Wooragee Primary School Virtual Tour

What we are doing to be as sustainable as we can be: Wooragee Primary School is a tiny school doing BIG things for sustainability and the environment with; a fabulous organic kitchengarden program, recycling, composting, worm farming, chickens, bee hives, orchard, battery drop, olive grove and bush tucker garden. Students take care of the school native bush reserve, frog bog and native nesting box program.

Thirteen students aged 5-11 are very actively involved in every aspect of the sustainable living programs at Wooragee Primary School. They are supported by a team of dedicated adults; passionate teaching staff, parents, grandparents, community members, Wooragee Landcare group, Indigo Shire staff, Beechworth Corrections Community Team and Beechworth Health professionals. All of our families have a vegie patch at home! WOW!!

Every year we add something new to our school. This is a virtual tour of our exciting colourful sustinable living garden.

Our bright and beautiful Sun Flower Sculpture made from recycled metal is a symbol of sustainability.

Our battery drop program is loved by the community as it stops toxins from getting into the water table and makes us some money when we take them to the recyclers!

The yummy Olive Grove and Bush Tucker Garden are delicious too! Helping save our food miles! Here are some more areas of our garden

Colourful Rainbow serpent meeting place

Eat your way to our lovely kitchen down our ramp walk

We have Mosaic herb pots and passionfruit plants. 11 rainwater tanks, some with a level gauge.

Exciting fish pond and canna patch for friendly bees and lizards (and snakes!)

Magical Fairy Garden- for passive play

We have two garden sheds to store our tools and magic manures.

On our ramp walk, you will discover weeping crab apples and tomatoes we use to make yummy sauce and scrumptious jam!

Enjoy our BBQ & Pizza Oven verandah.

We have so many produce beds and an eco brick station.

Amazing produce beds supply our kitchen with seasonal harvest.

Produce beds and hot composts

Eating verandah for our wonderful view and serenity!

Gazebo, cubby and 3 tier sand pit

More produce beds old water tank, guarded by our scary scarecrow.

Sizzling hot house & cool shade house.

Propagating trays in shade house.

Local farmers give us soil, cow, sheep, horse manure, saw dust and hay and the Shire of Indigo gives us mulch to help our vibrant gardens.

Our exciting new vertical garden made from old pellets.

Two wiggly worm farms help improve our soli and reduce our waste.

Our chicken coop has a lavender hedge to keep the bugs off our chickens.

Our cold compost bays and pot storage is a bit untidy but we don t care!

We made a make shift garden fence to protect potatoes from our curious chooks.

Our chicken coop was also divided off to protect our huge pumpkin vine they just appeared from nowhere!

We put netting over fruit trees, pumpkins and cucumbers in our orchard to keep the birds out. Our dripper system is GRAVITY fed! Growing pumpkins under the fruit trees is a good use of soil and water. We grew 229 pumpkins this year!

We have 14 buzzing bee hives that help pollinate our plants.

Our nest boxes provides homes for native animals and birds. We found a sugar glider in this box!

Our Frog bog was built by helpful students and our wonderful community. It replaced a messy area in the school never used by us or frogs.

The best hiding spot! Especially when delicious mulberries are ripe in December!
