SAVING SOUTH CLIFF GARDENS Monthly Update Hello and welcome to the South Cliff Gardens Monthly Update! Here we will share all the most recent news from the South Cliff garden community including: the HLF Parks for People Progress and updates from the Friends of South Cliff Gardens. 1

July update from the Friends of South Cliff Gardens The 9th of July was a wonderful day for Shuttleworth Gardens on the 100th anniversary of the gift of the gardens to the town in 1917 by their creator Alfred Shuttleworth, and the 80th anniversary of the creation of the Miniature, or Fairy, Garden by the Scarborough Corporation in 1937/8. We celebrated that by a garden party when people enjoyed scones, cakes and delicious sweet things (Fairy cakes included!) We were regally entertained by Merry Melancholy consisting of Simon Nisbett, lutenist and Jenny Hill, singer. The weather was ideal and Shuttleworth Gardens looked at their best. Lots of people came to the event and we made 50 for our funds. The Yorkshire in Bloom judges visited the gardens on the 19th of July and the weather was perfect for the event. Pictured are YIB judges Deirdre Walton left and Derek Hargreaves right talking with Nick Allen centre, the proprietor of the Red Lea Hotel, one of our loyal sponsors. The results of the judging will be announced in September. The volunteer hours for the month were: 87.5 hours. August update from the Friends of South Cliff Gardens We were having problems with the summer bedding in the Italian Gardens so we posted the following on our Facebook page: Visitors to the Italian Gardens may be surprised to see some empty flower beds. The plants in these beds were eaten by either Deer or Rabbits. It was decided that they wouldn't recover so were removed. It's too late to replant for this year but the beds will be replanted later in the year with next year's Spring bedding plants. We will have to select next year's Summer bedding very carefully to avoid those plants being eaten by the wildlife! It was good to receive the following comments: We were there yesterday and they were stunning even with empty flower beds: We walked through this morning and it was still beautiful! On the 23rd of August the volunteers got caught in the tropical downpour and need a special pat on the back for their resilience in adverse conditions! The volunteer hours for the month to date are: 79.5 hours. 2

HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND PARKS FOR PEOPLE PROJECT Update on the HLF Consultancy Services We went out to tender for the consultancy services for the development stage 2 of the project and received 10 return applications. These services include: creating the detailed garden designs, carrying out the community consultation and project management. We are now live on twitter, check out our page here: @HLFSGardens If you have any photos/ tweets please feel free to share them with us #HLFSouthCliff The quality of the applications was exceptional and the tender analysis team had a very difficult time choosing a winner. However we are very pleased to be able to announce a winning bid has now been chosen. Planning has now been approved for the Spa Stabilisation Project. HLF Outreach Session If you want to find out how your group could get funding to run a heritage project, come and learn more about the Heritage Lottery Fund and then have the opportunity to talk about your heritage project ideas with one of the HLF team. Community First Yorkshire will be there to talk about their community and volunteer support service and their funding advisor will be available to talk about your project ideas. Date: Friday 29 September 2017 Time: 11am 1.30pm Venue: Newby and Scalby Community Hall, Scalby Road, Scalby, Scarborough, YO13 0RA To book, please use the Eventbrite booking system https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ heritage-lottery-fund-heritage-is-broader-than-you-think-tickets-37000060176?aff=es2 Looking forwards to seeing you there! 3

NATURAL HERITAGE Sightings in the South Cliff Gardens Over the summer budding volunteer Jean Grundy has been busily identifying the ecology on the site. Here are just some of the highlights Great photos Jean! If you d like to know more get in touch via the contact details on the last page of the update. If you have any sightings please send them to us via FB, Twitter or our website, we would love to see them! 4

ACCESS AND INCLUSION Creating a fully inclusive and accessible heritage garden Dementia Working with Scarborough s DEEP( the Dementia Engagement and Empowerment Project), DAA (Dementia Action Alliance), Alzheimer's Society and Making Spaces; we are trying to find out how accessible South Cliff Gardens are in their current state for people living well with dementia. Together we are hoping to create an outdoor environment which is as dementia friendly as we possibly can. We ve had some great ideas put foreword already that have come up through group discussions Which include: carrying out an initial access audit, host dementia friendly events, memory walks (linking heritage with reminiscing), audio stories for the historic shelters and a sensory garden. Disability We are currently working with Scarborough s disability groups to try and make sure we do everything we can to make your garden and its heritage accessible to everyone. We are currently developing an access strategy based on the Heritage Lottery Fund s and Historic England guidance. We d like to thank Scarborough s DAG (Disability Action Group), FAST (Autism) and Creative Day Care for their help so far in the project. Youth Steering Group We are currently setting up a youth steering group to find out what the young people of Scarborough feel about the garden at the moment and to look at new ways to make the garden and its heritage more exciting and accessible to young people. This group will help design the new play facilities within the South Cliff gardens and consult on the overall masterplan ensuring that we create a space that is welcoming to all. Groups who are already interested in taking part are as follows: Young Carers, Creative Day Care, DAG (disability), FAST (autism), NYYouth Youth clubs, the Haven project and The Summit. If you or someone you know would like to be involved please do not hesitate to get in touch. 5

TRAINING AND VOLUNTEERING Join us Data Gathering Painting a picture of what the garden looks like now is really important so that we can demonstrate that all the hard work being carried out by our community has made an impact. We are gathering data through our online visitor survey, visitor interviews and counts, collecting peoples stories, wildlife sightings & surveys and old photographs, looking at archives and artworks. The Shelter Group Here in Scarborough we have an amazing group of volunteers that invest their free time into maintaining the beautiful heritage shelters we have across the borough. They are now looking for volunteers to help with cleaning, maintaining and painting our shelters. If you d like to get involved please get in touch via the details on the last page of the update. You can find the link to our online survey here: https:// www.surveymonkey.co.uk/ r/8wll6hy Huge thank you for the Haven Project for agreeing to carry out our visitor surveying The Friends of South Cliff Gardens The Friends of South Cliff Gardens would love to welcome anyone who is interested in volunteering with them in the park. They meet every Wednesday at 10:00hrs at the gardener s yard behind the rose garden. Homelessness We have had a lot of reports regarding rough sleepers living in the shelters within the park. Regular little picks also take place on the third Saturday of each month meeting at 10:00hrs at the Spa Cliff lift on the Esplanade. If anyone sees a rough sleeper please let us know and get in touch with the rainbow centre 01723500663 so that they can send someone out to help. 6
