The President s Message Hi Bromeliad lovers. Have I been out in the heat too long or does it feel just a smidge cooler?? It must be the breeze. I have been out cleaning broms today and it was actually pleasant. Sorry I missed last month s meeting, heard it went off without a hitch I would like thank those involved with getting things coordinated for the potluck and those of you who filled in for others who were still away on vacation. You have no idea how much I appreciated it. This month s program is going to be great I am so excited to have Chip Jones come to speak. He has never spoken to our group before he is well versed in many areas of horticulture, such as design, installation and bromeliads. He is an expert on cycads, etc. It will be great! Chip will be bringing plants to sell so bring your mula.. Also, October will be our Annual Bromeliad Auction get at least three ( 3 ) of your plants prepared now to donate to the auction this is one of the ways that helps keep this club afloat is by having this yearly auction. So please get prepared and tell your friends and family!! Lastly, WHO IS GOING TO THE ORLANDIANA WORLD CONFERENCE?????? If you have never been to one, this is the time to go!!!! It is right in our back yard, only a 3 ½ hour drive. Great speakers, rare plant auction, plant vendors, a banquet and more. The weather should be great I hope to see you there!! See you Monday, Colleen Garden Fest 2013. March 23rd & 24th Update 14th Biennial Bromeliad Show I will be passing around a volunteer signup sheet at the meeting we will need people to help with the judged show (inside the building). Thursday the 21st will be the setup and plant entries and Friday will be the judging. We will need people Thursday afternoon from 2:00 pm 6:00 pm for entries. Friday we need 13 clerks from 11:30 am to probably 4:00 pm and we need at least 4 runners to help the judges when they are judging the plants to get on the head table toward the end of the day around 2:00 pm. Friday we also need volunteers to help vendors outside unload trucks like we did last year. That was a big help to everyone involved. Thanks for all your help we can t do this with YOU!!!!!!!

Membership News Welcome our new member! David Ventura of Margate Reminder to all: Please sign in when you attend a meeting so we can better track attendance. Reminder: we will only be giving out name tag tickets as you come in the door. Editor s Note How fitting that this month s note focuses on the landscaping at Ft. Lauderdale s historic treasure, Stranahan House, 335 SE 6th Ave. As mentioned in our last newsletter, a docent staffer at Stranahan House requested a little assistance in identifying the four types of bromeliads that are found on the east side of this site in the informal garden and in the branches of a 110 year old live oak. (The garden and grounds actually have over 150 plants in all, most of which have been identified and which have signage. The house and the gardens are a lovely place to visit in the heart of downtown right on the New River amidst high-rise condos. In preparation for hurricane season, the handyman removes all 150 signs and then reinstalls them in November. The ultimate plan is to develop a guidebook for the staff to expedite the process of placing the signs, print literature for visitors and expand content for tours.) Here are the pictures of those plants. 1 2 3 4

Harriet s Hoots Happy September - - hope you all had a relaxing Labor Day. For those of you who did not have to work Yippee but for those of you who did, you deserve to take another day off and treat yourself to something special. Our August Pot-Luck Social went very well if I do say so myself. I trust everyone who attended enjoyed themselves and had fun with the games that Larry (in his orange clown jacket) and I concocted, especially the last one Concentration (lol). You never know what we will come up with. We hope you enjoy the plants that you won. There was plenty of food, desserts and drinks to satisfy our hungry bunch. I would like to thank everyone who contributed. As always our colorful tables just overflowed with delicious tidings. I really think that we should change our name to The Broward Culinary Group (let s bring that up at our next meeting). Thanks to Jack Meharian for the great centerpieces that adorned our tables. Thanks to Bruce Zaret for introducing us to some unusual and wonderful plants at the show and tell table. Thanks to Jimmy Johns for contributing the platters of great sandwiches. Thanks to Wanda Lee for bringing her delightful and unusual art pieces. Thanks to Shirley Konefal and Bruce Zaret and Wanda Lee for contributing such wonderful items to our silent auction. Thanks to Carol Mordas for helping Larry and me with the concentration game and also for passing out the playing cards (wasn t that a fun idea to use cards throughout the evening). I will see you all at our next meeting. Birthday members, listen for your phones to ring as I call you with a little friendly reminder to bring something for the refreshment table. Until then, keep cool (cause it s still so hot) and happy planting and pupping.
