2016 Sessions in more detail Room A = cooking room, Room B = room 9, Room C = room 10, Room D = room 11, Room E = room 12 If there is a session with only light interest, it may be cancelled and your money refunded. Likewise, we may run an extra session when possible if one is over-subscribed. Please register early to avoid disappointment. Session cost $8 each or four sessions for $30 (Early Bird Special ~ Register before 28th March and pay only $7.50 each or four for $25). SATURDAY 2 nd APRIL SESSION 1 ~ 9:30am 10:45am Saturday 2 nd April SAT 1B ~ Introduction to becoming a beekeeper ~ Southland Bee Society Learn how to get started, where to source information and find a mentor, the rules and regulations, hive equipment, how to source bees & bee health. The Southland Bee Society also has a stall site for both days, featuring observation hives and honey/mead tastings. Come along to taste the collection of distinctively different Southland varietal honeys. SAT 1C ~ Garden Porn ~ Tanya Batt Tanya is zany and fun and travelling all the way from Waiheke Island to entertain us at our festival. Tanya travels to all corners of the world with her stories for both children and adults, often driving her distinctive "Little Red Riding Bus". She's fun, you should hear her! SAT 1D ~ Community food harvesting & preserving ~ Annika Korsten Have you ever been in a situation where you had a surplus of fruit and vegetables wondering what to do with it? Or have you witnessed fruit on trees going to waste? In this workshop Annika Korsten, Dunedin Community Food Harvesting Group Co- Coordinator, will talk about the current harvesting group in Dunedin and its community projects (e.g. preserving workshops, apple pressing) and links to other organizations. In the second half she will talk about starting up a group in your area and ideas to run skill-sharing workshops. She will also share some of her favourite recipes and some more quirky preserves. Annika Korsten, from Germany, has lived in Dunedin for 8 years and is interested in connecting people, food and the land. She is involved in a variety of community projects which aim to preserve skills, facilitate opportunities and hands-on experiences and create community. She has been the Co-Coordinator of Dunedin Community Food Harvesting for 3 years.

SESSION 2 ~ 11:15am 12:30pm Saturday 2 nd April SAT 2A ~ Making Autumn desserts ~ Rural Women Learn how to make Autumn desserts with the experts! And take home the recipes to make at home and share with your family. SAT 2B ~ Seaweed foraging ~ Peter Langlands Peter is a forager and an author. He writes about how, where and why to forage, specialising in New Zealand's edible seaweeds. He'll show and tell us all about the foods we can forage for free, and have on hand his guide to edible seaweeds of New Zealand. SAT 2C ~ Living in an eco-village ~ Tanya Batt Tanya Batt lives on Waiheke Island and has a garden like no other. Tanya will take us on an imaginary tour of her art-filled, one of a kind sub-tropical garden and do so in her usual zany style. She will also talk about the community she lives in on the island. Awaawaroa is an "intentional" community, designed and managed by those who live in it to be eco-friendly and a delightful environment in which to live, raise children, grow food and generally enjoy life. SAT 2D ~ Seed saving ~ Vanya Bailey Saving seeds saves you money while connecting you with a centuries old tradition of keeping the best seeds from your crops each year so the seed line adapts to your conditions. It is a vital way of keeping the diversity of varieties available in a time when seed sources are becoming increasingly commercialised and un-localised. You will take home a free seed selection and information to get you started and also learn all about the Heritage seed saving projects going on in Southland and how you can join. SESSION 3 ~ 1:15 2:30pm Saturday 2 nd April SAT 3A ~ Autumn preserving & recipes ~ Lynda Hallinan Roving editor and writer for New Zealand Gardener and Get Growing loves to make jam and writing about that sticky love. She'll be demonstrating her wasp-attracting craft at the festival and talking about her book of secrets, jam-making secrets that is, on the first day of the festival. She'll have copies for sale as well.

SAT 3B ~ Gardening in difficult soils ~ David McGee Sandy soils are a challenge but in this workshop you will hear, about then visit, two contrasting properties within 5 minutes walking distance of the festival site to see how they have adapted successfully to the conditions. One is 5 year old forest-garden-in-the-making, the other is superb vegetable garden growing successfully on what was a sand dune! SAT 3C ~ Feed your family on 1/4 acre ~ Suzie Best Covering start up and basics of turning your section into a cost saving productive home supermarket! Suzie will focus on Southland growing conditions for planning your crops, she is enthusiasm personified and will have you itching to turn your lawn into vegetable garden. SAT 3D ~ Steiner harvest crafts (making 'gnome') ~ Tanya Roberts This is an introduction to creative crafts inspired by Rudolf Steiner using the natural environment around us and following the rhythm of the seasons. These crafts are for children and adults alike. The workshops are a very simple introduction to doll making using carded wool to make a harvest gnome or a little girl, of which both forms are a core part of Steiner play, and can be remade in many different ways, looks and colours to suit the changing needs and seasons. SESSION 4 ~ 3:00pm 4:15pm Saturday 2 nd April SAT 4A ~ Making your own potpourri ~ Heritage Roses Southland The Heritage Roses Southland group are very passionate about our heritage roses, they will have an information and sale stall at the festival and will help you to make your own potpourri in this workshop. In this session she will talk about her selfsufficiency adventures, she is sure to inspire you on your own path towards self-sufficiency. SAT 4D ~ Orchard Parks ~ Robyn Guyton Robyn Guyton has lead the revival of interest in apple growing in Southland. Her work collecting cuttings from old orchards and grafting fresh apple trees from them has restored the heritage varieties and given new generations of Southlanders a chance to grow the apples their early-settler grandparents brought here. Robyn will talk about the history of the apple and her Open Orchard project here, and describe her new book on apples and their care. Learn how to brew probiotic drinks such as kombucha & jun. You'll be able to prepare healthy "fizzy" water kefir for your family and taste the benefits of milk kefir. SUN 3B ~ Towards urban self sufficiency ~ Dave Kennedy Dave is a very experienced urban gardener who plants & harvests all year round. This session includes a slideshow presentation of his garden & the focus will be on what you can plant now, so you can continue to harvest your own food over the winter. With his hens, raised beds and fruit trees he is less reliant on the supermarket.

SUN 3C ~ Food Forests ~ Robert Robert Guyton writes for gardening publications round the country and speaks to various groups about his own forest garden at Riverton. Robert will describe the development of the "food forest" he's planted and nurtured for over 25 years and his interest in every plant under the sun.
