NAE Delivers Talk at Safety Forum for CNL Suppliers CNL s vision for the revitalized Chalk River site (Image: CNL) CHALK RIVER, ONTARIO In January, NA Engineering Associates Inc. s Larry Walton delivered a presentation at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Suppliers Safety Forum in Chalk River, Ontario. Attendees included contractors, consultants, and staff at CNL. The forum was intended to engage suppliers on issues regarding safety in the nuclear sector. The presentation covered the firm s perspective as a consultant in approaching safe work at CNL and other properties for nuclear owners and operators. It outlined the experiences the firm has had advising major clients on safety practices inside and outside of the nuclear sector. Also highlighted were the tools available to consultants when abiding by best-practices for safety in the nuclear sector. The collaborative spirit of the forum is impactful. Anytime you can get a diverse group engaged in a discussion about improving safety practices and raising-thebar as an industry it s a really positive thing, and it yields positive results. said Walton, a partner and Senior Vice President with the firm. One of the other topics covered as part of the talk was NA Engineering Associates Inc. s safety evolution: the gradual refinement and formalization of safety procedures undertaken by the firm. It is a process that Walton has helped to spearhead over the past decade. It has been a true evolution over time. We ve gone from OHSA Green Book compliant, to developing our own health and safety policy, to maintaining lessons-learned and having pre-job briefings. We have always, always maintained a safetyfirst philosophy, continued Walton, and we try to live by that in everything we do as a company.

NAE Provides Fire Protection Audit to Support Safe Work at Nordion in Ottawa OTTAWA, ONTARIO Members of our Fire Protection Team recently traveled to Nordion s Ottawa headquarters, undertaking an audit of the facility and its operating procedures. The audit involved a detailed review of safety procedures, a walkdown at the site, resulting in a comprehensive report covering recommendations to continue safe operations at Nordion. The audit was performed in accordance with the requirements of CSA-N393 Fire protection for facilities that process, handle, or store nuclear substances, ensuring compliance with the National Building and Fire Codes, among other standards. The completion of such an audit supports the continuity of Nordion s operating license (granted by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission). Nordion is a leading provider in medical isotopes and gamma technologies, operating in more than 40 countries around the world. They are known for the processing, packaging, and delivery of medical isotopes, and are a leading supplier of Cobalt-60: a radioactive isotope used to sterilize medical devices and supplies, foodstuffs, and hundreds of other common items. As part of the audit process, our Fire Protection Team provided guidance on potential upgrades to both the facility and its already-robust fire safety program. This guidance followed a thorough inspection by our team, including an audit of the following components: Fire Alarm System Fire Sprinkler System Clean Agent Suppression Systems Facility Safety Components Storage Areas This project represents another step in our firm s15+ year history of facilitating relationships with leaders in the nuclear sector. NA Engineering Associates Inc. continues to utilize the skills of its team members to expand into the fire protection market and advance its work in the nuclear sector.

Designing the First Major Cannabis Production Facility in Perth County PERTH COUNTY, ONTARIO In a project completed for GREENSEAL CANNABIS CO., our firm provided prime consultant and engineering services for the very first licensed medical cannabis production facility in Perth County, Ontario. Our consulting services for the project included: site planning, building design and layout, structural design, as well as mechanical and electrical engineering. It s a really exciting project for us, mostly because the building is the first of its kind, unique within the area, said Brad Miller, NA Engineering Associates Inc. s Project Manager. It presents both its own set of requirements, and its own set of challenges that our work had to successfully overcome. Special consideration was given in the design of the building s mechanical systems, in order to provide odor control in exhausted air and filtration systems, ultimately preventing the ingress of insects from the outdoors into their growing facility. A blossoming industry in Canada, medical cannabis production requires that a licensed facility adhere to strict guidelines dictated by Health Canada in terms of ensuring product safety and security. Our firm worked closely with the client to develop a building design plan that would be cost effective to build and to operate, and would meet the necessary criteria in order for the facility s license to be obtained. The facility is approximately 28,000 square-feet in size, and was completed this past fall.

Supporting Kinectrics Investments in Bruce County TEESWATER & TIVERTON, ONTARIO NA Engineering Associates Inc. has recently been engaged by Kinectrics to support two strategic industrial projects near Bruce Power. Our firm has been working closely with Kinectrics throughout the design process, ensuring that finished buildings will reflect the needs of their personnel and the standards required for their work and licensing. The buildings are both part of Kinectrics long term strategy to provide localized support for both the local community and Bruce Power. The first project, known as Kinectrics North, is a major renovation designed by our firm for an existing 37,000 squarefoot warehouse purchased by Kinectrics in Tiverton. The location of the site is wellsuited to support work coming from the nearby Bruce Power Nuclear Generating Stations, and is anticipated to create approximately 50 jobs for the surrounding area. The finished building will be licensed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to handle radioactive material. Work made possible -- in part -- by the updates to the building. The project includes offices and a controlled environment for the handling of licensed materials. The second project will also be licensed by the CNSC. It is an industrial development in Teeswater, Ontario. The building is designed as new construction on a greenfield site, supporting the Kinectrics North building in Tiverton, Ontario with future phased construction anticipated within design. NA Engineering Associates Inc. has acted as the prime design consultant for each project. Our firm has developed the design as a 3D model for each of the properties, clearly illustrating how each property will look and function when completed. Kinectrics has been celebrated for its planned facilities by Bruce Power, the surrounding Tri-County area, and local media. We are proud to support their efforts to expand the base of local resources.

NAE Project Managers Participate in PMP Designation Program NAE Annual Golf Tournament Set for June 11, 2018 Volume 11 Winter Issue NAE OFFICES, ONTARIO A number of team members from NA Engineering Associates Inc. have been participating in a company-wide initiative to obtain their Project Management Professional (PMP) accreditation. The initiative has been led by Director of Project Management Brent Powers, who also recently completed his PMP designation as part of the initiative. The PMP Designation Program grows the knowledge and the capabilities of our project management team, and has helped us improve and refine our own internal methodologies, said Powers. It s been personally rewarding as well. Watching people you work with go through the process and succeed... I m proud of what we ve done with the initiative. As a recognized designation, PMP spans across industries and working methodologies. It is a globally-recognized accreditation / membership. It is only earned following experience, coursework, and a rigorous examination process. The designation is given by the Project Management Institute -- a not-for-profit professional organization dedicated to project management as a profession. The designation itself is viewed as a proverbial gold-standard in project management. The firm currently has four people with PMP designation, and several more in the process of completing PMP training and the subsequent examination process. SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO Looking ahead to warmer days, the firm has scheduled its annual Charity Golf Tournament for June 11, 2018 at the Highland Country Club in London, Ontario. Registration for the tournament will open in March. Please RSVP early as our tournament books up quickly. Since the tournament s inception, it has raised more than $500,000 for various charities, not-for-profits, and other worthy causes in Southwestern Ontario. Please join us for another day of play in support of our communities!

In the Office and Around the Community... ONTARIO, CANADA NA Engineering Associates Inc. sponsored Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Annual Black Bears Hockey Tournament held in Petawawa last month. The funds from this year s event are being provided to three recipients: Brook Farr, a wonderful young woman who was diagnosed with Viral Encephalitis at 6 months old; Deep River & District Hospital, who will put donations towards a bladder scanner; and the Pembroke Regional Hospital, who will be using the donations for two new Arthroscopic sets (which help to diagnose and treat joint problems). NA Engineering Associates Inc. s 2017 Food Drive wrapped up just before Christmas of last year. This initiative involved contributions from all of the firm s offices -- which were matched dollar-for-dollar by the firm itself. We ultimately raised $2,950 worth of donations, all of which was given to local food banks in southwestern Ontario. In September, the firm supported the 2017, Freedom 55 Financial Championship at the Highland Country Club in London, Ontario. Overall, the event generated more than $50,000 for the Thames Valley Children s Centre. Beyond this work for the community, the firm has found several other reasons to celebrate over the past few months. In December, the firm celebrated both its annual Christmas Party and its annual Staff Party. The events were shared with clients, staff, family, and friends. Several of our staff were also recognized for their anniversaries with the company and their continued contributions to the firm and its work. Congratulations again to James, Hasan, Judy, and Mary!
