RECIPES Malty Chocolate Chip Cookies 140g/5oz softened butter 50g/2oz golden caster sugar 100g/4oz soft light brown sugar 200g/7oz plain flour 2 medium eggs 175g/6oz malted milk drink powder (e.g. Horlicks ) Half tsp baking powder 50g/2oz plain chocolate chips Pinch of salt Heat oven to 180 C, 160 C fan, gas 4 and line three baking sheets with baking parchment. Beat butter and sugars in a bowl until light and fluffy, then beat in eggs one at a time. Add flour, malted milk drink powder, baking powder, chocolate chips, and salt. Stir with a wooden spoon until mixture forms a dough, knead gently. Divide into twenty pieces, walnut sized. Roll pieces into balls. Place on baking sheets, leaving room to spread. Flatten slightly with hand. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until starting to turn golden brown on edge. Leave to cool for 5 minutes on tray then move carefully to cooling rack. Display five cookies. 12 Frosty Yoghurt Orange Cake 175g/6oz Butter, melted and cooled, plus extra for greasing 225g/8oz Self-raising flour 175g/6oz Golden caster sugar Grated zest of 2 oranges 3 large eggs 150g Pot of plain yoghurt Heat oven to 180C, 160C fan, gas 4. Grease and line a 1kg loaf tin. Mix the flour, sugar, and orange zest in a large bowl. Beat the eggs with the melted butter and yoghurt, then pour into the dry ingredients and stir well. Tip the cake batter into the loaf tin, flatten the top and bake for 50 minutes to 1 hour. Cool in the tin. Remove any lining paper ready for icing after removing from tin. Icing 100g/4oz sifted icing sugar Juice from the 2 oranges Strips of orange peel to decorate Add strained orange juice gradually to sugar until icing is quite stiff, beating with a wooden spoon. The Society wishes to thank all advertisers and sponsors for their support throughout the year RULES GENERAL 1 All exhibits (excepting those in the floral decoration classes) must be grown by the exhibitor and under the management of the exhibitor in whose name they are shown. 2 The Committee may, upon the receipt of a written complaint, inspect the garden, allotment or greenhouse of any exhibitor. 3 The Committee shall have the right to refuse any entry and to decide any matter affecting any interpretation of these Rules. 4 The Committee shall not be held responsible for any loss or damage sustained by exhibitors. 5 Any protest or objection must be made in writing and handed to the Secretary not later than 3.00pm on the day of the Show, accompanied by a fee of 1.00, which will be refunded if the objection is sustained. 6 A novice is a person who has not won a first prize in a corresponding class in any previous BUDHS show. 7 A judge should refrain from entering the exhibition hall until staging has been completed and exhibitors have left. He/she should not know to whom the various exhibits belong and it should be evident that a judge has avoided learning who the owners are. 8 The Judges decision shall be final on all matters affecting the award of prizes. 9 Any photograph to be taken by exhibitor. 10 Prizes in any Class will only be awarded at the discretion of the Judges. 11 Prize money may be collected from the Treasurer between 3.30pm and 4.30pm on the day of the Show. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture. 12 The Shows will be conducted in accordance with the rules and standards contained in the current Royal Horticultural Society s Horticultural Show Handbook, except where, under this schedule, they obviously do not apply. For the purposes of these Shows only, RHS Rule 4 will not apply. More than one entry per household in any class will be accepted but not more than one entry per entrant. SECTION 8 PRESERVES AND COOKERY Articles in Classes 68 to 70 to be covered with any clear polythene bag which is easily removable and replaceable. Preserves must be in plain glass jars; no trade name on jar or lid. Jars with a thread must have a screw top and no waxed disc. Lids must be new and are available from the Society. Plain white labels, showing variety and date made, must be used. 66 A jar of Marmalade 67 A collection of Two Kinds of Preserves, e.g., Jam/Marmalade, or Jam/ Chutney, etc. 68 A Victoria Sandwich made by a gentleman (own recipe) 69 Malty Chocolate Chip Cookies (recipe provided, page 12) 70 Frosty Yoghurt Orange Cake (recipe provided, page 12) SECTION 9 PHOTOGRAPHY Classes 71 to 73.
