About Ark Eden Ark Eden, founded by Jenny Quinton, is a permaculture demonstration site and education, & outreach center, based on Lantau H.K, offering environmental solutions-based workshops and design courses as part of a global movement towards sustainable living. Its mission is to cultivate permaculture principles in Hong Kong through educational programs and demonstration of sustainable, resilient, locally based systems of living, in order to safeguard and reinforce our rich natural resources and ensure a peaceful & plentiful future for all. About Green Warrior Permaculture Founded by permaculture specialist Steve Cran, Green Warrior Permaculture is a collective of sustainability specialists dedicated to solving the problems of our world through action. The organisation has developed effective strategies for sustainability in aid work, community development, disaster mitigation and permanent food security. They train trainers for field work, design projects for NGOs as well as monitor and assess current programs. Green Warrior permaculture can implement projects in disaster zones, conflict zones, remote communities and poverty prone areas as well as urban and high end developments. They are sustainability specialists with the skills to implement real solutions for the current challenges facing humanity and the planet.
About the Program Ark Eden Green Warrior Permaculture Field Trainer Internship Program The Field Trainer Course at Ark Eden prepares students to be permaculture trainers to work effectively in urban, rural, affluent and impoverished communities. Field trainers learn all aspects of project design and implementation. Some of the outcomes you will gain on the course: Support the design, set-up and implementation of the permaculture project demonstration site and successfully set up teams for different site development projects Select and grow a number of productive organic crops to sell as well as feed farm staff Design a crop rotation system including animal production for farm site Management & participation in weekly education outreach programs Identify profitable LEISA (Low External Input Sustainable Agriculture) based agriculture systems to replace current low profit farming practices Work with fellow trainees in HK to construct & maintain a Super-Permaculture demonstrate site & farm on existing land to grow a variety of crops organically as well as provide a host of other activities, such as tree planting, educational outreach and food production. Support monitoring and evaluation of the project to develop standard procedures Explore and undertake opportunities to develop productive gardens at selected sites around Lantau and provide training to farmers and staff as required Design a polyculture permaculture farm integrating vegetable, fish and fruit production Create a food wall to demonstrate vertical urban gardening Create permaculture systems for urban living situations, with other staff, universities and activist groups 3
Program Leaders Steve Cran Steve Cran is a sustainable community development specialist or Permaculture Aid Worker with 20 years of field project experience including war zones, post disaster zones, poverty zones and in many difficult areas on this troubled planet most people would shy away from. Steve focuses on local people training local people by building working models to inspire the rest of the community and bringing solid results. Steve worked for 5 years with rural Aboriginal communities in outback Australia. In 1999 he went to East Timor and formed a growing Permaculture training network and built the Greenhand Field School in Ache, in of the worst affected areas hit by the 2004 tsunami. In January 2010 Steve was was invited to northern Uganda to work with the Karamajong people to restore food security and assist in ending violence and conflict in an area plagued by conflict and poverty for 40 years. Steve Cran is now conducting training throughout Southeast Asia on Permaculture-Aid Field Skills and how to turn urban deserts into areas of intensive food production transferring his hard won skills to young people wanting to make a difference in this world. Jenny Quinton Jenny Quinton was born in the UK and has lived in the hills of South Lantau Island, H.K, for over 23 years. A dedicated environmental activist & leader, she was drawn to the warrior path when her house was nearly destroyed due to hill fires caused by grave-sweeping festival visitors over 20 years ago. After witnessing first-hand the reckless and negligent damage caused to our eco systems, Jenny became a passionate and tireless fighter for local solutions to global problems. Joining several community groups supporting environmental issues, she served as an executive member of the Green Lantau Association and a member of the Living Islands Movement, the Environmental Campaign Committee and the Lantau Buffalo Association. Jenny is also a qualified teacher and worked with the English Schools Foundation for nine years and currently chairs the Environmental Group of ESF. Jenny has two children, who are adept at fighting hillfires, speed racing down mountains and exploring the depths of the ocean. She still lives on Lantau with her troupe of six dogs, one cat, and one pig.
About the Program Ark Eden Green Warrior Permaculture Field Trainer Internship Program Program Dates 10 weeks Mon June 25 th Sunday 2 Sept 2012 Generally Monday Friday, 8am 5pm, but some Sats and Suns may be required as alternative working days. These dates are flexible. They will not have a stop date as an intern can show up at a later time and we will use the chain-training system indigenous people use. Each intern has an older brother/ sister and a younger one they are looking after. Program Fees USD $3,500.00 USD per intern, includes: Food Costs for 10 weeks: including one midday meal prepared by Ark Eden Staff Monday through Friday. The rest to be prepared by students, Lodging, Including communal bathrooms and kitchen Wi Fi Students need to pay for and organize their own return transportation In regards to fees, Ark Eden is currently seeking corporate sponsorship for students.
