SAFETY INFORMATION Safety is a combination of common sense, staying alert, and knowing how to use your hedge trimmer. WARNING: TO AVOID MISTAKES THAT COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY, DO NOT PLUG IN THE HEDGE TRIMMER UNTIL THE FOLLOWING STEPS HAVE BEEN READ AND UNDERSTOOD. 1. READ and become familiar with this entire instruction manual. LEARN the tool s applications, limitations, and possible hazards. 2. AVOID DANGEROUS CONDITIONS. DO NOT use in wet or damp areas or expose to rain. 3. DO NOT use in the presence of flammable liquids or gases. 4. KEEP BYSTANDERS AT A SAFE DISTANCE. NEVER allow children near the tool. 5. DRESS FOR SAFETY. DO NOT wear loose clothing, gloves, neckties, or jewellery (rings, watches) when operating tool. They can get caught and draw you into moving parts. 6. ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION. 7. ALWAYS remove the power cord plug from the electric outlet when making adjustments, changing parts or cleaning. 8. AVOID ACCIDENTAL START-UPS. Make sure the power switch is in the OFF position before plugging in the power cord. 9. DO NOT abuse the power cord. Do not use it to carry the tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts. Replace damaged cords immediately; they may create a shock or fire hazard. 10. NEVER LEAVE A RUNNING TOOL UNATTENDED. Turn the power switch to OFF. Do not leave the tool until it has come to a complete stop. 11. DO NOT OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. 12. MAINTAIN TOOLS PROPERLY. ALWAYS keep tools clean and in good working order. 13. CHECK FOR DAMAGED PARTS. Check for alignment of moving parts, binding, breakage, or any other conditions that may affect the tool s operation. Any part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced before use. 14. KEEP THE HANDLE DRY, CLEAN, AND FREE OF OIL AND GREASE. Always use a clean cloth when cleaning. Do not use solvents, brake fluids, gasoline, or other petroleum products to clean the tool. They may damage plastic parts. ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION. A hedge trimmer can throw foreign objects into your eyes, which could cause permanent eye damage. ALWAYS wear safety goggles (not glasses). Ordinary eyeglasses have only impact-resistant lenses...they are NOT safety goggles. 3

SAFETY INFORMATION WARNING: TO AVOID ELECTRICAL HAZARDS, FIRE HAZARDS, OR DAMAGE TO THE TOOL, USE PROPER CIRCUIT PROTECTION. YOUR HEDGE TRIMMER IS WIRED AT THE FACTORY FOR 120 V OPERATION. CONNECT TO A 120 V, 15 A CIRCUIT, AND USE A 15 A TIME-DELAYED FUSE OR CIRCUIT BREAKER. TO AVOID SHOCK OR FIRE WHEN THE EXTENSION CORD IS WORN, CUT, OR DAMAGED IN ANY WAY, REPLACE IT IMMEDIATELY. DOUBLE INSULATED This hedge trimmer has a plug that looks like the one shown in Fig. A. The hedge trimmer is double insulated to provide a double thickness of insulation between you and the tool s electrical system. All exposed metal parts are isolated from the internal metal motor components with protective insulation. Fig. A 1) 2-pronged plug 2) Properly grounded extension cord WARNING: TO AVOID INJURY, WHEN SERVICING THE HEDGE TRIMMER, USE ONLY IDENTICAL REPLACEMENT PARTS. WARNING: DOUBLE INSULATION DOES NOT TAKE THE PLACE OF NORMAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN OPERATING THIS TOOL. WARNING: TO AVOID ELECTROCUTION: 1. Use only identical replacement parts when servicing a tool with double insulation. Servicing should be performed by a qualified technician. 2. Do not use in wet or damp areas or expose to rain. GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS IN THE EVENT OF A MALFUNCTION OR BREAKDOWN, grounding provides the path of least resistance for electric current, and reduces the risk of electric shock. This tool is equipped with a POLARIZED plug. The plug MUST be plugged into a matching grounded extension cord in accordance with ALL local codes and ordinances. DO NOT MODIFY THE PLUG PROVIDED. If it will not fit the properly grounded extension cord, have the proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician. 4

SAFETY INFORMATION CAUTION: IN ALL CASES, MAKE CERTAIN THE RECEPTACLE IN QUESTION IS PROPERLY GROUNDED. IF YOU ARE NOT SURE, HAVE A CERTIFIED ELECTRICIAN CHECK THE RECEPTACLE. WARNING: THIS HEDGE TRIMMER IS FOR OUTDOOR USE ONLY. DO NOT EXPOSE TO RAIN OR USE IN DAMP LOCATIONS. GUIDELINES FOR USING EXTENSION CORDS USE THE PROPER EXTENSION CORD. Make sure your extension cord is in good condition. When using an extension cord, be sure to use one heavy enough to carry the current your product will draw. An undersized cord will cause overheating. The table below shows the correct size to use depending on cord length and nameplate ampere rating. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The smaller the gauge number, the heavier the cord. Ampere Rating Minimum Gauge for Extension Cords (AWG) (when using 120 V only) Total Length of Cord in Feet (meters) More Than Not More Than 25' (7.6 m) 50' (15 m) 100' (30.4 m) 150' (45.7 m) 0 6 18 16 16 14 6 10 18 16 14 12 10 12 16 16 14 12 12 16 14 12 Not Recommended Make sure your extension cord is properly wired and in good electrical condition. Always replace a damaged extension cord or have it repaired by a qualified person before using it. Keep your extension cords away from sharp objects, excessive heat and damp or wet areas. Use a separate electrical circuit for your tools. This circuit should not be less than #12 wire and should be protected with a 15 A time-delayed fuse. Before connecting the motor to the power line, make sure the switch is in the OFF position and the electric current is rated the same as the current stamped on the motor nameplate. Running at a lower voltage will damage the motor. WARNING: ALTHOUGH THIS TOOL IS DOUBLE INSULATED, THE EXTENSION CORD AND RECEPTACLE MUST STILL BE GROUNDED WHILE IN USE TO PROTECT THE OPERATOR FROM ELECTRIC SHOCK. 5

SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES 1. IF YOU ARE NOT thoroughly familiar with the operation of the hedge trimmer, obtain advice from a qualified person. 2. MAKE SURE wiring codes and recommended electrical connections are followed. The hedge trimmer is double insulated. When servicing, use only identical replacement parts. 3. AVOID UNINTENTIONAL STARTING. Don t carry plugged-in trimmer with finger on switch. Make sure switch is in the OFF position when plugging in. 4. DO NOT operate the hedge trimmer when you are tired or your visibility is limited. Do not use the hedge trimmer at night or in reduced light. 5. DO NOT grasp the exposed cutting blade when picking up or holding the hedge trimmer. Keep cutting edge sharp and clean for best performance and to reduce the risk of injury. WARNING: AVOID SERIOUS INJURY. THE BLADES COAST AFTER TURNING OFF. ALWAYS KEEP BOTH HANDS ON THE TWO HANDLES TO PREVENT YOUR HAND FROM TOUCHING THE BLADES. 6. Make sure the hedge trimmer switch is in the OFF position when clearing jammed material from blade. 7. MAKE all adjustments with the switch in the OFF position and the hedge trimmer disconnected from the power source. DANGER IF THE HEDGE TRIMMER BLADE JAMS OR GETS CAUGHT ON ANY ELECTRICAL CORD OR WIRES, DO NOT TOUCH THE BLADE FOR ANY REASON! IT CAN BE ELECTRICALLY LIVE AND CAUSE SERIOUS OR FATAL INJURY! Release or drop the hedge trimmer in the quickest, safest way. If possible, disconnect the damaged electrical cord from its power source. If not possible, call an electrician, electrical contractor, or the power company for assistance. Failure to heed this danger will cause serious personal injury and possible death. 8. DO NOT FORCE THE HEDGE TRIMMER. It will do the job better and with less likelihood of a risk of injury when used at the rate for which it was designed. 9. DO NOT OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. 10. ALWAYS use accessories provided or recommended by the manufacturer of the hedge trimmer. Do not substitute. 11. KEEP guards in place and in working order. Keep blades sharp. Keep hands and feet away from cutting area. 12. KEEP VENTILATION OPENINGS clear of debris. 13. Before using the hedge trimmer, remove any sticks, debris or objects that could become entangled or thrown by the hedge trimmer. 14. STORE the hedge trimmer indoors in dry, high, or a locked-up place, out of the reach of children. 15. When using this tool, make sure that there are no other persons or animals within a 30' (9.1 m) radius. 16. ALWAYS wear hearing protection. 6

Hedging Tips WARNING: TO AVOID INJURY, DO NOT CARRY THE HEDGE TRIMMER WITH YOUR FINGER ON THE SWITCH. AVOID UNINTENTIONAL STARTING. Before Hedging IMPORTANT! Lubricate the blade with light machine oil. Ignoring this step will decrease blade life and cause difficult operation. During Hedging OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Before starting the hedge trimmer, hold the handles with both hands. Keep the blade facing away from you. Wear gloves when trimming thorny or prickly growth. When trimming new growth, swing the hedge trimmer in a wide sweeping action. Move the hedge trimmer to feed the branches directly into the blade's cutting edges. When trimming thicker, older stems and branches, cut with a sawing action. If stems are thicker than 9/16" (14 mm), use a handsaw or pruning saw. Do not try to cut stems that are too large. To help keep the hedge level (Fig. 4) Measure the height you want the hedge. Stretch a string along the hedge at that height. Trim the hedge just above the string guideline. Fig. 4 String 10

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS To help keep the hedge uniform and healthy (Fig. 5) Always trim the hedge so the branches are exposed to the air, sun, and adequate moisture. Trim the top slightly narrower than the bottom, or trim the sides straight up. Do not trim the hedge wider at the top than the bottom. Fig. 5 WARNING: Do not use the hedge trimmer in rain or in wet locations, or to cut wet hedges or shrubbery. Do not use the hedge trimmer if the blades are bent. Wear non-slip footwear while operating the hedge trimmer. WARNING: Do not place your hands near the front or near the blade until the hedge trimmer has come to a complete stop. Always allow several seconds for the blade to stop its reciprocating motion after turning the hedge trimmer OFF. 11

MAINTENANCE WARNING: ALWAYS TURN OFF THE TOOL AND UNPLUG THE EXTENSION CORD FROM THE OUTLET BEFORE MAINTAINING THE HEDGE TRIMMER. GENERAL MAINTENANCE Keep your hedge trimmer clean and in good repair for maximum performance and machine longevity. Before each use: Inspect the switch and extension cord for damage. Check for damaged, missing, or worn parts. Check for loose screws, misalignment, moving parts that are jammed, or any other conditions that may affect the operation. During use: If abnormal vibration or noise occurs, turn off the tool immediately and have the problem corrected before further use. Do not use the hedge trimmer until it is properly repaired or replaced. CLEANING Wipe the outside of the hedge trimmer with a dry soft cloth. Do not hose down or wash the hedge trimmer with water. Remove dried clippings and mud. Brush or blow dust, debris, and grass clippings out of the air vents. Keep the vents free of obstruction. WARNING: TO AVOID INJURY, ELECTRIC SHOCK, OR DAMAGE TO THE HEDGE TRIMMER, NEVER IMMERSE THE HEDGE TRIMMER IN LIQUID OR ALLOW LIQUID TO FLOW INSIDE THE TOOL. WARNING: TO AVOID DAMAGE OR ELECTRIC SHOCK, DO NOT USE STRONG SOLVENTS OR DETERGENTS ON THE PLASTIC HOUSING OR PLASTIC COMPONENTS. CERTAIN HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS MAY DAMAGE PLASTIC COMPONENTS, AND MAY ALSO CAUSE A SHOCK HAZARD. 12
