LIGHTING EXPERT SAMANTHA SANNELLA ON THE ADVANTAGES OF LED LIGHTING Anything that uses a regular bulb can be changed to an LED LEDs last up to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO USE LEDS IN YOUR HOME? Start with ceiling fixtures and pendants anything that uses a regular bulb can be changed to an LED. In Toronto, many homes have halogen pot lights that give off a lot of heat and burn out often. These are also replaceable with slimline LED retrofit fixtures. DON T LEDS PRODUCE COLD LIGHT? Not at all! Colour temperature for LEDs has greatly improved. For residential lights, choose an LED with a temperature of between 2,500 K and 3,500 K. This will give the home a lovely warm glow. WHAT DO YOU SAY TO PEOPLE WHO ARE HESITANT ABOUT THE COST OF LEDS? I say, invest, invest, invest! The cost of LEDs has decreased and Toronto Hydro offers coupons to save even more. Your utility bills will be lower and you won t have to climb a ladder to replace a light which is a great benefit. WHERE ARE SOME UNEXPECTED AREAS TO USE LEDS? My favourite place is in a kitchen cabinet drawer, so that when you open it, the light automatically switches on. LEDs can also be installed for dramatic effect with crown moulding and baseboards, as well as in the shower. CAN LEDS ENHANCE OUTDOOR SPACES? LEDs make great additions to the garden for the twinkle effect and for security lighting. Because they rarely burn out, they are a good maintenance-free option.
