SITE INVENTORY

Overall Map of Selected Area

Responsibilities within Grounds Turf Trees Shrubs Ground Covers Flowers (3 Seasonal Change-outs, Tulips, Mums) Mulch Irrigation Hard Surface Cleaning Athletic Fields (Intramural fields) Solid Waste Services

Parker Brothers Intramural fields is included in the selection for this presentation. This site is the location for all intramural sports played annually, including football, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, and softball. 100% Bermuda turf and sections are over seeded with Perennial Rye during colder months. The maintenance of this location will be discussed more in the Turf section of the presentation.

Intramural Field This shows the intramural fields that are diagrammed above. Sports include flag football, ultimate Frisbee, soccer, and softball played year round.

Campus Inventory

Campus Inventory The previous campus measurements include measurements of each piece of the landscape. These measurements are the basis to producing all schedules for Grounds maintenance. We believe that until you have a detailed inventory of your campus and know exactly how much of what you are dealing with, you cannot properly move forward with planning and scheduling. This method has been very beneficial in justifying more labor or resources if necessary, because the justification is backed by actual standards and leaves out guess work. Sidewalks and parking lots are listed for the purpose of cleaning and vegetation control. As will be discussed later within the presentation, hard surface repair on roads is completed by the City of Waco. Sidewalk maintenance is completed on an as-needed basis.

North Village Typical landscape around campus showing the many pieces that must be inventoried in the campus inventory.

Above shows the Seasonal Color bed size for each location within the selected zones. In addition, this outlines the type of flower and quantity for each bed as well. This is used to project out cost and supply needs for the annual color locations. Additionally, this allows us to plan our planting schemes for the campus. Spring Installation: April, Summer Installation: June, Fall/Winter Installation: October

Seasonal Color Bed This shows a typical seasonal color bed from campus. The beds shown include 4 change-outs annually, including Petunias in April, Begonias in June, Mums in October, and Pansies in November.

Seasonal Plantings Shown here are Tulips planted in December and what the result looks like in Spring when they bloom.

Plants and Material The list of plant material shown previously includes all tree, plant, and perennial species within the identified maintenance area. Common Bermuda and St. Augustine are the two primary species of grass on campus. Select areas include Tiffway 419 Bermuda and Zoysia Grass. Additionally, the Seasonal Color schedule shows an inventory of all planting beds that require annual change-outs and what varieties of flowers used. Double shredded hardwood mulch is applied as a campus standard in all planting beds at a 2 minimum depth. Precautions are taken around trees to not bury the root flare and cause damage to the tree. As shown by the previous slides, we hope to not create a monoculture within the different divisions of plant material. When new plantings are determined, we ensure that a variety of plant material is used. This plant palette along with the campus inventory shown before provide great insight to labor needs during different seasons, allowing us to complete necessary trimming and cut-backs efficiently.

Irrigation Controllers

Irrigation Controllers The previous slide displayed a list of irrigation controllers within the selected area of campus. When installing new systems or controllers on campus we will use Rainbird controllers. However, during new construction through the University the Landscape Architect selects controller. We have begun to retrofit all controllers on campus to the Toro Sentinel Central Control System. More will be discussed in the Irrigation section. This is the new specification used for any irrigation controller installation. The station count help to understand the expandability of each controller for future use and understand more during the planning phases of projects. Controller condition/replacement is vital to understand where funds are needed the most around campus.

Shown here is an inventory of the 5 fountains within the selected zones. For maintenance we must follow draining and cleaning procedures outlined on the next slide, which includes coordination with the City of Waco for water testing and discharge.

Pool & Fountain Procedure

Truett Courtyard Shown here is one of the fountains that is maintained on campus. This fountain is supplied from a hose bib and does not have any auto fill so it must be checked weekly for levels.

Solid Waste/Recycling The following slides show the inventory of our solid waste operation. At Baylor we provide full on campus solid waste services including litter control, trash can servicing, and dumpsters. In addition, Baylor operates through a single stream recycling program with Sunbright Disposal Services in Waco. Currently, Baylor does not have any outdoor recycling receptacles, but has started looking into the need on campus. Lastly, inside of buildings there are recycle containers for paper, bottles, and glass that are serviced by the on campus housekeeping staff. The purchasing and locations are selected by the Baylor Sustainability group, which the Grounds department works closely with.

Indoor Recycle Cans This picture shows the indoor recycle cans that are provided by the Baylor Sustainability group and maintained by Housekeeping.

Dumpster Inventory

Trash Can Inventory This list shows all trash can locations with quantities within the selected area. These cans are serviced by 1 FTE daily which is also responsible for litter pick-up within the zone.

Recycle Tracking

Baylor University Money Walk I wanted to include this because this is a pivotal piece of how we maintain campus. Ultimately this should be the highest maintained area on campus because it drives recruitment and eventually the success of the University.
