INTRODUCTION FirePro System Limited has expressed a need for developing the engineering guidance to apply the Aerosol Extinguishing Systems in Bus Engine Compartments, which ensure adequate and cost effective fire protection. FirePro Systems Limited has completed a series of experimental tests addressing the use of FirePro Aereosol Generator in bus engine compartment. The work demonstrated the potential benefit of using FirePro Fire Extinguishing Aerosol Systems for the protection of bus engine compartments and provided engineering guidance for developing the design criteria. The FirePro Fire Extinguishing Aerosol technology has been successfully applied in total flooding application as for local application in order to protect marine vessels, coaches, cars and trains. The success of this technology in effective suppression of the fire is consolidated and proven by several test reports and certifications/listings issued by a number of Internationally Recognised Listing Authorities. This current Hughes Associates Europe, srl report represents a peer review of the full report issued by the FirePro Experimental Test Laboratory and shall be read in conjunction with it. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY A series of fire tests in typical Bus Engine Compartments were conducted in order to address the use of FirePro Generators as an alternative suppression system. For each test, the performance of an automatic FirePro generators system (FP500 and FP200 with nozzles) in extinguishing a diesel fire involving also engine components was evaluated. The test parameters included measurement of air temperature, time of fire detection, and time of fire suppression. The testing completed for the FirePro Aerosol Generator Engine Compartment Fire Tests were intended to verify the efficiency of the FirePro suppression system. Several tests with different vents and generator arrangements were conducted. The preliminary test from Test n. up to Test n. 22 has been conducted by the FirePro Experimental Test Laboratory to develop a fire test scenario reproducing the real fire scenario that may occur inside a Bus Engine Compartment. Validation Tests from Test n. 23 up to Test n. 35 where performed and witnessed by Mr. P. Moncheroni, Head of Fire protection and Life Saving appliances Section - RINA (Italian Marine Administration) and Mr. L. Borghetti of Hughes Associates Europe, srl. The Witness Tests were successfully conducted and a number of additional tests were conducted (from Test n. 36 up to Test n. 39) upon a request of RINA to validate an extended pre-burning time (from 60 second up to 90 seconds) to simulate a longer extinguishing system intervention time, in case of a delayed system activation triggered by the bus driver. Table (pages 6 to 9) of the current report summarise the test layout, the significant test parameters and the test results. More details are reported on the tables included on the report issued by FirePro Experimental Test Laboratory attached herewith. FirePro Bus Engine Compartment Fire Protection page 4 of

CONCLUSIONS AND RECCOMENDATIONS The FirePro Experimental Test Campaign conducted with the Firepro Fire Extinguishing Aerosol Systems applied in Bus Engine Compartments demonstrated the ability of the FirePro Aerosol Technology to extinguish the fires that may occur inside the engine compartment of buses and vehicles and in similar engine compartments like boat engine bays, earthmoving equipment and mining equipment. Moreover the tests demonstrated the capability to perform the fire extinction in adverse weather/wind conditions, even in substantial open engine compartments with appreciable air flow, and the capability to extinguish pool fires formed by fuel leaking on the ground under open bottom engine compartments. A properly engineered FirePro Fire Extinguishing Aerosol System appears to be an appropriate cost effective, and efficient solution for the engine compartments similar to the configuration tested. Work Considerations After visiting different bus companies and inspecting and measuring the engine compartments of different buses manufacturers and models, e.g. Volvo, Renault, Hino, Mercedes etc., we observed that the parts, the position of the parts, the engine compartment volume and the open space volume vary not only depending on the manufacturer, but also depending on the models. Taking into consideration safety factors and different external and internal conditions, we decided to use the largest engine compartment volume that we measured. This was the engine compartment of a Hino Bus, which was 5.22 m 3. Other factors that we took into consideration were the opening space. During our inspections of the different buses, we noticed that some buses were completely open at the bottom, other partly open, and the openings had different sizes and shapes. In addition, the ventilation of the engines varied, with some having ventilation only in the front, others on one side, others on both sides and others on both sides and in the front. Further factors we considered were the following:. The fire might occur because of fuel leakage from the injection fuel supply system. Leakage could happen due to damaged components, wear of components or malfunctioning of the injection fuel supply system. The contact of fuel with the hot engine components could start up the fire. The quantity of diesel and the time needed to start up a fire is very difficult to ascertain. 2. The high pressure of the diesel in the injection fuel supply system. 3. The high pressure of the jet spray, which injects the diesel from the injectors. 4. The ignition point of the diesel. The diesel does not ignite at the same rate as petrol. It must reach a certain temperature before it ignites. 5. After ignition, diesel maintains the fire longer, and it is harder to extinguish, due to its oil content. 6. The engine and air-condition compressor ventilation system. The ventilation system of large vehicles such as buses and lorries work with fans, which are operated by the power of the engine. Once the engine is turned off the ventilation system switches off immediately. 7. The air condition compressor and unit that carry gas under pressure. 8. Fire due to electrical fault. 9. The amount of rubber pipes etc. is part of the engine component. The quantity rate at which the diesel will escape depends directly on the dimensions and specifications of the fuel pumps and the location of the leakage. In the injection fuel supply systems there are safety systems, which in the event of a leak, the pressure of the fuel within the system will be affected, and so the ECU cuts off the diesel supply. Collecting information from modern diesel injection systems from major manufactures like Bosch, we gathered the following information: 3

In-line pumps Power Output: 45-55 KW/Cylinder Injections Pressure: 750-950 bar Injection Fuel Quantity: 20-250 mm 3 per stroke Axial-Piston Distributor Pumps Power Output: 30 KW/Cylinder Injections Pressure: 800-400 bar Injection Fuel Quantity: 70-25 mm 3 per stroke Single-Cylinder Injection Pumps Power Output: up to 000 KW/Cylinder Injections Pressure: 500 bar Injection Fuel Quantity: 8-8000 mm 3 per stroke Unit Pump System Power Output: 80 KW/Cylinder Injections Pressure: 600-800 bar Injection Fuel Quantity: 50-400 mm 3 per stroke Radial-Piston Pumps Power Output: 25-45 KW/Cylinder Injections Pressure: 500-850 bar Injection Fuel Quantity: 85-75 mm 3 per stroke Common Rail Systems Power Output: 30-200 KW/Cylinder Injections Pressure: 600 bar Injection Fuel Quantity: 400 mm 3 per stroke Buses engine Four stroke engines 6 Cylinders 4000-4500 rpm. The last three types are the most commonly used by the modern buses with the common rail system to be favoured by car and bus manufacturers, because of the construction simplicity and the economical effects and efficiency during the operation of the system. With all the information that we have collected/assessed, and the time the bus driver needs to ascertain that the engine compartment catches fire and stops the bus and turns off the engine, we concluded that we should use litre of diesel fuel. The fuel should be injected within minute by the jet spray via two injection holes, which would simulate the extreme difficult conditions. 4

METHODOLOGY In order to perform the tests, we used an engine compartment simulator that was built according to our considerations. To achieve the correct quantity and time for the injected diesel, we built a diesel fuel supply system by using a marine fuel pump, 3/8 and ¼, copper pipes pressure regulator valve and for safety reasons a fire check valve. After several tests, we adjusted the pressure and quantity of the supplied diesel to the required amount. During the tests, we used petrol 95 octane for the initial ignition of the fire and for the automatic igniter we used a pyrotechnic activator, powered by a 2V battery. In addition, during the tests we used different opening space to cover the entire range of bus models. We have issued the Test Reports covering all data. In each Report the following data are mentioned: - Location of the test - Date and time - Vehicle, engine capacity and engine scenario, percentage of open space - Vehicle classification and vehicle class - Fuel type and quantity - FirePro generators used: quantity, model, and serial no. and mass, weight before and after the test - Positioning of the system in the engine compartment - Results and comments DATE LAST CHECKED: 7 MARCH 200 5

CONCLUSIONS Bus engines extinguishing concentration assessment The results indicated that for this type of engine enclosure, with side ventilation openings and open on the bottom part, the selection of FirePro models should be: 2 x FP-500 (with outlet nozzle), for a total extinguishing concentration of,000 grams. Due to the possibility of experiencing re-ignition of the fire, after the initial extinguishing inside the engine enclosure, (caused mainly by the fuel burning on the ground under the engine enclosure), the optimum results were obtained when the 2 units of FP-500 generators were installed at a middle height on the 2 opposite corners. The 2 generators were positioned with a 45 degree angle so that the aerosol extinguishing medium was directed partly inside the engine enclosure and partly on the ground under the engine enclosure, thanks to the nozzle spreading effect. This positioning ensures that the fuel, which drips from the engine onto the ground and is ignited, is also extinguished by the aerosol, therefore the possibility of re-ignition is prevented. The temperature detected during the fire tests reached over 600 o C, as indicated in the temperature versus time graphs, registered for each test. All the final tests, from test no. 23 to test no. 35, were performed in the presence of two representatives of accredited Institutes: Eng. P.Moncheroni of RINA (Italian Marine Registry- Fire Protection and Life Saving Appliances Section)) and Mr. L.Borghetti of Hughes Associates Europe, srl (Fire Science & Engineering). A Peer Review Report has been issued by Hughes Associates Europe, srl which enforces the results and together, form a sound and credible document, which can be used in the marketing and promotional activity with clients. A number of verification tests, test no. 36 to test no. 39, were performed applying an extended pre-burning time (from 60 sec. to 90 sec.), thus simulating a longer intervention time by the driver, who has to manually trigger the activation of the extinguishing system, after receiving the signal from the detection system. 6
