From the President Dear Members and Friends, Next meeting: Nov 18, 7 pm Pinecrest Gardens, Hibiscus Room11000 Red Road, Pinecrest, FL 33156 It was a busy, beautiful South Florida weekend. We had the Ramble at Fairchild Gardens to enjoy and I have just returned from what can only be called a tour of Old Florida. Our field trip to Patsy West s property in Ft. Lauderdale was on the morning of the 8th. If you recall, Patsy spoke to our group in June of this year. She is a fifth generation Native Floridian and noted ethno historian and author in the field of Seminole and Miccosukee Indians. We found her property tucked away on the river in Ft. Lauderdale, in a charming, forgotten neighborhood dating back to the early 1900 s. There were several homes on the property which her father and grandfather built in 1924. Large oaks, palms, coffee (both wild and cultivated species from which she harvested 4 ½ pounds of beans last year) fill the property. There were, I believe she said, 1700 orchids that came from the Ken Kone collection throughout the trees and rocks and planters all over the property, many of which were in bloom. Patsy prepared us a beautiful lunch, which we ate outdoors, by the river. If we thought we had had a beautiful and interesting morning, it was nothing as to what followed. We entered her parents home, in which she now lives, to chat and enjoy the air. What a surprise this lady is. Each room was filled with art, historic, tribal, whimsical You name it. I don t think you will ever see a home like this. Each room felt like a movie set. She then entertained us with colorful stories of her family and Old Florida, her many travels and upcoming trip to the Orchid Conference in Ecuador. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day. Make sure you join us for our next field trip! See you at the meeting, if you will not be able to attend please have a Happy Thanksgiving filled with family and friends. Love, Gail President 2

This Month at Stanhopeas and Related Genera Miami-native Guillermo Salazar grew up in the flower growing and arranging business. Geographical location was not as important as the backdrop provided by his parents, a nursery owner and a floral-designer. Guillermo s natural design ability and appreciation for plants and flowers found the perfect growth media in his academic interests Landscape Design and Management (BS) and Environmental Horticulture (MS). It was during his college years that Guillermo learned about the importance of protecting natural resources, and as a Master Gardener, he has worked in private, municipal and governmental capacities in South Florida. Currently he also works as adjunct faculty for the Landscape Technology Department of Miami Dade College, and Landscape Superintendent for the City of Miami Lakes. He is also an AOS Student Judge, ISA Certified Arborista, Certified Landscape Inspector and Certified Horticulturist, and specializes in Angraecoids, Bulbophyllums, and rare and miniature tropical species. November From the Editor The lovely pictures you see scattered throughout this issue were taken by Joan Manley. Hers are also the comments that serve as captions. I hope that all who were not able to participate enjoy the trip to Patsy West s garden home through Gail s words and Joan s pictures. And, for those who made it, we hope you enjoy reliving those memories. Thank you Gail and Joan. Gio Editor 4
