Reiman Gardens 1407 University Blvd. Ames, IA 50011 I m pleased to personally invite you to join me as we explore Philadelphia and neighboring Delaware, home to some of the most spectacular public gardens in the world. World Class Destinations Our visit includes world-class destinations: Longwood Gardens, considered the country s iconic world-class public garden, and Chanticleer, revered by horticulture experts as the most creative and inspiring. We ll also visit the 77-room Nemours Estate mansion, housing the largest formal French gardens in North America and Mt. Cuba Center, a DuPont estate dedicated to native plant preservation. We will tour renowned gardens at iconic sites such as The Brandywine River Museum of Art, Terrain at Styers, and the Hagley Museum and Library (the first du Pont family home). A special evening at the home of my Friends Dan & Peggy A very special evening will be spent at the home of my friends Dan Benarcik, horticulturist at Chanticleer, and horticulturist Peggy Anne Montgomery. We ll enjoy evening hors d oeuvres in their spectacular home garden. The City of Brotherly Love We ll spend a day in one of America s oldest and most historic cities, Philadelphia, exploring sights such as Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, the Reading Terminal Market, and the Betsy Ross House. You will also have the chance to dine at the City Tavern, a reconstructed Colonial tavern where servers in period dress deliver old-fashioned American fare. Come on along! I have personally visited each of these sites multiple times, and can t wait to host our group. This tour has been planned with Reiman Gardens members and friends in mind and the sites have been selected to maximize our experience. Please see the attached itinerary for a description of our complete tour route and I look forward to hosting you this September! US Army Photo by Rachel Larue Reiman Gardens Group Gardens of Brandywine Valley With a tradition of horticulture going back 300 years, Philadelphia is America s Garden Capital. Over the course of five days, experience grand garden estates, exquisite cultural collections, innovative urban landscape design, and dazzling private and public artworks. See the iconic Liberty Bell on your Philadelphia City Tour DAY 1 WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2018 Travelers arrive today by 5 p.m. at their leisure. For fliers, our Courtyard Airport property has complimentary shuttle service. Should you choose to drive, you may leave your car at the hotel during the tour for a nominal charge. D DAY 2 THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2018 Colors abound this morning at Chanticleer Garden, known for its contemporary layout within a historic setting, and called by Garden Design magazine America s Most Inspiring Garden. The Chanticleer estate dates from the early 20th-century, when land along the Main Line of the Pennsylvania Railroad was developed for summer homes to escape the heat of Philadelphia. Next, we ll visit the Brandywine River Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, renowned for its holding of the Wyeth family of artists. The Museum s outstanding Heritage Collection is a cross section of American art with a special focus on artistic practice in the Brandywine Valley. Later this afternoon and evening, we take in one of the world s great gardens, Longwood Gardens. A living expression of founder Pierre S. du Pont, you ll be inspired by the intricate fountain systems, meticulous gardens, architectural grandeur, and awe-inspiring discoveries awaiting at every turn. After time to meander amongst this incredible venue, we ll enjoy dinner here. B, L, D Visit the colorful Longwood Gardens DAY 3 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2018 Nemours Mansion, founded by Alfred I. dupoint (1864-1935) comprises an exquisite 77-room mansion, the largest formal French gardens in North America, a Chauffer s Garage housing a collection of vintage automobiles used on the Estate, and nearly 200 acres of scenic woodlands, meadows and lawns. You ll have free time this morning to roam amongst the grounds and through the mansion. Next, we ll discover the storied history of the Mt. Cuba Center. I want this to be a place where people will learn to appreciate our native plants and to see how these plants can enrich their lives so that they, in turn, will become conservators of our natural habitats, said Lammot du Pont

Copeland, who along with his wife Pamela owned this estate in the early 1900 s. The botanical garden, with over 50 acres of display gardens and over 500 acres of natural lands, focuses on native plants and ecosystems. A visit to the Brandywine Valley isn t complete without a visit to Hagley. It is here that the du Pont family first settled in America, built their first home, and began the black powder manufacturing business that became the foundation for all the other du Pont enterprises in the world. Today, Hagley is 235 picturesque acres of wooded rolling hills along the rushing Brandywine River dotted with stone ruins of the black powder industry and the original ancestral home and gardens of the du Pont family. Who hasn t wanted a behind-the-scenes look into the private garden of a public gardener? Dan Benarcik and his wife Peggy Anne Montgomery both work in professional horticulture. Thanks to their keen eyes for design and a strong shared knowledge of plants, there s always something interesting to see throughout many outdoor rooms. Dan and Peggy look forward to sharing their garden with you this afternoon. B, L DAY 4 SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2018 This morning starts out with a visit to Terrain at Styers, a favorite local spot to shop for inspiring home and garden décor, furniture, containers, gifts, personal care items, plus objects and antiques from around the world. Then, enjoy lunch on your own at Reading Terminal Market, Philadelphia s famous indoor farmer s market offering diverse fare, housewares, local food selections & area specialties since 1892 (don t miss the Amish donuts!). In the afternoon, we ll embark on an overview tour of key landmarks from the nation s beginnings, riding cobblestone streets past Independence National Historical Park, 18 th Century Garden, Headhouse Square, Christ Church Burial Ground, the Betsy Ross House and more. Our special farewell dinner takes place at City Tavern, one of President John Adams favorites spots in the city, founded in 1773. Keep an eye out for staff in period costume and a visit from Owner/Chef Walter Staib. Our final night is at a hotel in Downtown Philadelphia, with-in easy walking distance of many of the historic sections of town. B, D DAY 5 SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2018 We ll stroll through the classical English landscape structures and sculpture gardens at Morris Arboretum, a Victorian arboretum in the Northwestern corner of Philadelphia. You ll enjoy the elegant beauty of the 19th-century grounds, complete with a formal rose garden, majestic old trees and unusual plants from North America, Asia, Africa and Europe. Kids of all ages love the garden railway here, and the arboretum s soaring permanent Tree Adventure exhibit gives a bird s eye view of the forest on a 450-foot-long canopy walk. Enriched with scented memories, you ll journey back home this afternoon to America s heartland. B, L Edward Savaria, Jr., for Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau Enjoy the sights and smells of the Reading Terminal Market.
