GENERAL MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS AIRFLOW CONFIGURATION Units are available in a variety of airflow configurations to suit a wide variety of applications. Basic airflow arrangement may be either upflow or downflow. Downflow models are designed for free air return through the top of the unit, with either ducted or free discharge through the bottom of the unit. Upflow models may be free return via the standard front return air grille, or through the bottom return air access. Alternatively, the return air may be ducted into the rear of the unit. The upflow unit discharge can be ducted from the top of the unit, or optional plenums may be ordered for free discharge into the conditioned space. FRAME AND CABINET The structural frame of the unit is constructed of heavy gauge welded steel tube and formed steel sections. The frame is powder coated after assembly for maximum corrosion protection. All external panels are removable for total service access. The electrical compartment and compressor/piping access panels may be removed for service and monitoring without interrupting unit operation. Panels are retained with quick-opening captive fasteners. The steel panels include 1 inch thick, 1-1/2 pound insulation to ensure quiet operation. All exterior panels are powder coated to provide maximum durability and appearance. FAN AND MOTOR The high capacity fan assembly features two forward curved, double width, double inlet centrifugal blowers with selfaligning and lifetime lubricated ball bearings. The fans are selected to provide system airflow at low RPM, enhancing quiet operation. The fan assembly is employed in a drawthrough design to ensure an even airflow pattern across the coil and filter sections. Motors are NEMA T-frame designs, provided with manual reset overloads mounted in the high voltage control compartment. The motor is mounted on a heavy duty adjustable slide base. Variable pitch drive pulleys allow field adjustment of the system airflow capacity. EVAPORATOR COIL FILTERS All units are provided with deep pleated, 4 inch thick, 30 % efficiency filters (efficiency rating as per ASHRAE Std. 52-76). Filters can be quickly and easily changed on all models. Filter access is from the top or both sides on downflow models, and from the right hand side on upflow models. Higher filter efficiencies may be substituted as an option. ELECTRICAL PANEL The user interface for the microprocessor control system is flush mounted on the front of the unit. Access to all control components is through this hinged vertical front panel. The high voltage section is protected by a self-latching inner panel, allowing access to the low voltage circuits without risk to operating personnel. The high voltage section contains all contactors, transformers, overload devices, and terminal connections. Independent overcurrent protection is provided for all internal branch circuits. REFRIGERATION CIRCUITS Dual independent refrigeration circuits include high efficiency 'Scroll' compressors. Scroll compressors provide unmatched efficiency, durability, and reliability. The compressors are mounted on vibration isolators to further enhance their low operating sound levels. Each compressor is protected by a auto-reset internal overload, and external high and low pressure switches. The compressor compartment may be accessed without interrupting system operation. Liquid line sight glasses/moisture indicators are provided for visual inspection of adequate system refrigerant charge, or if moisture has contaminated the system. A high capacity refrigerant filter-drier is installed in each circuit to ensure long term system reliability. Externally equalized thermal expansion valves are installed on both evaporator coil circuits. The valves feature a balanced port design to ensure optimum refrigerant flow modulation through a wide cooling load range. The A-frame direct expansion refrigerant coil features two completely interwoven circuits to ensure that maximum coil surface is active under all load conditions. The coil design features enhanced fin and tube surfaces for maximum heat transfer and efficiency. The large face area result in low air velocity with minimum turbulence. The state-of-the-art coil design results in a consistently high sensible heat ratio, under all operating conditions, which is most desired for applications involving cooling of electronic equipment. The entire coil assembly sits in a corrosion free stainless steel drain pan. The drain outlet connection is conveniently accessible, through the front access panel, for inspection and cleaning. 2
SYSTEMS ELECTRIC REHEAT The two-stage electric reheat elements are of an open wire design with low thermal mass for immediate response to system demand. The reheat has sufficient capacity to maintain dry bulb temperatures during the dehumidification cycle. The low watt density grid spans a significant percentage of the air path area, resulting in minimal temperature stratification through the unit. The electric coil wires are supported by ceramic insulating bushings in a rigid steel frame. Overheat protection is provided by a fast acting thermal switch. STEAM HUMIDIFIER An electric steam generating humidifier, with proportional output, injects hygienic vapor directly into the air stream. The humidifier features a disposable cylinder, electronic controls, an auto-flush cycle, and self-diagnostics. Water borne impurities are removed at the electrodes and deposited in the removable cylinder where they are periodically flushed out through the automatic drain sequence. Solid mineral scale sinks to the bottom of the cylinder, which is easily removed and replaced. The control unit provides an indication to advise when cylinder replacement is required. AIR-COOLED SYSTEMS Condenser Outdoor remote condensers feature multiple direct-drive propeller fans with one variable speed fan for low ambient head pressure control. Condensers are selected to provide the required heat rejection for the indoor system. The condenser casing is constructed from heavy gauge galvanized steel. Cabinet is sectioned with individual fan chambers. Coils are constructed of aluminum fins mechanically bonded to copper tubes. Fan motors are individually wired to a weather resistant control panel with weather resistant harnesses. Separate fusing is provided for each motor. The standard head pressure control system features a dual input electronic speed controller which senses the head pressure of both compressor circuits and varies the speed of one fan to maintain consistent condensing pressure. The other fan motors are cycled by pressure actuated switches. This system allows for operation to ambient temperatures as low as 0 F. WATER-COOLED SYSTEMS Condenser High efficiency shell and tube counterflow condensers are solidly mounted within the unit to provide the required heat rejection. Condensers are constructed of enhanced copper inner tubes within a steel outer shell. Pressure controlled water regulating valves are provided to maintain consistent condensing pressures at various water temperatures and flow rates. Three-way regulating valves may be ordered to allow constant water flow through the unit and tower pump circuit. GLYCOL-COOLED SYSTEMS Condenser High efficiency shell and tube counterflow condensers are solidly mounted within the unit to provide the required heat rejection. Condensers are constructed of enhanced copper inner tubes within a steel outer shell. Pressure controlled glycol regulating valves are provided to maintain consistent condensing pressures at various fluid temperatures and flow rates. These three-way regulating valves allow constant glycol flow through the unit and dry-cooler, to prevent dead-heading of the pump circuit. Glycol Dry-cooler Outdoor glycol dry-coolers feature multiple direct-drive propeller fans. The dry-cooler casing is constructed from heavy gauge galvanized steel. The cabinet is sectioned with individual fan chambers. Coils are constructed of aluminum fins mechanically bonded to copper tubes. Fan motors are individually wired to a weather resistant control panel with weather resistant harnesses. Separate fusing is provided for each motor. Dry-cooler capacity is controlled by fan cycling. CHILLED WATER SYSTEMS A - Frame Chilled Water Coil The multi-circuited chilled water coil is designed for maximum fluid heat transfer, at low water pressure drop. The entire coil surface is active under all cooling conditions, resulting in maximum dehumidification capacity. The entire coil assembly sits in a corrosion free stainless steel drain pan. Chilled Water Control Valve The fully modulating valve is throttled in response to the cooling ramp output signal from the microprocessor control system. Cooling output is proportional to setpoint deviation. The valve features a direct coupled actuator with no external linkages to adjust. The valve configuration may be either 3- way (standard) or 2-way, as required by the circulating water loop arrangement. 3
SYSTEM OPTIONS & ACCESSORIES SYSTEM OPTIONS AIR-COOLED SYSTEMS Refrigerant Head Pressure Control The outdoor air-cooled condenser may be outfitted with a liquid flooding system to maintain consistent condensing pressures under extreme low ambient conditions. The system includes heated and insulated receivers, check valves, and three-way head pressure control valves. This package allows system startup and operation at ambient temperatures to -30F. WATER/GLYCOL-COOLED SYSTEMS Hot Gas Reheat The heat reclaim coil is suspended below the A-frame evaporator. Hot discharge gas is routed through the reclaim coil to provide the first stage of reheat. Water-cooled units include an additional supplemental electric coil, employed to ensure sufficient reheat capacity to offset the compressor capacity during dehumidification. The hot gas reheat circuit includes a one row reclaim coil and a three-way solenoid operated valve. (This option not available on upflow units) Free-cooling Option An auxiliary chilled water coil is located upstream of the DX evaporator coil and piped in series with the refrigerant condensers. Depending on the entering fluid temperature this coil can provide partial or full cooling capacity, equal to the mechanical refrigeration system output. The microprocessor control system monitors the entering fluid temperature versus the room temperature to determine sufficient differential for free-cooling. A motorized three-way valve diverts fluid flow to the auxiliary coil. In order to allow full fluid flow through the unit at all times, three-way regulating valves are provided on the refrigerant condensers. The Deluxe Microprocessor Control must be ordered with this option. High Pressure Water Circuit The standard 150 psig condenser water circuit rating may be increased with the option of two-way, 230 psig or 350 psig rated water regulating valves. The coaxial condenser is rated for maximum working pressure of 400 psig on the fluid side. ACCESSORIES Unit Mounted Disconnect Switch A panel mounted non-fused disconnect is installed in the line voltage section of the electrical panel. This rotary action selector handle is mounted through the external front electrical access panel. The switch mechanism prevents opening of the panel unless the selector is in the 'OFF' position. (A hidden interlock bypass is provided to allow access by qualified personnel.) Hot Gas Bypass Bypass regulators are provided on both compressor circuits. Hot gas from the compressor discharge is diverted to the evaporator coil inlet, to maintain evaporator pressure at a preset minimum. The resulting reduction in cooling capacity allows extended compressor operation at minimal loads. Hydronic Reheat Hot water or steam reheat coils are factory installed and piped in all downflow models (upflow models - coils are mounted in discharge plenum; shipped loose). Control is by a modulating output signal from the microprocessor, to a motorized two-way valve. The reheat coil capacity is selected with sufficient output to maintain space temperatures during the dehumidification process. Upflow Discharge Plenum Discharge plenums are available in standard heights of 20", 24", and 36". Plenums are fully insulated with front mounted, double deflection discharge grilles. High Efficiency Filters The standard 30% efficient filters may be upgraded to 4 inch thick 60-65% or 80-85% efficient filters. Condensate Pump A high temperature condensate pump is factory mounted in the unit (Upflow models only - Downflow models; pump ships loose for field mounting under the floor). Condensate pump is complete with high capacity sump, factory wired motor, and automatic control. Water Detectors Single point water detectors provide indication of fluid leakage from the unit or associated piping. The detectors alert the microprocessor of the presence of water, which signals a visual and audible alarm. Multiple detectors may be connected in parallel to the alarm inputs. Floorstand Floorstands are adjustable + 2 inches. The floorstand allows installation and connection of the unit independent of the raised floor structure. 4
