INTACH S AWARD FOR BEST PRACTICES IN CONSERVATION PROJECT DESCRIPTION FORMAT A: Project Summary The summary should cover: - Background of the project - Conservation project s goals and objectives (client s brief) - Key conservation interventions - Time frame - Project size (ha or sqm) and cost (in Rupees) - Involvement of key stakeholders and partners (including community, private sector and public sector, if relevant), with contributions of each partner clearly indicated Max. 1000 words B: Description of the Cultural Heritage Property The description of the cultural heritage property should include: - Historical background of the property - Articulation of the property s overall cultural significance and heritage values such as historical, social, cultural, architectural and other values (please see guidelines for explanation) - Use of the property - Heritage protection status of the property Max. 1500 words C: Description of the condition of the Cultural Heritage Property before Conservation The description of the condition of the cultural heritage property before the conservation project was carried out should explain: - Previous condition of physical features, structure, finishes, layout, setting, etc. - Factors that were affecting the condition of the heritage property (environmental, social, etc.) Max. 1000 words D: Detailed Description of the Conservation Work The description of the conservation work should explain: - Conservation philosophy and guidelines used for the project - Conservation methodology - Compliance of the work with existing legislation/regulations, especially those concerning heritage protection Max. 1000 words

E: Explanation of how the project meets the criteria for the Awards This section should explain how the project meets criteria of the Awards, as follows: Understanding the Place Max. 2000 words a. How well the conservation/restoration work articulates the property s heritage values in order to convey the spirit of place; b. How well the conservation/restoration work interprets the property s cultural, social, historical and architectural significance; c. Appropriate use or adaptation of the property; Technical Achievement Max. 2000 words d. The understanding of the technical issues of conservation/restoration in interpreting the property s significance; e. The use and quality control of appropriate building, artisan and conservation techniques; f. The use of appropriate materials; g. How well any added elements or creative technical solutions respect the character and inherent spatial quality of the property; Social and Policy Impact Max. 1500 words h. The overall complexity, sensitivity and technical consistency of the project; i. The on-going socio-economic viability and relevance of the project, and provision for its future use and maintenance; j. The manner in which the process and the final product contribute to the surrounding environment and the local community s cultural and historical continuum; and k. The influence of the project on conservation practice and policy locally, nationally, regionally or internationally.

ANNEX TO PROJECT DESCRIPTION To complete the dossier, please ANNEX to the project description: Drawings All drawings should be reduced to A4 size and have legends that indicate scale and direction. The following drawings are required: - For all projects: maps showing location of project in neighbourhood, in city, in country (can be an aerial photograph) - For building projects: site plan, floor plans and sections, showing pre- and post-restoration conditions. Elevation drawings are optional. All alterations/new additions should be clearly marked in color. - For settlements: street elevation drawings, a district plan showing building footprints, and site plan/floor plans/sections of key buildings which were conserved. Photographs The project description should be illustrated by color photographic prints in accordance with these guidelines: - High-quality prints with print dimension 5 x 7 - Included in the CD ROM as individual digital files with high resolution (350 dpi), preferably in TIFF format - All photographs must be clearly labelled - Location of the photographs should be indicated on a floor plan (please see guidelines for example). The photographs should show: - For all projects: pre- and post restoration conditions, including the overall appearance of the building in its setting, exterior and interior views (minimum 10 pairs of photographs showing BEFORE and AFTER conditions, preferably from the same camera angle) - For all projects: details of the conservation project in progress, including people at work, details of materials and building/conservation techniques used - For all projects: current use of the conserved property by residents, tenants or visitors (festivals, events, exhibits, etc.) - For projects that encompass a number of heritage assets: photo documentation as listed above should be showing each heritage asset - For settlements and landscapes: also provide an overall shot of the streetscape, townscape, landscape, etc. - Additional Materials Additional Material Additional supporting documentation may be submitted such as videos, articles, etc that are directly relevant to the conservation work submitted under the project. Materials related to tourism attractions, historical personages and other aspects of the site should not be submitted. CD ROM The entire dossier including the project description (in PDF format), drawings (preferably TIFF format) and photographs (preferably TIFF format) should also be submitted on CD ROM in electronic format.
