With pumping capacities of L/min and L/min respectively, and ultimate pressure of Torr (.7 mbar), these pumps generate the flow and vacuum level needed to handle high boiling point solvents (<60 o C) such as DMF, toluene, and xylene. Models 0 and 0 handle aggressive acidic, basic and solvent vapors by utilizing corrosion-resistant PTFE (fluorinated plastics) on all wetted surfaces. No cold traps are needed to operate. These standalone diaphragm vacuum pumps need very little maintenance leading to low cost of ownership and improved productivity. The method of simply pumping room air through the vacuum pump at the end of a distilling or concentrating run does purge the pump head of any condensed vapors resulting in a cleaned pump. Both models incorporate a gas ballast valve. The valve, located on the front of the pump, is important for inhibiting vapor condensation in the pump when pumping low boiling point solvents. The valve also directs air through exhaust valves to quickly return the pump to maximum vacuum performance when switching from low boiling point to high boiling point solvents (<60 o C). Oil-Free Concentration of Aqueous Solutions Water removal and drying concentration applications routinely employ a vacuum system made up of an oil-sealed rotary vane pump, acid neutralization trap and -55 o C refrigerated cold trap. Rotary vane pumps have been traditionally selected because of the deep vacuum they obtain to allow rapid drying and their low initial cost. DRYFAST ULTRA Torr PTFE vacuum pumps make possible an economical oil-free solution that is ideal for low volume evaporation of strong acids, bases and harsh organic solvents. With Torr (.7 mbar) vacuum and high pumping speed efficiency, one observes rapid transfer of high boiling point solvents like DMF, toluene and xylene. Model 07 comes with a digital absolute vacuum read-out in units of Torr, mbar or pascal. Model 06 has identical vacuum and flow, but comes with dial vacuum read-out where knowing absolute pressure in the apparatus is not critical for your application, and the budget is tight. The system s patent-pending two-stage, flexible deep vacuum diaphragm pump resists chemical vapors thanks to fluorinated plastics used on all wetted surfaces including the diaphragm itself. An adjustable bleed valve mounted directly on the system s control panel lets you regulate the vacuum level. The Self-Cleaning feature automatically runs room air through the pump for two minutes at shutdown to rid the pump of residue ensuring quicker pump-down to ultimate vacuum and longer membrane service life. Critical to quick pump-down on high boiling point compounds following the stripping of volatile solvents is the gas ballast valve. The gas ballast leaks air into the -stage of the internal pump. The gas pathway is designed to quickly purge out liquefied solvents that are resting on the internal valves. This results in speedier pump-down to ultimate pressure. A cold trap is employed to minimize the ingestion of DMF and other solvents into the pump and to aid in extending the service interval. Proper vacuum system set-ups consist of the lab appliance, tubing, vacuum pump, and normally cold or liquid trap. Organic solvents and/or acids left behind during the distillation process are removed over several hours or more depending on the sample size. A foreline cold trap (see page 8) is always recommended to minimize the ingestion of the solvents. An acid neutralization trap is also recommended between the cold trap and the pump when strong acids are present in the sample. When the drying is finished for the day, it is very important to either turn the pump off and remove/clean the trap or isolate the trap from pump using a valve. The reason for this is to prevent sublimination of condensed solids or vaporized liquids from the cold trap recondensing in the pump. The use of large capacity pumps (greater than 40 L/min) on vacuum manifolds does shorten the oil change interval. The reason is the larger pump will accelerate the sublimation process. It is common to see at the end of a drying run when a large capacity pump is used that no condensables are in the trap because the chemicals have been drawn into the pump. There is a common misperception that a large pumping capacity pump will shorten the drying time. Due to tubing restrictions in the manifold and stopcock, this is not the case. Drying time differences between a large and a small pump occur only when the manifold system is leaky! Leaky vacuum systems should be repaired. 8

Foreline Trap Selection Foreline Traps For protection against contaminants in vacuum systems Foreline traps are used to prevent harmful substances generated or resident in vacuum systems from damaging vacuum pumps. Particulates can become lodged in a pump mechanism causing physical damage. Vapors can condense to liquids within the vacuum pump as a natural result of gas compression. Liquid water, solvents and acids can cause serious damage to a vacuum pump mechanism. (Refer to CHEMSTAR, pages 6 and 7 for work with corrosive gases). Foreline traps are also used to prevent oil backstreaming, the migration of oil molecules from vacuum pumps back into vacuum systems causing contamination of those systems. All paid repairs come with a new pump warranty. All returns must come with a P.O. with approved credit or credit card number. An RA number is obtained by filling out a safety service form located on the Welch web site,. A Welch customer service representative will then call or fax you with the RA number and shipping instructions. The reason for the safety service form is that it contains information on what chemicals may have been ingested into the pump during its use. Worker safety rules require this information prior to a repairman examining the pump. For Repair Service Inquiry: WARRANTY This Welch product is warranted to be free from defects in material and workmanship. The liability of Welch Rietschle Thomas under this warranty is limited to servicing, adjusting, repairing, or replacing any unit or component part which in the judgment of Welch Rietschle Thomas has not been misused, abused, or altered in any way or damaged by ingestion of foreign material causing impaired performance or rendering it inoperative. Foreign material includes solids, liquids other than pump oil, corrosive gases, and water or solvent vapor. No other warranties are expressed or implied.
