VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PANSY Pansies and related Johnny-jumpups are charming, small, coolweather flowers. They come in many colors, with a variety of markings and flower sizes. The most common types of pansies have a dark center called a face. Grow in rich, well-drained organic soil. Add compost to soil to increase organic content. When purchasing plants, choose stocky plants with dark green foliage and few blooms but many buds. Many types self seed, some may overwinter, and others are relatively heat tolerant; most decrease flowering when the weather warms. The flowers are edible, as long as they have not been sprayed with pesticides. Provided by UW- Extension Master Gardeners wimastergardener.org APRIL: SPRING FLOWERS FOR YOUR GARDEN GERANIUMS This old fashioned springblooming perennial flower has pink or white heartshaped blooms that hang along arching stems. The plant grows 2-3 feet tall and wide. The soft green foliage remains attractive until the plant goes dormant in late summer. Geraniums have long been popular decorative plants for indoor and outdoor use. These are actually members of the genus Pelagorium and are usually grown as annuals since they do not overwinter outdoors in Wisconsin. There are many forms, types and species available, with great variation in leaf and growth characteristics, and red, pink, orange or white flowers. such as a shaded border or woodland garden. Because the foliage goes dormant, it is best to plant bleeding heart among later developing perennials such as hostas and ferns which will fill in as the bleeding heart foliage begins to die back. Drought will send the plant into early dormancy. Fringed bleeding heart (Dicentra exmis) is smaller When purchasing geranium plants, look for sturdy plants with good leaf color and a bushy habit instead of a single, top-heavy stem. Plant outdoors after all danger of frost is past. Geraniums do best with 6-8 hours of sunlight per day and can be grown in the ground or in containers. Keep the soil evenly moist but not wet. BLEEDING HEART Bleeding heart is easy to grow in moist, well drained humus soil in part shadeand finer textured, with upright flowers, but will maintain foliage all summer.

THE DIRT ON THE LANDSCAPE LOWDOWN VEGGIES TO PLANT EARLY Not all vegetables should be planted right away in the spring. Only those that are tolerant of cool germination temperatures and are able to withstand light to moderate frosts should be planted as soon as the ground is ready to work in the Spring. Common Cool Season Vegetables include: Beets Broccoli Chard Cabbage Lettuce Peas Radish Spinach Onions (from seed or transplants) They can be planted a few weeks before the date of the average last frost in your area. Vegetables grow best if they get lots of sun and water, so no matter what you choose to grow, make sure you re planting in the sunniest part of your yard and within easy reach of the Lettuce is one of the oldest known vegetables, with hundreds of varieties to choose from in a wide range of sizes, colors, textures and tastes. Lettuce is one of the easiest, fastest and earliest crops for the home gardener. It doesn t require a lot of space and does best in cool weather spring and fall in Wisconsin. Plant seeds in the garden Spring radishes have crisp, pungent roots that are small, globe-shaped and white, pink or red. They are easy to grow and mature quickly-a good crop for kids to try! Sow seeds in the garden in early spring, making successive plantings to extend the harvest. Thin to 1 apart. Pull up the whole plant when the radishes are the right size for eating. When purchasing radishes with the leaves attached, look for bunches with crisp, green leaves as these can This hardy perennial vegetable is easy to grow in W is c o n s i n g a r d e n s. Choose a site without any perennial weeds such as quackgrass, Canada thistle, or creeping Jenny because perennial weeds intermixed with asparagus can be very difficult to control. Plant purchased crowns about 1 foot apart in early spring. Mulch and use shallow cultivation to prevent weed growth. LETTUCE as early as 4 to 6 weeks before the average date of last frost in well-worked soil with good drainage and moisture retention. For a fall crop plant seeds in late August and September. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep and space rows 12 inches apart. Thin to 4-6 apart when the seedlings are large enough to handle. As lettuce be added to salads. Roots 1 inch or less in diameter will have a mild flavor and not be woody. Radishes are a good source of vitamic C and potassium. After fall frost, remove the fronds to reduce the possibility of disease (rust) and insect (asparagus beetle). Wait until the third year to begin harvesting when spears are 6-8 tall, breaking or cutting near the soil. Asparagus is best eaten on the day it is picked, but it can be stored in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. grows you can selectively harvest outer leaves, leaving the inner leaves to develop, or harvest the entire plant at maturity by cutting it off at ground level. Exceeding Your Expectations PRESTIGE LANDSCAPING & GARDEN CENTER This common yellow flower seems to spring up overnight. Dandelion is a short-lived perennial that is excellent at spreading its numerous seeds. It can also reproduce from pieces of taproot. Dandelions are generally only a problem in thin, slow growing lawns that cannot outcompete the weeds. Control: Prevent dandelions (and other weeds) from getting COMMON GARDENING ISSUES DANDELIONS started by creating a thick, healthy lawn with correct mowing, fertilizing and watering. If you only have a few dandelions, use a digging stick or other garden tool to remove the dandelion and most of the root. Spot treat with an herbicide individual plants in lawns instead of making broadcast treatments. Herbicide applications made in late summer and early fall are most effective. CRABGRASS VS QUACKGRASS These two weedy grasses with coarse leaves are often confused. Quackgrass is a perennial grass that has extensive underground whitish rhizomes (underground stems) from which new plants can arise. New, upgright leaves appear early in the spring. This plant is difficult to control by weeding; chemical herbicides are most effective. Crabgrass is a low growing, warm season annual grass that germinates about the time common lilac is in the early bloom stage, sets seed in late summer, and dies with the first frost. It often forms patches in lawns, with plants growing together to form large clumps. The best defense is a thick, vigorously growing lawn, but it is easy to control in both lawns and ornamental beds with preemergent herbicides (applied before it germinates) or can be removed by hand. She forgot to thaw out dinner, So we went out to dine. She planted roses Tuesday, She says they are a must. They really are quite lovely, But she quite forgot to dust. On Wednesday it was daisies, They opened up with sun. All white and pinks and yellows, But the laundry wasn t done. The poppies came on Thursday, A bright and cherry red. I guess she really was engrossed, She never made the bed. IT was violets on Friday, In colors she adores. It never bothered her at all, All crumbs upon the floors, I hired a maid on Saturday, My week is now complete. My wife can garden all she wants, The house will still be neat! It s nearly lunchtime Sunday And I cannot find the maid. Oh no! I don t believe it! She s out there WITH THE SPADE!

TESTIMONIALS FROM CUSTOMERS We own a Wisconsin vacation home near Castle Rock Lake, and had some landscaping projects that needed to be completed within a tight timeframe. We were thrilled to find Prestige Landscaping! Jason and his team performed a superior job for us. The customer support we received was excellent from start to finish, with good communication (which is VERY important to us). The team worked hard to keep everything on schedule, and the price of the job was reasonable. Prestige did everything as we requested, and they did so with great attention to detail. We were extremely impressed with the quality of the finished projects. We highly recommend Prestige Landscaping, and we will be using them again in the future! Patricia and Steven Castle Rock My wife and I purchased our home on Lake Redstone four years ago. Once we completed some remodeling inside, we had many ideas and changes we wanted to implement to the landscaping. Jason and his team listened to our thoughts and expanded upon them to provide a great water front natural stone patio that blended large stone work into a natural looking setting. This theme was continued in two additional projects as we updated all landscaping around the house. Prestige s timely and cost effective work allowed us to stay on budget and complete our projects with little or no interruption to our time spent in our vacation home. Joseph P. Z Senior Director of Sales Lake Redstone Jason I absolutely love (and I mean LOVE) my patio and front yard! I have already had a couple of neighbors stop by and comment on how beautiful my patio is! A special thanks to Jason s crew. He should know that his crew is extremely polite and respectful. I was very impressed with their demeanor.
