.co.uk

3. Flame-effect fan convectors 3. Flame-effect fan convectors How Hydroflame works Hot water from the central heating system passes through a heat exchanger and transfers its heat to the aluminium fins. Warm air Cooler air is drawn in at floor level and used to create the flame-effect. The air is heated as it passes over the heat exchanger, a patented process that creates a realistic flameeffect, and then expelled gently back into the room. Heat exchanger This gives a more even temperature and will heat a room in much less time than a traditional panel radiator. Plumbed into central heating system The fan will not come into operation until the central heating system water passing through the heat exchanger reaches 40 C (or the temperature set by the installer). This ensures that cooler air is not circulated at start up and allows Hydroflame to switch on and off automatically in conjunction with the central heating system. Flame-effect Coals Lamp Flame-effect fan convectors are energy efficient and in the home will add less than 10.00* to your annual heating bill. Dual models include an electric heating element ideal in spring and summer when you may need a quick warm up but the central heating system is switched off. Cool air Note: *based on electricity charged at 15p/kWh. Features & benefits Completely safe Hydroflame is safe because it uses water from the central heating system to produce heat. No independent gas supply needed No flue gases are produced so a flue and CO detector are not required No live flames, hot coals or elements Low surface temperatures Minimal running costs Hydroflame has a unique method of operation that brings significant savings on running costs. Operates as part of the central heating system, where average usage on normal heat output will add less than 10.00 a year to annual heating bills (excluding any separate use of the electric heating element on Dual models). See table of running costs. Environmentally friendly Hidden fixings for extra security Hydroflame has less of an impact on the environment than electric, gas or open fire alternatives. No minimum room size No harmful gases expelled to the atmosphere A beautiful focal feature in the room Automatic response to water temperature, providing the correct amount of heat when needed No special ventilation required Stylish and attractive appearance characterises Hydroflame s innovative design. Fit on any internal or external wall surface, into a fireplace opening, or in front of a fireplace surround Thermostatically controlled Can be used simply to replace an existing panel radiator Energy saving light bulb Can show a comforting flame-effect with or without the heating being switched on Simple controls Operating Hydroflame could not be simpler. For full installation instructions refer to the Hydroflame Installation & User Guide, which is available on request; or download it from www.smiths-env.com Low maintenance Cost effective and convenient. No need for annual servicing or safety checks so no access to the property is required Easy to change the lamp Easy for homeowner to clean the filter system Very low water content Each Hydroflame has a very low water content of 0.36 litres, around 5% of the water content of an equivalent output steel panel radiator. Slower fan speed for flame-effect only reduces energy consumption Easy to install Hydroflame is economical and straightforward to install No gas supply or flue required fix to any wall, internal and external Hydroflame running costs (s fitted with 11W energy-saving long-life bulb) Annual Usage (Hours) Running Costs ( ) 11W Bulb 29W Fan Annual Total Clearly labelled, easy action rocker switches No chimney or flue liners required 1100 1.82 4.79 Easy to use by elderly or infirm people Inset models fit standard fireplace openings no need for a replacement surround 1300 2.15 5.65 7.80 1700 2.81 7.39 10.20 2500 4.13 10.87 15.00 Flexible hoses, isolation valves and pre-wired electric cable supplied as standard Connects to standard central heating pipe work 40 6.60 Assumptions Electricity charged at 15p per kwh. And, as its name implies, this brings considerable space saving benefits - more room for extra storage units, more work surfaces, more space for kitchen appliances. Space Saver is used predominantly for domestic applications where the ingenious plinthmounting feature makes it ideal for heating kitchens and utility rooms. Plinth mounting also makes Space Saver ideal for certain non-domestic applications such as reception areas, changing rooms, libraries, etc. Before After Heat Output at 80ºC Heat Output at 75ºC Heat Output at 70ºC Heat Output at 65ºC Room Size Normal Boost Normal Boost Normal Boost Normal Boost Guide* (m 3 ) kw (Btu/h) kw (Btu/h) kw (Btu/h) kw (Btu/h) kw (Btu/h) kw (Btu/h) kw (Btu/h) kw (Btu/h) SS80 24 0.8 (2900) 1.1 (3600) 0.8 (2700) 0.9 (3200) 0.7 (2500) 0.8 (2800) 0.6 (2200) 0.7 (2500) SS3 (Improved heat output) 31 1.1 (3800) 1.4 (4800) 1.0 (3400) 1.3 (4400) 0.9 (3100) 1.2 (4100) 0.8 (2700) 1.1 (3800) SS5 37 1.3 (4400) 1.7 (5800) 1.2 (4100) 1.6 (5500) 1.1 (3800) 1.4 (4700) 1.0 (3400) 1.3 (4400) SS7 46 1.6 (5500) 1.9 (6500) 1.4 (4800) 1.8 (6100) 1.3 (4400) 1.6 (5500) 1.2 (4100) 1.5 (5000) SS9 63 2.2 (7500) 2.4 (8200) 2.1 (7000) 2.2 (7500) 1.8 (6300) 2.0 (6900) 1.7 (5900) 1.8 (6300) Low Voltage SS5 12V 33 1.3 (4400) 1.7 (5800) 1.2 (4100) 1.6 (5500) 1.1 (3800 1.4 (4700) 1.0 (3400) 1.3 (4400) /Electric (Dual) SS5 Dual 37 1.3 (4400) 1.7 (5800) 1.2 (4100) 1.6 (5500) 1.1 (3800 1.4 (4700) 1.0 (3400) 1.3 (4400) 29 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 Heat Output at 60ºC Heat Output at 55ºC Heat Output at 50ºC Heat Output at 45ºC Room Size Normal Boost Normal Boost Normal Boost Normal Boost Guide* (m 3 ) kw (Btu/h) kw (Btu/h) kw (Btu/h) kw (Btu/h) kw (Btu/h) kw (Btu/h) kw (Btu/h) kw (Btu/h) SS80 24 0.6 (1900) 0.7 (2300) 0.5 (1700) 0.6 (2000) 0.4 (1400) 0.5 (1700) 0.35 (1200) 0.4 (1400) SS3 (Improved heat output) 31 0.7 (2400) 1.0 (3400) 0.6 (2000) 0.9 (3100) 0.5 (1700) 0.8 (2700) 0.4 (1400) 0.7 (2400) SS5 37 0.9 (3100) 1.1 (3800) 0.8 (2700) 1.0 (3400) 0.7 (2400) 0.9 (3100) 0.6 (2000) 0.8 (2700) SS7 46 1.1 (3800) 1.3 (4500 1.0 (3400) 1.2 (4000) 0.9 (3100) 1.0 (3400) 0.8 (2700) 0.9 (3000) SS9 63 1.5 (5200) 1.7 (5700) 1.3 (4500) 1.5 (5000 1.1 (3900) 1.3 (4300) 0.9 (3200) 1.1 (3700) Low Voltage SS5 12V 33 0.9 (3100 1.1 (3800) 0.8 (2700) 1.0 (3400) 0.7 (2400) 0.9 (3100) 0.6 (2000) 0.8 (2700) /Electric (Dual) SS5 Dual 37 0.9 (3100 1.1 (3800) 0.8 (2700) 1.0 (3400) 0.7 (2400) 0.9 (3100) 0.6 (2000) 0.8 (2700) 29 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 In hydronic mode In electric mode *Room sizes given in cubic metres for general guidance only based on normal heat output (80ºC) for domestic applications - always calculate heat losses. Glossary Glossary Smith s Accessories Wall mounted room thermostat - This accessory measures room temperature and switches off the heater when the set temperature is reached. The thermostat connects directly into either the heater s terminal block or power supply. Wall mounted control switch - Allows the product to be controlled from a switch mounted on the wall rather than the product. Linking to the heater is made by replacing the existing switch connections with the connections on the control switch. Flexible hoses - Flexible connections are a convenient way of connecting a heater into your system. They will provide an easy to achieve connection from your first-fix pipe work. In addition they will provide for a level of expansion and contraction in rigid pipe work and mitigating possible sound and vibration transmission. Adjustable low temperature cut-out (LTC) - This cut out device allows the user to set the water temperature (between 30ºC and 90ºC) at which the product will start to emit heat. It is more accurate than the standard fitted LTC (set at 35ºC) and enables more flexible use with both low system temperature heat pumps and higher system temperature boilers including biomass that can produce 80ºC flow temperatures. Plinth - The optional plinth creates an attractive floor standing unit and also conceals the pipe work from view. This can also be invaluable where it is necessary to prevent contact with heating pipes by vulnerable groups. External control harness - This accessory allows up to four products to be controlled from a single point. An External Control Harness will be required for each product. Each harness has plug and play connections. Proportional Heat Output Controller (PHOC) - This accessory controls the fan speed and hence the heat output of the unit. When the room temperature is below 15ºC the fan speed will run at its maximum speed to give fastest heat up time. When the room temperature reaches 15ºC the fan speed and heat output are modulated down progressively as the room temperature increases towards the set temperature. Thermostat and Auto-Speed control (T1/T2) - This accessory serves two purposes. Firstly, it becomes an integral room thermostat for the unit providing localised control and secondly, the heat output will be changed according to the temperature in the room. For example, the fan may work on full power up to 18ºC and above this temperature move to a lower fan speed. Normally the fan speeds used will be medium and low. Fresh air inlet spigot - An air inlet spigot is available for 100mm diameter rigid or flexible pipe. The spigot allows for a portion of air entering the appliance to be fresh air from outside the building. This ensures an adequate air change rate and improved air quality. Surface mounting kit - Provides a complete four-sided trim when fitted to a solid ceiling, 135 mm high. Ceiling tile spacer - Provides semi-recessed profile to match Skyline CT18 when used in ceiling tile frame, 85mm high. 46 www.smithsep.co.uk
